State of Emergency by Mary Hallberg 4.3 Stars (50 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

17-year-old Dallas Langdon is fighting zombies with a pizza cutter. Dallas has always loved zombie movies. But when she catches a real live (erm, dead) musician eating a man's intestines backstage after the show, she knows her movies have become a reality. And what do characters in zombie movies do? Seek shelter. Fortunately, Dallas's eccentric uncle owns a farmhouse in Chattanooga, an eight hour drive from New Orleans. It's on top of a steep mountain, surrounded by electric fences, and cut off from the worlds of the living -- and the dead. Dallas's parents, still safe at home, laugh at her idea over the phone. Her friends only agree to join her because it's fall break and they could use a mini vacation anyway. But then Dallas's best friend is killed by a zombie horde when they're attracted to her ringing cell phone. Civilians think their reanimated loved ones simply have the flu, leaving them alive (well, undead) and rapidly increasing the zombies ranks. And since minors can't buy guns, Dallas's only weapon is a giant industrial pizza cutter she swipes from a gas station. George A. Romero never mentioned anything like this. With one friend dead and no zombie survival guides to help her, Dallas and her friends must get to Chattanooga before joining the ranks of the undead themselves. Fans of the zombie action of Jonathan Mayberry's ROT & RUIN as well as the self aware humor of Zombieland and Scream will enjoy State of Emergency.

So Late So Soon by Harry Tynan 3.7 Stars (39 Reviews)    Price verified 59 minutes ago

Luke Thurber REALLY regrets messing with the ancient time artifact that his Dad found in storage at the museum. If only he'd stuck with his homework instead, he wouldn't have: 1. Accidentally cloned himself 2. Left his mp3 player in the early 1980s, where some enterprising plagiarist used it to rewrite pop music history 3. Accidentally cloned himself again... Join the Thurbers and their resurrected family dog on a frantic, funny and thought-provoking chase through history as they flee the attentions of Silverberg, the powerful Guardian of Time who has sworn to stop their meddling - PERMANENTLY. SO LATE SO SOON is a serio-comic story of growing up, messing up, and looking up to a parent who, not so long ago, was every bit as confused as you were... --------------------------------------- Pre-publication feedback which gives some further insights: "If you like Cory Doctorow's YA or The Time Traveler's Wife or Beverly Cleary or Roald Dahl or Calvin and Hobbes or 80s TV serials... then you'll enjoy this. SO LATE SO SOON is fun but touches on serious themes. There's 'gritty history' and genuine peril, but it's a modern, tech-literate adventure story designed to keep children turning the pages (which it does very effectively!)." "Fast paced time travel tale, laden with natty turns of phrase, "So Late So Soon" will have you leaping from chapter to chapter. Who is this Tony guy? How deep does his interference in time go and who will stop him! I read 10 chapters over a glass of wine in the kitchen while burning dinner. It scans like a movie script, the narrative instantly playing out in the visual cortex like the words are not even there. Gonna consume this garage science phenomena rapid and feed it to the weens for feedback. There's a multi series TV spinoff around the corner, gotta be. Dr. Seuss never stared into infinity like this." "It's partially entry-level SF and partially genre homage (can you spot all the namechecks?); steeped in the ...

The Life and Adventures of Bert by Mr Ross Anderson Graham 4.9 Stars (276 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

"You can love a dog so much, but you can never love them as much as you will miss them." A witty, heart-warming, and touching tale of a man, and man's best friend, brought together by a moment of fate. The Life and Adventures of Bert will make you smile, laugh, and shed a tear. This irresistibly charming memoir captures hearts and imaginations as we experience Bert's life from escaping a wretched existence, forming unbreakable loving bonds, to becoming one of Twitter's most loved dogs. You'll love this life-affirming book about an ordinary dog from humble beginnings because the love of a dog is universal and so many tales are relatable. Reviews 'The Life and Adventures of Bert' is a captivating book, beautifully balanced between doings and feelings, joys and sorrows, the human and the -well- Bert, the personal and the universal. Anderson delivers a brave and poignant memoir sharing the triumphs and tragedies, the testament of a dog's life.' 'If you ever had a special pet, one that changed you forever, then you should read this book. We know that our days with our beloved companions are precious, but we seldom take the time to record the sunrise swims or sunset saunters. The Life and Adventures of Bert captures those memories and reminds us how profoundly we cherish our once-in-a-lifetime companions. This story teaches about compassion, and about how love shared grows exponentially. Gift this to the pet parents, potential pet parents, kids who love animals, or anyone who understands that pet hair is just natural glitter!' 'The feeling of loving a dog and to be loved by a dog is something that is not easily described in words, and I seriously doubt it can be understood by those that haven't experienced it. Yet, in his book The Life and Adventures of Bert, Ross Anderson Graham manages to convey the mutual love, friendship and bond between a dog and his human to print. I had the pleasure of being one of Bert's first followers on Twitter. His good looks and ...

Quigley Tree: A Novel by Linda A Lavid 4.7 Stars (34 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Quigley Tree drops out of college. At age 23, she's been a complete failure. If she doesn't do something soon, her life will careen into a deep, dark, irrevocable void. Tick Tock. That soon is now. From the publisher: Five-Star Review from Readers' Favorite by Lorraine Cobcroft: Quigley Tree, the protagonist of Linda A. Lavid's novel of the same name, is a young woman with an odd name. A college dropout from a dysfunctional home, and recently escaped from a relationship with a narcissist, Quigley needs to find a new place to live, quickly. A unique idea sets her on a path to find accommodation in a motel in exchange for providing marketing help, but she eventually must admit she has no idea what she is doing. She is a complete mess and has no faith in her ability to do anything useful with her life. Yet a kindly couple takes her on, and, with their help, and the help of an elderly lady she befriends, she begins to reshape her life and overcome her self-destructive attitude. Quirky is the best adjective to describe this work by Linda A. Lavid. Quigley Tree is as quirky as the protagonist's name. Q (as Quigley calls herself) grew on me and won me over. I empathized with her deep feelings of insecurity and her struggle to come to terms with a fractured family and a chaotic childhood. As the story progressed, there were poignant moments, and Lavid presented some interesting perspectives on life. There were also touches of whimsy in this tale of resilience and determination. In classic literary fiction style, Lavid focuses her novel on the character and theme rather than the plot. Quigley Tree, the story, ambles along at a leisurely pace, tracking Q's growth and gradual acceptance of herself and adjustment of her attitude toward her defective mother. Pearls of wisdom are scattered in conversations with her elderly friend, her employers, and the man who eventually wins her affection. The ending tempted me to shed a few tears, touched by Quigley's care for her toddler ...

The Flowing Tide (Honourable Duncan Morant Book 2) by Alan Savage 4.5 Stars (2,745 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The second book in the Duncan Morant series, this is an epic tale of love, hope and survival. With France having fallen, by 1941 the Germans control every French port, turning the English Channel into a battleground where vast numbers of German schnell boats frequently clash with the handful of British MTBs charged with protecting the inshore trade. In the thick of the action is Lieutenant Lord Duncan Eversham, commanding an MTB flotilla. Already famous for having engaged and sunk a schnell boat, little does Duncan suspect that his life - and the lives of his crew members - will be turned upside down when they rescue the survivors of a sinking merchantman, amongst whom is the mysterious American Rebecca Strong, engaged on a secret mission for the British government... The second novel in the Duncan Morant series, The Flowing Tide is a dramatic page-turner that will appeal to the author's many fans, and to anyone who enjoys their historical fiction with lashings of drama and romance. Christopher Nicole (who originally published this book under the pseudonym Alan Savage) is a British author who has written more than 200 novels and non-fiction works under his own name and several pseudonyms, including Leslie Arlen and Alison York.

The Long Hot Summer by Steven Wilkens 4.5 Stars (14 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

An unforgettable tale of the civil rights struggle of the mid-sixties. A story of love and tragedy. A story of faith and endurance. Odetta had no intentions of making a stand for what was right. She lived simply, quietly, working as a civil servant for a white. She shopped at black owned stores and worshipped in an all-black Baptist Church. Although she would occasionally dream of traveling the world, she knew that would never happen without making waves, and she wasn't one to make waves. That was of course until the summer of 1965. In a span of just a few weeks she would experience the love of her life and great tragedy. She would be thrust to the forefront of a struggle that had been simmering since the end of the Civil War a century before.

A kidnapped twin sister. A cross-realm rescue mission. Weak and oddly-specific magic. Will an untested princess defy her doomed destiny? Princess Eloise's life has become dominated by the demands of the Court. The meticulous habits that got her through her days are no match for the disgusting rituals and creepy prophecies dictating her destiny. And the harder she tries to control her path to Future Ruler and Heir, the more she mucks things up. But when her wayward twin sister disappears, Eloise steps way out of her comfort zone to get her back. What she thought would be a quick rescue turns into a whirlwind of realm-crossing chaos fraught with imprisonment, embarrassment, and peril. Yet all of that pales in comparison to the shock she finds when she reaches her destination and nothing, including her sister, is what it seems. Can Eloise discover her inner strength in time to protect her family? The Purple Haze is the witty first instalment of the Western Lands and All That Really Matters epic fantasy series. If you like clever banter, vibrant medieval realms, and sly pop culture nods, you'll be enchanted by Andrew Einspruch's rollicking adventure. Toussaint L'Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines: The History and Legacy of the Haitian Revolution’s Most Famous Leaders by Charles River Editors 4.2 Stars (34 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

*Includes pictures *Includes a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "I was born a slave, but nature gave me a soul of a free man... " - Toussaint L'Ouverture The island of Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Antilles chain behind Cuba, and host to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti, however, covering the western third of the island, is a French-speaking territory while the Dominican Republic, which occupies the other two thirds, is a Spanish-speaking territory. The Dominican Republic, although classified as a developing nation, has never been struck to the same degree by the malaise of poverty, corruption of its neighbor, languishing in the lower ten percent of nations ahead only of some of the most conspicuous failed states in Africa. Many historians and analysts have posed the question of why, and the answer seems to lie in Haiti's uniquely tortured history. Hispaniola entered the European record in 1492 when Christopher Columbus made landfall on its southern shore during his first trans-Atlantic voyage, and he named his discovery in honor of the Spanish Crown that had funded and sponsored the voyage. Leaving the crew of the wrecked Santa Maria on the island, he returned to Europe, leaving his men to establish the foundations of the settlement of La Navidad and the first beachhead of the European seizure of the Caribbean and the New World. Columbus would revisit the island three times, leading a vanguard of pioneer colonists to commence the exploitation of the New World. The indigenous people of Hispaniola, the Tainos and Arawak, initially greeted the landing with ambivalence, but as more and more of them were enslaved, and as their country was occupied, they entered a period of precipitous decline. Through a combination of disease, the violence associated with enslavement and general assimilation, they had virtually disappeared from the landscape within a century. In the meanwhile, as the ...

Installing Karma: A Wuxia VRMMO LitRPG (Pay-to-Lose Book 1) by William Dickey 4.4 Stars (50 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

An action-comedy VRMMO LitRPG with a setting inspired by Wuxia and Xianxia stories and a hero that might have a few screws loose. The early reviews of Karma were insane. Some people emptied their bank accounts to purchase the required VR equipment. Others took the week Karma was set to release off from work. Tim Roberts took things a step further. He hadn't been able to secure one of the coveted slots in the beta, so instead, he started to train IRL. He hunted rats in the sewers, secretly escorted beautiful ladies down the street, chased down purse snatchers and pickpockets, and when the police refused to reward him, he thrust out a hand and shouted, "Fireball." Nothing would stop Tim from seeing his dream of becoming a pro gamer come true. When he first enters the game, Tim is horrified. With experience boosts, loot increases, stat-boosting talismans, overpowered AOE damage scrolls, time-saving fast travel, and instant resurrection, the monetization schemes seem endless. To the wealthy who can afford all these conveniences, the world of Karma is theirs to lord over. To everyone else, it's a struggle to achieve anything. Tim won't be having any of that. Forget pay-to-win. He's going to make all those scumbags pay-to-lose. He's going to give them a taste of karma. What to expect: • The comedy varies from clever to crude and is sometimes outright vulgar so avoid reading if you are oversensitive. • There is a lot of profanity. • There is some of what I'd call borderline sexual content (mostly one scene). Not explicit but not something you'd want a twelve-year-old reading either.

HO'OPONOPONO: A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE OF FORGIVENESS, PRAYER, AND HEALING FOR THE BODY AND SOUL by ARCELIO HERNANDEZ MUSSIO 4.8 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Christians are called on to examine everything. Ho'oponopono may be integrated into spiritual life by Christians for soul-cleansing and self-healing purposes. There is no need to believe in reincarnation or to worship other Gods. Love, forgiveness, reconciliation, and gratefulness can only lead to a positive state of mind, which may benefit many aspects, from health to success in relationships and business. Christianity and Ho'oponopono both recognize that it is God who can cleanse the soul. Our job is to petition the cleaning, for which Ho'oponopono provides an effective method, which may be added to Christian soul-cleaning practices such as prayer, reading the Holy Scriptures, and listening to sermons inspired by biblical teachings. In both traditions, soul-cleansing is a lifelong process. One must make this a way of life. Love, forgiveness, and gratitude bring about joy. We can choose to be free of the painful memories that burden our souls by making this mantra or prayer a habit. This book goes deeply into both traditions to find similarities and insights.

I can't see any features, but I can guess from their statures that they are both men. I don't know what species they are though, but given that they just witnessed me kill a vampire I decide it's time to get the hell out of here. At least they aren't blocking my path to the street. Just as that thought crosses my mind, I hear the back door to the club open and close. I don't want to take my eyes off the men in front of me, but I have to see who just walked out. To assess the new danger. Before turning to look though, I pull out my remaining weapon also hidden in my boot. A silver dagger. It's only really good for killing werewolves, but it can do some damage to other supernaturals too. I give the figures in front of me one last look, they haven't moved at all, and then glance behind me. My breath stops for a moment, and it feels like my heart stops along with it. *** Willow is a witch who hunts down and kills other supernaturals. After the Great Massacre of the Wiccan Community, their population had been decimated. So while they try to rebuild their population and plan their revenge, they take out as many supernaturals as they can. But everything changes for Willow when she meets Keaton, Everett, Aizen, and Devlin. This is a fantasy reverse-harem romance novel. It will have mature themes, including but not limited to, violence, sexual themes, sexual scenes (including light BDSM), abuse, and mentions of rape. Please do not read if you feel uncomfortable with any of these things or if you feel they will be harmful to your mental health.

The Discourse of Conflict: Nonverbal semiotics and discursive practice in Northern Ireland's Troubles 1977-82 by Warren Hately 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The Discourse of Conflict focuses on the "prison war" between Republican inmates and their British captors, and the subsequent "dirty" protest and hunger strikes, to deal with two problems central to contemporary philosophy: the unacknowledged bias of structuralist theory towards linguistic signs and the lack of a coherent theorisation of social conflict. To address these conundrums, Hately reconciles Saussurean and Peircean semiotics and then uses Ruthrof's corporeal pragmatics to break from the verbocentric idea of language as a closed system, showing instead that verbal meanings originate from the body, its senses and its imagination, as informed by the deixis of individual communities. With the transformation of linguistic semiotics into corporeality, Foucault's notion of discourse and the neglected category of discursive practice are then reworked to show how statements based on nonverbal signs might function discursively. The culmination of the 1970s Northern Irish prison war in the events of the 1981 hunger strikes offers a study that unites the focus upon nonverbal discourses with the examination of conflict. In exploring the ways in which Republican hunger strikers struggled for legitimacy with the prison authorities, Hately shows how previous notions of conflict, especially Lyotard's différend, are thrown into disrepute by a corporeal perspective recognising the intersemiotic and heterosemiotic character of communication. The availability of diverse semiotic media such as the visual, the haptic, the proximic, etc., offers positions in which conflicts may be regulated without ending in the stalemate Lyotard describes. The division of semio-discursive phenomena into verbal and nonverbal elements, and the tracing of the effects these elements have upon ideational and pragmatic planes of action, also reveal a variety of strategies related to conflict that are superposable upon other instances. As a result, The Discourse of Conflict suggests that the ...
