Even as Julie worries about how her children are coping with the loss of their father and the recent move to their new ghost-town home in Mae's Second Chance, her youngest son is quietly searching through one of the centuries-old buildings for a treasure he believes that his father means for him to find. As they settle into their new life a friendly face from the one they left behind arrives unexpectedly. Julie is thrilled to see him... her kids are ecstatic. Anderson McGuire considered Dan Engstrom one of the best friends he'd ever had and wants to make certain for himself that everything is going exactly as it should for Julie and the kids. He was also far more curious than he was willing to admit about the honest to goodness ghost town they now called home. Once there he finds that the old saloon is exactly the project he needs to keep him busy even as he also helps out in the restoration of the town in any other way that he can. It isn't long before he realizes his assistance and support is needed in more ways than helping to fix up the two-hundred-year old buildings. Treasures Found is the second book in the continuing story of a family as they work their way through a tragedy and at the same time come to terms with the impact of a sudden and unforeseen financial windfall. The Fall of America: Fatal Encounters (Book 2) by W.R. Benton 4.4 Stars (266 Reviews)    Price verified 36 minutes ago

What if it all came crashing down? It started with the "Biggest" stock market crash in history. Banks shut down under the weight of their bogus investments, and the financial sector failed. People looked to the government to make it all better. They couldn't! Hyper-inflation, mass unemployment and infrastructure started to breakdown. The food trucks didn't show up at the stores and the shelves went empty. Things turned ugly fast when there was no power for long parts of the day... then forever. Things started falling apart quicker after that. Whole regions declared a "State of Emergency" in an effort to maintain order and civility, but it wasn't always enough. Starvation, looting and murder became the norm. Then, American civilization collapsed completely. The Fall of America: Book 2 continues John's story of survival and resistance after society breaks down. Russian invaders continue to try and pacify the areas of the South under their control. The American resistance groups divide their forces into small cells to better operate effectively behind enemy lines. But as their efforts begin to gain ground the Russians respond with harsh reprisals; mass executions become the norm and prison camps soon spring up in remote small towns. "Fear brings compliance," is their motto. The battle for control of Mississippi gets hot, and a violent world gets even more ugly. Can the U.S. partisans survive the overwhelming Russian Army and its thermal detection technology/helicopter gunships/and scorched earth tactics?

Best-selling author and fair lending expert, Tory Haggerty takes a deep dive into the history of redlining and racial housing segregation in the United States. He outlines and explains what most redlining cases have in common and gives financial institutions practical solutions on how to address these problems. Tory also breaks down several recent case studies, addresses appraisal bias, and so much more. "I was shocked by how much I learned, but more than that, his approach is non-threatening and the solutions are pragmatic. I have learned that the industry trusts him and relies on his education and solutions. Tory is passionate about fairness, but also about banking and the critical role it plays in our lives. His efforts bring value." -- MICHAEL L. STEVENS, President & CEO, Graduate School of Banking at Colorado "Discrimination in banking lending can have an effect on generations of Americans. Working to call attention to this and helping to end discrimination is an admirable cause. This is a cause that Tory Haggerty has been addressing for a long time. His new book, "The Thick Red Line" is another effort to push for fair lending practices. These efforts are to be applauded." -- GEOFF BACINO, Former National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board member, Former Federal Housing Finance Board member "Haggerty provides a passionate call to action and argues compellingly that through stronger anti-discrimination policies, improved financial education, and a collective commitment to expanding access to credit, we can finally start to unwind the harms caused by redlining. This is a must-read for anyone in the banking industry." -- MARK TREICHEL, Former Executive Director, National Credit Union Administration "Tory Haggerty is a true champion for helping community banks navigate the regulatory and compliance landscape in a way that serves the best interest of the public and community banks. The Experience of Alien Royal Servants in Thirteenth-Century England by Michael Ray 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 26 minutes ago

At the beginning of the thirteenth century, King John lost his Norman and Angevin lands to the King of France. The Anglo-Norman nobility had to choose which King to support and accept the loss of their lands under the rule of the King they had disowned. However, John continued to rely on his trusted Normans as soldiers and officials, many of whom were instrumental in preventing the son of the King of France from seizing the throne, first from John, and after his death in 1216 from his son Henry III. Despite their service to the crown, many of these aliens were disenfranchised during Henry's minority as the English baronage and clergy whipped up hostility against them. Henry later encouraged the arrival of two further groups of aliens into England, the Savoyards and Poitevins, who were relatives of his mother and wife. He lavished patronage on them as a way to consolidate his power both at home and abroad. In 1263 Simon de Montfort revived hostility against aliens in his war against the King. This whole period marks a pronounced awareness of the Englishness of those born in England. Henry's successors continued to employ and foster the careers of aliens but the Montfortian wars taught them to tread carefully. The chapters in this book cover the reigns of John, Henry III and the first three Edwards. They show how some families accumulated considerable rewards. Some weathered prejudice and became fully assimilated. Some did not and never established firm roots in England. What stands out is that all of the aliens studied repaid the Kings with loyalty and efficiency.

Holly Holmes Cozy Culinary Mystery Series: Books 1-4 Collection (Holly Holmes Cozy Culinary Mystery Sets Book 1) by K.E. O'Connor 4.6 Stars (473 Reviews)    Price verified 51 minutes ago

With its stunning turrets and beautiful rose gardens, I always thought Audley Castle was perfect, set in the idyllic English village of Audley St. Mary. It's a place I love to call home. But behind the trimmed hedgerows, stately gardens, and birdsong, a killer is waiting... If you enjoy beautiful English settings, twisty murder mysteries that leave you guessing until the big reveal, and adorable dogs, this series is for you. Book 1 - Cream Caramel & Murder After being forced to close my charming café in this quaint little village, I'm thrilled to get a job in the Audley Castle kitchens, making divine treats for visitors and serving the Audley family who live in the castle. The joy fades when I take my beloved dog for his daily walk, and he leads us to the body of a family friend, Kendal Jakes. Seemingly caught in the act of tampering with evidence by the castle's security team, I become the number one murder suspect in their investigation. It'll take more than my skills with a piping bag to solve this crisis. Book 2 - Chocolate Swirls & Murder When I get involved in volunteering at the prestigious annual food fair in the castle grounds, I'm shocked to learn about the death of a visiting pie seller. And it was no accident. When the castle's head of security tells me to keep my nose out as I ask a few questions, I know I should listen, but I can never resist a puzzle. Rather than focusing on perfecting my entry for the Audley Castle baking contest, I ask how a pie slicer got stuck in a man's back in a crowded food fair! As I investigate the victim's life (and death) I learn about his shady business dealings. Could that be the reason he was killed? Or does the presence of an ex-girlfriend have something to do with it? Book 3 - Vanilla Whip & Murder When the loveably eccentric Lady Philippa predicts that Blaine Masters, a guest of the Audley family, is about to die, I need to listen. It's eerie how she seems to see the future. I'm determined to warn Blaine, ...

Ultramarine by Victoria Mosley 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 51 minutes ago

''Life affirming, a beautiful read... '' ''I think Ultramarine is extraordinary, extraordinary and brilliant, and it keeps it up the whole way through. You are ''take me or leave me'' savage, and yet you write of things being so beautiful. The mixture of poetry and prose works well... Your originality is that you are deliberately talking to yourself. What I mean by that is that you are writing for the words. I am a bit awe struck!'' Nicholas Mosley. The Tibetan monks say that in some sense we choose our own incarnation, yet in the dark times all I could ask was why me? When I started to write this diary the reason became clear. This is a diary which runs from January to January, but it is a diary with a difference. The poems are written in the present and then the images and feelings that they evoked took me to scenes from my past, or to relationships that had their roots in my childhood patterns of relating. I wanted to write about the terror and abuse in my childhood in the way in which I learnt to deal with it, as a gateway to the Universe and to utilise each trauma a useful tool for my art. I learnt to look at myself from the outside in in order to cope and stay sane. The links between the ''now'' and the ''back then'' came naturally, I like the way that the poems morphed into something else, something strong and yet for me profound. I like the feeling that so much ugliness can create beauty.

Calm the Earth by Norman Barnes 4.8 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Detective John Chow stood mentally detailing the murder scene. The slumped body of a Calm The Earth programmer sat on the floor. That part resembled other unclaimed cases his boss threw his way, but that was where the similarities stopped. Above, the message blanketing the banks of computer screens on the wall intrigued Chow, "IT'S IN THE PROGRAMMING." Calm The Earth, was a mega-international world rights organization who's rise to prominence was unprecedented. It's connections to world leaders and membership growing into the billions made it stronger than any country. It's founder, Adam Dekker, was worshiped as a god. Chow's mind churned. Why murder this programmer? Why this warning about the program? Would it explain how a not for profit changed the political, economic and environmental ideals of the world? Chow shuddered. He knew this was not an eco-friendly case and he would need help. Lots of it.

Violence Redeeming: Collected Short Stories 2009 - 2011 by Stephen Donald Huff 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Though doting parents often teach their children the futility of violence, every rational human being also understands the hypocrisy inherent in such lessons, since life surrounds us with countless examples of practical solutions wrought in savagery. While each act of brutality inevitably debases all humankind, a maladjusted minority also recognize in it a tempting potential to make quick return on a prized reward. Perspective, then, becomes a matter of outcomes. Most of us will experience violence demeaning; few of us will know violence redeeming. Journey into the surreal and mysterious in "Constant Is the Sound", "Listen, Darling", "Tending the Garden of Evil", "Magicus", and "Airport". Have a frighteningly good time reading "They Walk", "The Tollbooth", and "Defile". Experience the true horror that is contemporary reality in "Bus Driver, Bus Driver", "Fatty, Fatty", and "Scrawl", or take a trip into the darkness of the past in "Spin the Wheels for Ill" and "Envoy to Klis".

World of Shawn by Jordan M Ehrlich 4.1 Stars (30 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

This is the story of a lonely kid who develops a computer game, using what little of quantum physics that he has read, that renders game levels from maps of any format; the result is just a little too realistic. When he tries to combine this "World of Shawn" with a favorite game of his childhood, "World of One," he soon finds Worlds colliding, to the detriment of his friends. Shawn must step up and rectify things, rescue the princess and save the World. The interaction and constant dialogue between the characters in this story, as well as the humor and action intertwined, have drawn comparison to that in such works as "The Lord of the Rings," "Harry Potter," and "Narnia," so if a reader has an interest in any of those, as well as an interest in video games, either in the past or the present, it would be a safe bet that they would enjoy getting to know Shawn and his World! -- "Your Hero" (Book Excerpt) I watch you from afar, You don't know who I am, But I care for you, And would die to defend you. You are my Princess, And I am here to save you. I am Always, Your Hero -- "The One" (Bonus Material) When no one else is around, you are the one who listens. When all is darkness, you are the one who turns on the lights. When the evil in this world seems to have overcome the good and all that was once true is utterly gone, You are the one who keeps me going just one more day. You are the one that holds back the tide. You are the One. -- These are songs that helped me in the development of "World of Shawn" and songs that help recall scenes and elements from Shawn's World, in chronological order. These would also be awesome for a WoS movie soundtrack, if a movie was ever produced! More will be added as I recall them: 1. Live For The Night - Krewella 2. Surrounded - BT+Aqualung 3. Atmosphere - Kaskade 4. Another Night Another Dream - La Bouche 5. Wake Me Up - Avicii+Aloe Blacc 6. Creep - Radiohead 7. Tidal Wave - Sub Focus+Alpines 8. Wild One Two - David Guetta+Nicky ...

Sir Humphrey’s Last Stand: A Medieval Romp (The Peasants Are Revolting) by Jonathan Forth 3.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Sir Humphrey's Last Stand takes readers on a medieval romp in a story with a tenuous grasp on reality, and history. Despite the doom and gloom, everyone seems pretty perky indeed and there is a scattering of buffoonery throughout. The King of France has routed the incompetent English, who can't decide whether to fall asleep on the job or shoot themselves in the foot first - with an arrow of course. Only Sir Humphrey and his men at Mont St Bernard remain on French soil. French spies have infiltrated the Mont, but their dashing looks attract the attention of the lust-struck women of the castle. The local Mayor can't make up his mind whether he supports the English or French, depending on who is holding a knife to his throat at the time. A gallant young knight and a lady in waiting find themselves unwittingly trying to save the day as they encounter colourful characters and a pirate or two along the way. Unfortunately despite his military might, battles won and being ordained by God, no one seems to take King Louis very seriously. But perhaps his greatest threat to defeating the English are the two dimwit conscripts who slowly but surely cause havoc in everything they touch. ***********I*I "It is the minor characters who have all the best lines... quite a few chuckles along the way. Just don't take it seriously!" Actual history goes out of the window in this amusing tale by Jonathan Forth. King Harold the Donkey wants the lands he believes are his by right and King Louis (unnumbered) has other ideas. Incompetence reigns in the English ranks as they consistently lose battles and are forced to retreat back to England. Unfortunately, nobody has thought to tell Sir Humphrey, who holds the last stronghold of Mont St Bernard. Or rather, he has been told, but in a mix up in communications, he has been told to hold the small township instead of abandoning it. As in other novels by Mr Forth, it is the minor characters (with names like Clive and Pondscum) who have all the ...

The Simplest of Truths: Our Earthly, Human and Spiritual Ecology by Gregory Tutt 4.5 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Fourth Edition The Simplest of Truths is a blend of essays and stories that focus on spirituality and relationships. It does not fit neatly into any mainstream ideology but instead centers on principles of fair-mindedness and respect as a foundation to traditional morality. While the framework of the book is on the religious side, its tone is less evangelical and more social and philosophic. Its purpose is to help reveal inner peace and kindle a sense of harmony. To press upon everyone the need to create an environment where the spiritual and the physical are in balance and that the individual and the community have a shared commitment and responsibility to the other's wellbeing. Condensed down to the very basics, the higher awareness we have of ourselves in relation to others and even with the world around us stems from the spiritual gifts we receive from God. Yet, enlightenment does not start until we recognize those gifts and then apply them by embracing three truths: peace, equality, and the sanctity of life. Uncovering the peace at our core is not a simple matter; however, once revealed and then paired with the two mandates, these three truths together have the power to transform our lives, our religions, our politics, and our world. For each of us, this starts by accepting the peace within, the God within, or maybe just the idea of a connection to a higher conscious and living universe. This spirals outwards from each of us when we embrace the mandates of equality and the sanctity of life. These truths should become the bedrock of our lives. Building upon this, we also need to adopt the principles of respect, honesty, integrity, and wisdom. These are our other defining principles, and these values are the living soil that rests upon the bedrock of the simplest of truths, and out of this fertile soil thrives truth and love. These emanate from the peace within, but they also must exist through the harmony of all our relationships that surround us, in both ...

A Dreamtime Dominion: Poetry Noir 1996 - 1997 by Stephen Donald Huff Price verified 4 hours ago

Mad pathos fetish broods while the black brow is creased to contemplate all manner of undoing, lays a thumb to the blade beneath a leering, sanguine eye and yearns unspeakably for a final message from God. Gross pathos fetish seethes to feed upon frustrations and terrors until the mind of a single lunatic is filled with dreams of dark endeavors that become a horror of blood, until pale the gaping face festooned in spider webs of splatters beholds a hand trembling at the wound, and moans out a final message to God. Drear pathos fetish blooms, that from an unwholesome vacuum, that from a fog of unfocused movements, a single buoying thought is borne, which thought becomes a thing of steel and lead and of murders' rich rewards; which thought looses fate's prolific forefinger within the guard to draw down the roughly righteous intent of God. Cruel pathos fetish feeds ever at the salted bonds of sanity as rats' teeth at the hemp, strands snapping, snapping to withstand the vigor of the unbearable load and let it down soft by inches, that each maddening hitch force a quick breath and quicker prayers to God. Poetry knits the fabric of our dreamtime dominions. Both are without substance, and both present the subjective essence of a spinning compass. Embrace such insight, if you must, but do so at your own risk - nothing here will light your darkness.

The Secret of Linden Court by Thomas Stimson 4.2 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 46 minutes ago

How far would you go to keep a secret? In a quaint European city so old that Roman coins are still unearthed in the back gardens of trim little houses, the single, thirty-seven-year-old junior file clerk of the City Tax Department thought he knew every street, lane, boulevard, alley, thoroughfare, highway and byway within the city limits... until now. Stuck in the back corner of an ancient file cabinet, Andre Kosowicz finds an old, faded street record and discovers evidence of a neighborhood he has never heard of: Linden Court. With no taxes paid by residents since before the Nazi invasion, he believes Linden Court has long since been paved over or bombed out of existence. To satisfy his curiosity, Andre heads to Olde Towne where, with a little snooping a lot of luck, he finds a bustling cul-de-sac of homes and shops in the shadow of an ancient linden tree. Rather than reporting his discovery to the city for recognition and rewards, Andre befriends a variety of colorful Linden Court residents as diverse as Madame Ra'Coone and her House of Fashion, gay gallery owner and art historian Szymon, the neighborhood's barkeep Franz, a former member of the Resistance known as The Alley Sniper and his hot-to-trot niece Sophie. How long can Andre keep his discovery a secret from the tax department, his bitter boss and the aloof college graduate who has suddenly taken a liking to him? And how has Linden Court been able to hide in plain sight for over twenty years? This Kafkaesque mystery set in 1960's Eastern Europe blends Woody Allen's romantic nostalgia with Coen Brothers hilarious plot twists to keep you guessing until the very end. Added Short Story Bonus! Glen Watkins, a retired American with a tragic past, rents a room in Stroud, England, to hike and explore the hilly, picturesque countryside. Stroud teens Darren and Ian find a loaded shotgun and decide to play at hunting while the townsfolk are at home watching the royal wedding on the telly. When Glen does not ...
