"Filled with ghosts, devils, and tricksters... This appealing volume will add diversity to folklore collections." -- Library Journal Rich in the folklore of his ancestors, Rudolfo Anaya's tales will delight young readers from across the globe. In stories both original and passed down, this bestselling and American Book Award-winning author incorporates powerful themes of family, faith, and choosing the right path in life. In "Lupe and la Llorona," a seventh grader searches for the legendary Llorona; in "The Shepherd Who Knew the Language of Animals," a shepherd named Abel saves a snake and gains the ability to understand the language of animals; In "Dulcinea," a fifteen-year-old dances with the Devil. 666: Mark of the Beast by Will Clark 3.8 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 24 minutes ago

This story depicts a scenario of how and why the Battle of Armageddon could happen in the near future. It incorporates current events and international relationships to show who is most likely to initiate that apocalyptic battle against Israel? That answer is simple, by considering who wants to destroy Israel at this very moment. Clearly, it's the Islamic nations. The leader of that battle will be the one-world leader at that time. This means the one-world leader must be a Muslim. Muslims might even consider him their Messiah, while he pretends to be the other Messiah. How can this happen? Simple. That leader is described in prophesy as the 'Great Deceiver.' He is such a great deceiver that no one really knows his home of origin. When his reign begins he will be lauded as a 'man of peace' and will be respected and revered by all nations. His power will begin by becoming leader of the ten European nations that once were part of the Roman Empire. Those countries will lose their historical identities and will become Muslim through continued massive immigration and exploding propagation. That condition will soon be achieved and will propel the Beast to unleashed power. Through treaties, sanctions, and threats, he will disarm countries and make them vulnerable to his real plans of destruction. He will also initiate his 'mark' to allow people to transact business. Without his mark, people will not be allowed to buy or sell items. The mark will be an interactive computer chip that will identify each person as a follower of the one-world leader. Once he has computer control over every person, he will evolve into the 'Beast' and begin his inhuman acts against humanity. Before this Beast can attack Israel, he must first destroy the strength of America. Presently, America is the 'great restrainer' that protects Israel against that planned annihilation. Can patriotic Americans repel the invaders who plan to kill them? Will the Islamic attacks at the Jezreel ...

Ri-iha-mo, Celestial Mountain Goddess: True Encounters with a Legend of the Himalayas by M.G. Hawking 3.7 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 29 minutes ago

Journey into the reality of an ancient legend through this unprecedented first-hand account to explore knowledge that for long millenniums has remained concealed under layers of myth, legend, and secrecy. Throughout Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and the mountain regions of India, there has endured an extraordinary ancient legend of "mountain goddesses" or "celestials" who, having arrived in antediluvian times, still dwell in a concealed inner region of the vast wilderness of the Great Himalayan Range. Transcribed directly from the archived field notes and journals of explorer M.G. Hawking's experiences in a closed and largely unexplored region of the Himalayas, this book contains detailed descriptions of three encounters Hawking and his companions experienced with what they believe were those fabled Himalayan Ri-iha-mo, providing first-hand accounts of the remarkable knowledge they revealed. Who, or what, are the Ri-iha-mo?The creation stories of ancient civilizations worldwide relate that their progenitors came from the stars, the sky, or the heavens. Native Americans recount that their antecedents were the "Sky People" or "Star Beings." The builders of Teotihuacan describe their gods as having descended from the heavens. Egyptian texts speak of their "bringers of knowledge" coming from Sahu and Sopdit (Orion and Sirius). The pre-Tibetan Zhang Zhung, the Maya, the pre-Incans, the Sumerians, and so many others, all express precisely the same story in diverse symbolic languages -- their ancestors came from the stars, bringing advanced knowledge and the gift of civilization. These cultures were greatly separated both geographically and chronologically, yet their creation stories are strikingly similar. What could explain this? The voluminous lore of the ancient Brahmaic and Egyptian traditions relates that in the antediluvian time of zp tpj (generally transcribed as Zep Tepi), the "first occasion" or "first time," mysterious, highly enlightened "gods" appeared in Egypt, ...

Billy, Eric & Adolf: One War, Two Brothers by Chris Whitfield 4.4 Stars (273 Reviews)    Price verified 54 minutes ago

In January 1941 with the Liverpool Blitz at its height, twelve-year-old Billy Whitfield was evacuated to live on a farm without running water or electricity in the rural town of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, an event that was to shape him for the rest of his life. In the same year, his elder brother Eric volunteered to join the RAF, subsequently serving as a flight engineer in Bomber Command, the most dangerous of the Allied Services. Based on the true story of these two brothers and their contrasting experiences during the Second World War, Billy, Eric & Adolf is a tale of courage, innocence and love, a poignant, funny and moving account of ordinary lives impacted by extraordinary times. "The newspaper headline read more like a plot line from an episode of Dad's Army. 'Hitler wanted sleepy Bridgnorth to be Nazi HQ after the invasion of Britain.' I laughed out loud... surely not? Innocently searching the internet for wartime photographs of the Shropshire town, I had inadvertently uncovered one of life's unexpected ironies. The article, from the Daily Telegraph 21st April 2005, explained that newly discovered secret papers had revealed Bridgnorth as Adolf Hitler's preferred choice for the headquarters of Nazi GB after a successful invasion of the British mainland. The town's central location, the nearby RAF base, the fortification possibilities from its unusual 'town on a hill' geography, all contributed to earmark the place as ideal. The documents proved that German invasion plans were still up and running one year after the Luftwaffe's Battle of Britain setback. They were dated 1941, the same year that my dad was evacuated away from the dangers of the Liverpool Blitz... and yes, he was sent to Bridgnorth. The absurdity of the young, twelve-year-old Billy Whitfield escaping the bombings by relocating to the town Adolf had chosen to make his home from home appealed to my sense of fun. The idea for a book about my dad's wartime experiences arose from conversations ...

America 20XX: The New World Order by Will Clark 4.6 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Although fictional, the characters in this story discuss many important events and practices occurring in the lives of every American, and many citizens throughout the world. The strong movement by leaders of many countries to establish what they term 'a new world order' is a hidden danger many citizens do not recognize. That idea concerns 'globalism,' where citizens of all countries are ruled as if they were citizens of only one universal country. How are we almost there, and what are the dangers of globalism? Our national resolve has been attacked, and influenced to accept globalism in three major areas: education, religion, and free speech. First is education. National education policies now promote a standard student rather than a successful student. Second, religion must be destroyed or diminished to allow world compatibility. Third, every free citizen must guard every word he or she says, or be subjected to criticism and threat by our government. What are the dangers of globalism? The dangers are many, but two dangers expose their ugly faces in the forefront. They are authoritarianism from the elite, and mediocrity from the masses. Why is a strong, independent, and separate America necessary? We must continue to be a beacon for the world. Without the example we set for every nation and every world citizen, those citizens will not be shown the vision of what can be if they strive for success. Progress and success are not free and random gifts. This novel answers the question: If America is ever defeated, how could it happen? If it were to happen, it would require conspiracy and treason from our highest level of government. It would begin with a federal constabulary, and supported by disregard for our Second Amendment. In this story, Vision is the new federal constabulary force established by U.S. President Arabar when funding is not available for states and municipalities to fund their own police and security forces. This major funding crisis results ...

The History of Eternity by James E. Winder 4.0 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

You cannot help but wonder what and why you are. The History of Eternity is a book that again and again answers these questions, as it celebrates the tragic joy of wonder at the enigma of your existence. There will always be a clamoring after elusive fact. There will always be a hankering for some durable theory that will explain the fact. There will always be an inability to match the one wholly with the other. Because something is always left out, there will always persist a stubbornly invisible and intractable remainder. And this remainder, this dark matter behind every thought, behind every desire, behind every joy, behind every sorrow, will continue to populate your universe with wonder. Read this book, if you will, and share that wonder. You are born into a conspiracy of significance, already entangled with your equally lonely others. The history of eternity, the tension between nowhere and now here, defines the struggle between the life you are living now and whatever there may be of the life to come. The History of Eternity is a series of broken elegies to those who have mattered, to their moments and your moments, to their sanity and your sanity, to their madness and your madness. The History of Eternity is one man's meditation on the reverberating shock of his encounter with Henry Adams, Aristotle, Augustine, Bach, Balzac, Beckett, Bergson, Bloch, Boehme, Bonhoeffer, Cervantes, Chekhov, Cicero, Claudel, Dante, Darwin, Derrida, Emily Dickinson, Dostoevsky, Eckhart, Emerson, Ezekiel, Faulkner, Gide, Goethe, Heraclitus, Herodotus, Hume, Isaiah, Henry James, Jeremiah, Samuel Johnson, Kafka, Kierkegaard, D.H. Quicksand (Lawrence Mallory Book 3) by Richard Hart 4.1 Stars (24 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

When private investigator Lawrence Mallory's daughter, Susanna, brings a note home from school, she's not the one in trouble. Her teacher is... It's March 1950 in Central City and the teacher in question is John Franklin. He is also North High School's legendary basketball coach, and he has something in his past which if it ever got out, could mean he'd be trading his classroom and coach's office for a prison cell. There's nothing Franklin won't do to keep that from happening. When he learns that his ambitious young assistant found out about the "something" and may be planning to use it to force him out, Franklin contacts Mallory about investigating the matter. However, he won't tell him anything about his past transgression other than it was an "unpleasant incident." Undeterred, Mallory goes back to school where he majors in murder with minors in obsession, blackmail, narcissism, and dark secrets from the pasts of nearly everyone he meets. He finds himself dealing with such things as: a rumor going around that Franklin killed his first wife, a student-run gambling ring complete with point shaving and the involvement of adult bookies, the assistant's flirtatious wife who's very much a daddy's girl, her father who's also president of the school board, and Frankin's best player, a troubled kid with a hot-tempered father and a best friend who's only in school because of the terms of his probation. In short order, the school board president almost loses his head to a shotgun blast, and Franklin vanishes leaving the body of a lady of the evening in his house. Then Mallory learns about a thirty-year-old murder that sounds a lot like the one Franklin was rumored to have committed. Along with his wisecracking wife, Kate, who is also his secretary, and Susanna, whose goal is to be Central City's first female homicide detective, he'll try to find some answers. But will this family of sleuths find them before another body turns up, quite possibly Mallory's? SPOILER ...

Found, Lost, Paved and Sunk: Paradise by Jay Maclean 3.6 Stars (12 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Where is paradise on earth? Somewhere far from the maddening crowds, the cold, the politics, work, of course. People have been searching for their paradise for centuries, even before taxation was invented. The stories of those who wrote about their exploits often reveal more about themselves than the nature of the paradises they sought and sometimes found. Did you know that Sir Walter Raleigh was the world's first pusher of paradise real estate? Or that among the explorers of tropical paradises, the infamous Captain Bligh of the Bounty was quite humane and considerate? Or that Captain James Cook was the first westerner to get a tropical, full body massage -- and was pretty coy about describing it? That the original Shangri-La paradise was a mix of ascetic monks on top of a Tibetan mountain and a tropical village of loose women at its foot? That Thor Heyerdahl and his first wife honeymooned for a whole year in a remote tropical paradise, leading to his Polynesian migration theory and the Kon Tiki expedition? Found, Lost, Paved and Sunk: Paradise explores the mind set of artists, beachcombers, colonial administrators, developers, explorers, hermits, missionaries, mutineers, philosophers, scientists and writers, not to mention the native residents who were already living in the paradises they sometimes describe. Learn about the mechanics and problems of living in a paradise, dealing with neighbors both onshore and offshore, housing, water, and health. Learn about the fate of paradises under colonialism and climate change. Learn also about the opinions of other animals and plants; where is their paradise? The world is changing irreversibly. Where and how does paradise fit into its future? And finally, what does it all really mean? Found, Lost, Paved and Sunk: Paradise tells all. The book is punctuated with tongue-in-cheek tips for paradise seekers but is entirely factual and extensively referenced with about 200 sources, from exploits of early explorers and ...

Spiritual Reflections – Volume 3: A Book of Poetry About Awakening, Enlightenment & Spirituality (A Spiritual Trilogy: Spiritual Reflections - ... by Ken Luball Price verified 53 minutes ago

Spiritual Reflections - Volume 3:A Book of Poetry About Awakening, Enlightenment & Spirituality is book 3 in A Spiritual Trilogy and consists of 250 additional Spiritual free verse poems. Though these poems are Spiritual, they are not religious. Each poem illustrates different aspects of Awakening, Enlightenment & Spirituality. Spirituality is the belief there is a piece of God (a Spirit or Soul) within every life and, because of this, each life is important, equal, and connected. My goal writing the three books of poetry in A Spiritual Trilogy and the four books in The Awakening Tetralogy was to try to Awaken and help others, who are Awakened, more fully understand what Enlightenment is, so their journey through life may be more fully realized. These poems consist of spiritual thoughts, anecdotes, and lessons Ken has learned throughout his journey through life. Growing Compassionate Children: Grower's Guide (Cultivating Compassion in Children) by Sonja Wendt (Enlight Publishing) 4.9 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

The world needs more compassion and where else to start than with raising compassionate children. This parenting book includes twelve steps of "growing" compassionate children, a Grower's Guide. It follows the steps needed to grow a healthy plant, starting with preparing the soil, where a plant can be deeply rooted in solid nutritious ground, like a child growing within a strong foundation made up of positive values and principles. There are stories and topics addressing the impacts of societal issues such as the use of social media, mental health, misdirected anger, and violence to focusing on acts of kindness, inclusion and acceptance. The topics are diverse and include math and science concepts as they apply to plants and growing compassionate children. It talks about the importance of knowing, understanding, and preserving our roots, where this knowledge and increased understanding leads to a more compassionate child. This is a great book for parent small groups with kids ages 2-12, and for a baby reveal or baby shower gift.

Can't Say I Love You: A YA romance to make you laugh and cry by R.M. Hudson (Book Burn Publishing) 4.1 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Reader's Reviews. "I loved this book. Ben is a 15 year old boy who attends a school for children with special needs and who are unable to attend a mainstream school. Ben has an anxiety disorder, depression and mild autism. His mother died when he was 2 and he lives with his father and older sister Jess. Ben is intelligent and articulate when he wants to be but most of the time he coasts through school doing the minimum amount of work necessary so as not to actually fail but not enough to reach what adults persist in calling "his potential". The only person who really 'sees' Ben is his sister Jess, but she has an unconditional place at Oxford university for the coming year and Ben is dreading her leaving. Ben has opinions on everything especially the teachers at school and his fellow students and is not afraid to voice those opinions which don't make him overly popular. Ben is taken to school each day by taxi along with 2 other boys until one day there is another person in the taxi and into his life comes Grace. Grace has serious mental health issues but she is funny and witty and jerks Ben out of his isolation. Unexpectedly Ben and Grace bond, until one disastrous encounter destabilises their relationship. This story is told mostly in Bens voice and is funny, sarcastic, sad, joyful and endearing. I loved Ben and Grace's story and highly recommend it." Laura, Goodreads. "This was such an interesting take on the process of growing up." Christine, BookSirens. "This is a coming of age story about two teens, Ben and Grace. It's about the complexities of teen love. It has its funny moments and sad moments too." Diana, Goodreads. "Quick read with R.M. Hudson's, Can't Say I Love You! My teacher heart loved Ben and his quirks and ways. Finding Grace for him gave him a new prospective on life." Teddie, Booksirens. "Deep and insightful, moving and funny," Mel, Amazon UK "I hated the narrator at the start, what an arrogant little man. SOLDIERS AND MARINES: A Novel of War (The Soldier's Wars Book 1) by Martin Archer 4.2 Stars (631 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

This is a very good read. It is the first novel in an action-packed multi-book military saga that follows the life of a combat soldier from his early years in the Korean War to his middle age in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere in Israel and the middle east in wars that are in the immediate future. It is fast paced and action-oriented as casualties and a willingness to sign up for additional front line tours and new wars result in Roberts shouldering responsibilities far beyond his years. Fans of WEB Griffin, Larry Bond, Tom Clancy, and Harold Coyle will enjoy this great addition to military fiction. Peace and Conflict is the second book in "The Soldiers and Marines" series. It follows Chris Roberts as he serves a peacetime hitch in Europe broken by several assignments to Vietnam - first with the fabled Second Parachute Regiment of the Foreign Legion as it goes down at Dien Bien Phu and then as an observer of the military's effort to defeat the Viet Cong. The third novel "War Breaks Out" describes the role and decisions of Roberts and his men when the Marines, reserves, and National Guard troops rush to Europe to reinforce NATO and participate in the intense war of air and armor that might have occurred if Russia's paranoid leaders had decided to invade Germany and fight NATO instead of giving up power and freeing their satellite nations. The fourth and fifth novels of the saga are set in the near future and describe the decisions and intense combat that may be about to happen: "War in the East" describes what happens when the US sides with Russia when China invades Russia to retake its traditional lands in the Russian east. The fifth, "The Israel's Next War," describes the intense combat and agonizing decisions that occur when the rise of militant Islam and the threat of nuclear war results in a coalition of Islamic Countries launching a surprise attack on Israel that permanently changes the boundaries and nations of the Middle East. The first ...

An Adventure through Alternative History with a light Steampunk Flavor! Russians! Revolutionaries! Revolvers!... Really beautiful women! This historical action story has it all! Another fast-paced adventure story from C.K. Shackleton. It is 1908 and news reporter Edward Prince is sent to Paris, France to hunt down a certain balding Bolshevik revolutionary who wants to take over the world... er, ahem... he wants all of his worker friends to help him take over the world and then they will be in charge... yeah, right. Needless to say, the meeting with this man doesn't go quite as planned. In fact, it is a disaster. Prince is chased through the streets of Paris and eventually into the arms of a beautiful woman who may or may not have to kill him... if he gets in the way of her mission. Written with love for a much more famous novel that took place in Russia and on a train, C.K. Shackleton punches you in the face over and over again with page-turning prose filled with action and adventure from the early 20th Century! About The Edward Prince Adventure Series The Edward Prince Adventure Series is an ongoing collection of stories that follows the adventures of Canadian-born-turned-American news reporter Edward Prince. In each adventure, Prince encounters various historical characters from the late 19th and early 20th Century, a forgotten era of much progress. It was a time when more mechanical inventions were invented and more progress was made than any other period in history. However, it was also a time that was fraught with danger! Prince always finds himself in scrape after scrape, only to escape either through his own wits or with the help of those he can trust. Each story is told with a focus on action, pace and dialogue. This leads to a shorter tale, but each Edward Prince story is a satisfying, stand-alone adventure that can be read in only a couple hours while sitting on a plane, sitting in a line, sitting in a waiting room, sitting on a train or sitting on the... ...

Unlocking Ancient Mysteries, Exploring History’s Most Intriguing Legends: Shambhala & The Kingdom of Kemet by M.G. Hawking 4.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Explore two of the most profound ancient legends, deeply intriguing mysteries that have fascinated and inspired millions since the dawn of civilization. Ancient history is the hazy vestiges of memory; far more of the secrets underlying the mysteries of the past have been lost than preserved. Even the earliest accounts of history were composed long after certain truths had lapsed from human memory, or were considered secrets too powerful -- or too sacred -- to be revealed. Yet legends inevitably arose in which fragments of those truths were preserved. Cradling the most isolated area of Earth's landmass, for thousands of years the inner region of the Great Himalayan Range has inspired countless legends of a hidden sanctuary of great masters possessed of all-encompassing knowledge. Although arising from sources greatly separated both geographically and chronologically, the legends are remarkably consistent. The 4000 year-old scriptures of the pre-Tibetan Zhang Zhung culture are thought to be the earliest extant references, yet the same hidden realm is represented in many ancient traditions: the pre-Buddhist B'on treaties, texts of the Kalki lore, the Puranas, and in the even more ancient Kalachakra Mulatantra. The Zhang Zhung scriptures refer to the hidden sanctuary as Shambhala I lam-yig, B'on treaties as Olmolungring, Hindu histories as Aryavarth, Chinese as Hsi Tien, and Russian traditions as Belovoyde. Absent an ember, there can be no smoke; there is a kernel of truth in all such ancient and enduring legends, and they cannot be easily, or wisely, dismissed. If this mysterious hidden realm still exists, who resides there? Why do they stay so carefully concealed? What knowledge do they possess? If encountered, what would they want us to know? Over ten-thousand years ago there appeared on the banks of the Nile, as if suddenly descended upon the sands, the first great civilization of known history, the Kingdom of Kemet. No one knows from whence the early ...

Companion to Divine Ascension: A Journey to Enlightenment via Selfless Service: Golden Nuggets from the Bhagavad Gita for Active People Engaged in ... by Keith Parker Price verified 7 hours ago

In the tapestry of spiritual exploration, Keith R. Parker's "Companion to Divine Ascension" threads an illuminating path through the profound teachings of the early chapters of the Bhagavad Gita, drawing upon the timeless wisdom of Karma Yoga. This work elucidates the idea that "When serving others' desires, we innocently renounce our own," offering a refreshing insight into the balance between self-sacrifice and self-discovery. The book delves deep into the essence of selflessness as verified by Krishna's teachings, revealing that true liberation and enlightenment stem from the fulfillment of duties without attachment to personal gain. Parker masterfully interprets these ancient scripts, making them accessible and resonant with contemporary seekers of spiritual depth and understanding. Through engaging narratives and practical examples, he revitalizes Krishna's call to action, encouraging us to dissolve our selfish desires through dedicated service to others, thereby aligning ourselves with the universal flow of creativity and fulfillment. As we navigate the complexities of modern existence, "Companion to Divine Ascension" serves as a guide to achieving higher consciousness through selfless action, embodying the spirit of Karma Yoga in every aspect of daily life. This book is not merely a reflection on spiritual principles but a call to live them authentically, making it an essential companion for anyone on the path to spiritual and personal liberation. See also Divine Ascension: Guidance from the Bhagavad Gita for Active People Engaged in Life, a tapestry of cross-referenced verses, scholarly discourses, and philosophical analyses that verifies this revival of Krishna's teaching on Karma Yoga through detailed analyses of verses from Chapter 2 through 5 of the Bhagavad Gita.

Luck Is For Losers: 150 Poems You Might Actually Like by Jack Flash 4.5 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

I'll be honest. This book took me less than a week to write. I went from not caring at all about poetry to writing a book about it. Fortunately for you, me not being an expert in "proper" poetry lets me do anything I want with it. And I have taken an axe to it's heart. I didn't want to write a poetry book about lovely endless green fields and that nice cloud over there. I set out to write something vital. Something that has energy, heart and soul in equal measure. 150 poems that you might actually like.

Gone Ghoul: A Lady of the Lake School for Girls Cozy Mystery (The Vega Bloodmire Wicked Witch Mystery Series Book 5) by Sarina Dorie 4.7 Stars (67 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

Unicorn tentacles. Fairy princes. Murder and Mystery -- Oh My! Wicked witches don't get mad. They get even. Vega Bloodmire has more important things to deal with than evil Fae and the unicorn tentacle porn they use to lure students to their deaths. She would much rather focus on her upcoming performance review as a schoolteacher, especially after she was fired from her previous school. She'd rather poke herself in the eye with a wand than run home to mommy and admit she couldn't make it in the real world as a working witch. Unfortunately Vega has no choice but to deal with the Fae and their disturbing literature choices when an evil Fae kidnaps -- and has the audacity to eat -- one of her students during the middle of class. With the principal breathing down her neck to be a better teacher, a wrathful librarian ready to punish someone for defacing a library book, and parents who want Vega fired for neglecting her class, Vega is only left with one option. She's going to have to destroy this Fae before more students get lured to their deaths. The Fae are going to learn they picked the wrong witch to mess with. Enjoy this spin-off series from the world of Womby's School for Wayward Witches. This book starts with Vega Bloodmire's life before working at Womby's when she was a new and inexperienced teacher at Lady of the Lake School for Girls. It is the first book in the series of stand-alone novels. These mysteries are meant to be read in any order. Clean, cozy, no sex or swearing, PG 13 -- perfectly fine for teens or grandmas who like paranormal mysteries at magical boarding academies.

Her name is Autumn. And she has a story too terrifying to ignore. When seventeen-year-old Eli Ackerman sees a young woman stranded on the side of the road in the rain, he does what any decent person would do. He offers her a ride. But Eli quickly realizes that this simple act of kindness is not going to be so simple when she tells him her story. Her name is Autumn, she says, and she's from the future. It's a joke, right? It has to be. But when the punchline doesn't come, Eli suspects that Autumn concocted the story to protect herself from a truth too terrifying to face. He gets a hint of what that truth might be when he sees the bruises on her back and realizes that someone has been hurting her. And when he sees the car in his rear view mirror, when he sees the silhouette of a man outside his bedroom window, Eli fears that Autumn is being followed. She won't tell him the truth, but Eli knows that the man who hurt Autumn is coming after her, that he wants to go on hurting her, and that he will kill anyone who gets in his way.

GORGE: a novel of suspense by Katherine Carlson 4.3 Stars (597 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

A LITANY OF CONFESSIONS. A MAZE OF TRIBULATIONS. A TEST OF ENDURANCE. Dangerously obese Marty Clawson persuades her cheating husband to dump her in the woods where she hopes to be scared skinny. But her fantasies about heroic outdoor survival flop as hard as her marriage. Dejected beyond measure, she takes a bus to Montana to visit an old high school suitor -- someone she once suspected too sinister to pursue. Turns out her initial suspicions about him were spot-on. She soon finds herself in the exact predicament she'd so long imagined. Only now she must outwit a vast wilderness... and sheer evil. Marty Clawson's got a big problem: 264 pounds' worth. Doc warns of dire consequences if something doesn't change, but Marty's already tried every diet on the market plus an endless list of her own concoctions. Still, she devises a NEW PLAN -- and unlike the others -- this one is terrifying: a rendezvous with the state park, a place she considers the very heart of darkness (and snack-free) where she won't emerge again until she is thin. Hubby Raymond believes the method too dangerous -- abandoning his super-sized wife like a broken dresser -- and refuses to help with her scheme; his crap attitude, along with everything else, changes when she catches him in bed with an aging porn star. Surviving the backwoods alone is challenging for a seasoned outdoorsman but unthinkable for a woman nearing red-alert obesity; yet, she believes it's her last chance to avoid eating herself to death. Despite Ray's newfound assistance, Marty fails at her plan. Desperate and depressed, she contacts Logan Myers, a peculiar boy from her past. Her hopelessness prompts her to accept his offer of bus fare north into the unforgiving Montana bush where he hunts and traps wild animals. Logan soon reveals himself to be far worse than she remembered. So bad that he tosses her to the elements as punishment for rejecting him. In a wicked and ironic twist, her once farfetched idea morphs into an epic ...
