The Many Shades of Midnight (Tales of Isyr Book 1) by C M Debell 4.5 Stars (49 Reviews)    Price verified 14 minutes ago

A plague of monsters. A deadly conspiracy. A truth that will shatter the world. Isyr. Stronger, brighter, more beautiful than other metals. Once the most desirable thing in Ellasia, now it is priceless, the pure Isyrium needed to produce it mined to exhaustion. What's left is controlled by the powerful mining syndicates, and such is the demand for their Isyrium that even kings do their bidding. Yet just as the beauty of Isyr hides a deadly secret, so too do the syndicates. A terrifying enemy is spreading a plague across the land, a sickness that kills or transforms everything it touches. Unable to contain the outbreaks, the King of Lankara begs the aid of his disgraced former military commander, Alyas-Raine Sera, a man who has spent years fighting syndicate expansion and whose resentment over his exile makes him an unpredictable, dangerous ally in the power struggle between the rulers of Ellasia and the mining companies. Attached to the envoy to recall Alyas, the apprentice surgeon Brivar finds his skills and loyalty tested as his service to his new patron uncovers secrets about Isyr and the plague that link it to the mining of Isyrium - and threaten the life of the man it is his duty to safeguard. In their own separate ways, Alyas and Brivar must take on the might of the syndicates and confront the greed, murder, betrayal and impossible choices of a crisis that has been decades in the making - and the price of their failure could be everyone and everything. The Many Shades of Midnight is a gritty political fantasy about friendship, sacrifice, and the fight for survival in a world where greed drives everything and no one can be trusted. If you enjoy complex characters, intricate world-building, and high-stakes intrigue, you'll love this standalone grimdark fantasy.

RAFAEL CADENAS Poesía y destino: Prólogo de Freddy Castillo Castellanos (Spanish Edition) by Varios autores 4.6 Stars (20 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

The Most Terrifying Places on Earth: Searching Through the World's Most Horrifying and Scary Locations by Conrad Bauer 3.7 Stars (85 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Prepare to be frightened... very frightened by these extraordinarily scary places most of us probably never knew existed! The world around us is a scary place. With danger lurking around so many corners, the threats we can explain are often easily quantified and dismissed. Rather, it is the unexplainable, the paranormal and the strange which present the biggest threats to our psychological well-being. All across the planet, certain places and buildings have come to represent these abnormal and unexplainable phenomena. From ghosts to genocides, brutal murders to witches' covens, these locations are both hyper specific and universal. In almost every town, village or city, there is often an area where people are wary. A certain building people say is haunted, or a home they know has a particularly gruesome past. People might warn children to stay away, these buildings might form the backbone of some local folklore, or they might actually be condemned and restricted to the public. In these buildings our imaginations run riot and we wonder what could be possibly be lurking down the long, dank and dark corridors. But not all of these places are created equal. In this book, we will examine some of the most terrifying, strange, bizarre, odd and depressing places on earth. These might be haunted homes or the resting place of a murderous maniac. Some have been created by the evils of modern man while others are tributes to ancient and dark mysteries we still struggle to explain. The one thing they share is their ability to chill you to the bone. But as you work through this list, the true extent of humanity's capacity to imagine the horrific should not be underestimated. When you are ready to learn about some of the worst places in the world, like the island of the doll in Mexico, the Paris catacombs, the Hell fire Club in Ireland, the Ridges in the USA and much more... just read on! No-one Else But You: Six Dialogues on Human Relationship by Paul Dimmock 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The war on the military battle-field or in the streets of the foreign city, where it is now usually fought, is no different in kind from the war being waged constantly within the individual human mind. There may be a difference of degree but essentially they are one and the same thing. The individual human mind has amassed a wealth of evidence to support the notion that it is an important separate identity and, put very simply, that sense of being a separate identity is the first step to murder. From the idea of my self comes all the rest of it -- my self-esteem, my values, my family, my tribe, my nation, my culture, my beliefs, my rights, and so forth -- and thus the foundations are laid from which one views the whole of the world. One may view that world positively or negatively, or sentimentally or coldly, depending upon the nature of the personal foundation; but whichever way one views the world, it is a personal viewpoint born out of all the accumulated memories and interpretations of one's own experiences and responses both good and bad. This notion of individuality is bound to bring about conflict with others, conflict in varying degrees and with varying forms, from our minor domestic disputes to the full-blown military campaign. If we don't transform society -- which is equally where we work or where we live -- then who will do it? Who will transform society? Who or what will bring about the end of our conflicts both internal and external? Or is conflict the eternal human condition and nothing will change it? The great organised efforts of the past have all failed whether those efforts have been made in the religious, in the political or in the philosophical arena. They have all failed. Man is still fighting man, still hiding in his own corner of the world trying to stay safe, still self-protective and defensive, perhaps angry at some things, guilty about some things, fearful about some things, puzzled about some things. That is the life of man, generally. ...

Unheard of only months before, aerial warfare was rapidly coming of age, bringing a new breed of heroes who would transform the face of battle for ever. Time was running out for the old rulers of the air - the Richthofens, Mannocks and McCuddens who had terrorised the skies unchallenged, secure in their individual genius and daring. New tactics, designs and men were taking to the air, and the newly-formed RAF was introducing a professionalism that would change the course of the war. This is the story of the men who fought in that fateful year - the men whose bitter struggle was to bring about the aces' twilight and the dawn of modern warfare. Charlie's Crystal Skull (Charlie's Quest: Mysteries of the Ancient World Book 2) by Renee Wehrle 4.6 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Charlie knows she has something remarkable -- something otherworldly -- as she studies the crystal skull she found in a gloomy tomb in Mexico. But she can't tell her parents yet, since she has been rummaging around after dark in the jungle of Maya ruins, potentially defiling sacred archeological finds. The feeling she gets from the skull reminds her of when she and her best friend, Wolf, first met Osiris, the god of resurrection, on their last adventure, in ancient Egypt... Then the skull speaks to her. Charlie has seen parts of the world most kids only hear about, as her parents take her on archaeological adventures around the globe. But she doesn't feel so lucky when she learns the crystal skull belongs to the legendary Queen of Xibalba, who sends Charlie on a dangerous quest. She's joined by Wolf (who's grown disarmingly tall and handsome since she last saw him!) and a mysterious little storekeeper with bushy eyebrows and a deep knowledge of the jungle's secrets. Will the two teenagers and their quirky guide be able to return the skull to its rightful owner -- much less survive the journey to the past? If you dream of traveling to undiscovered places or learning about the mythical past, this series will take you on unchartered adventures. If you enjoy the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, or the Percy Jackson book series, or mystery adventures like the National Park Mystery Series, you'll love Charlie's Crystal Skull. Charlie's fantastical journey continues.

How to Serve the Lord with Confidence and Enthusiasm by James Thomas Lee Jr Price verified 2 hours ago

This text has been written in response to a question that I was asked at a Wednesday night Bible study at Wallers Baptist Church in Partlow, Virginia. The question which had been asked by the church's pastor had been in regard to the obvious enthusiasm that some of the saints of God seem to have for the Lord's work. The study that evening had been in Acts 13:13 which talks about the Apostle Paul's first Bible-recorded missionary journey. It says, "Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem." So when the company had arrived in Perga, the above verse says that John Mark had returned to Jerusalem. Exactly why he might have gone back is not known for certain. He might have been too afraid to continue since there had already been some opposition to the message that Paul and the others had tried to deliver. He might have felt the Lord leading him home at that particular moment. But the real question that had been posed by the pastor had been why the others had continued the journey since their task had obviously been so dangerous. In answering that question, the model about which this text has been written was developed. The quick answer to the pastor's question is that Paul and his company had had a general desire to do what the Lord had wanted them to do. When they had understood exactly what He had wanted them to do, their general desire had become a specific desire. Then when what the Lord had wanted them to do had been an exact match to their spiritual gifts, their desire had been raised to an even higher level. They had no longer just been doing church work. At that point, they had been serving the Lord with confidence and enthusiasm. Thus, this text has been written to explain how that can occur for any saint of God. The conclusion is that it is possible to not just do work for the Lord. But it is actually possible to serve Him with confidence and enthusiasm. The ...

"Lyzaria! How did I explain the forest to you?" My father gave me a stern reprimand. The fury in his words made me wince, and I swiftly withdrew my palm from inches from the tree trunk. I apologize, father; I was powerless. "The trees are really gorgeous," I said as I turned to face him. His face soften a little, and he takes me in his powerful arms. I press my face against his shoulder and put my little arms around his neck. He gives me a strong hug before carrying me out of the woodland. "Why can't we go into the forest?" As we climb the slope, I inquire, glancing over his shoulder to see the crimson and gold leaves gradually fade from view. He sighs, "The forest is a dangerous place." "How can something so beautiful be so dangerous?" I muttered, perplexed. "The danger is in its beauty."

Angel of Death: Life of Serial Killer Donald Harvey (Serial Killer True Crime Books Book 11) by Jack Smith 4.0 Stars (93 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Cold Blooded Murderer or Angel of Mercy? Ronald Harvey claimed to have killed 87 persons under his care. This is his story from his first to last breath. Sometimes it seems that each new serial killer caught ends up being convicted of crimes more heinous than his predecessors -- but Donald Harvey takes the crown. Born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1952, the "Angel of Death," as he liked to be called, had committed 13 murders by the time he turned 18. He grew up in an abusive and hostile environment, but all who came to know him described him as a "good boy." None of them would have guessed that this boy could commit cold-blooded murder without batting an eyelash. On March 30, 2017, the Angel of Death finally took his last breath at the Toledo Correctional Institute. But what spurred this man to commit 87 murders in the span of 17 years? He claimed to have started killing to "ease the pain" of hospital patients but later confided that he liked the feeling of control. Whatever his motive, Donald Harvey was undoubtedly among the most ruthless and heartless criminals ever to plague the United States. Remember Flight 93: A True Story of American Courage by Richard Roy Blake 3.0 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

The story of Flight 93 on 9/11, the story of how a plane that was only a quarter full, thwarted the intention of terrorists to destroy the U.S. Capitol or White House, ought to have been one of the most inspiring, oft repeated, American legends. Sadly this is not the case. Most only know the name of one of the heroic passengers and crew and a single stirring line. Names they most probably do not know include Thomas Burnett, Jr., who in four phone calls to his wife in California realized the hijackers true intentions. They also probably do not know the name of United 93 Jason Dahl, who in his dying act pushed a button which caused the cockpit to broadcast unbeknownst to the terrorists. Or of Jeremy Glick, who in his last phone call clearly knew he was likely to die told his wife he loved her and their new baby, but that the passengers were going to hold a vote to decide whether they were going to try to storm the cockpit. He asked his wife, Lyzbeth, how she thought he ought to vote. Fewer still have probably heard the names of other heroes and heroines such as Cee-Cee Ross Lyles, Mark Bingham, Honor Elizabeth Wainio, Alan Beaven or Mickey Rothenberg. The passengers and crew that survived the initial hijacker takeover placed 35 airphone and two cellphone calls from Flight 93. The actions of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 did more to dissuade 9/11 style hijackings than the billions spent by governments in that same cause. The Abducted Heiress: An Alex Booker Thriller by Al Macy 4.3 Stars (265 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Alex Booker is sixty going on sixteen. Literally. A genetic experiment de-aged his body and turned him into a teenager. Because of his wise old mind, he's cautious and thoughtful. But adolescent hormones don't do "cautious." Although he'd been an accountant in his "former life," impetuous young Alex has chosen to become a private investigator. Bad idea. Business is slow -- who would hire a detective who looks like he belongs in high school? When heiress teen Misty Langwell disappears, the police wait for a ransom demand that never comes. Desperate, Misty's parents turn to Booker and Associates for help. Alex is perfect for the job. He's just the man -- or kid -- to go undercover. Her disappearance turns out to be much more sinister than a simple kidnapping, and Alex soon finds himself stuck in a prison camp deep in the Amazon jungle. Is he in over his young head? If he can't find a good balance between wisdom and impulsiveness, Misty will never be seen again. And neither will Alex. The Abducted Heiress may be read as a standalone book or as Book Two in the Alex Booker series.
