The purpose of this article is to reclaim the heritage that is the foundation of contemporary qualitative research in the Chicago School tradition. The philosophy of science of this tradition is American pragmatism as found in the work of Jane Addams, W.I. Thomas, John Dewey, and colleagues. Pragmatism is based on democratic values of equality, dignity, and self-determination, and it advocates action to promote these values. The methodological principles that emerge from these values include an emphasis on understanding the experiences of others, researcher reflexivity, recognition of multiple points of view, recognition of the multiple influences on these views and experiences, the constructed nature of experience, the importance of researcher immersion in settings and perspectives of interest, the provisional nature of knowledge, and the importance of theory as both guidance for research and as a product of research. In the final years of the nineteenth century until about 1918, applied women sociologists who lived and worked at a social service agency called Hull House, African American male sociologists who could not find jobs at universities, and white male faculty from several disciplines at the University of Chicago collaborated and theorized about the social problems and issues that were right in front of them in the city of Chicago. In 1904, William James gave this collaboration the name Chicago School. It is this heritage that I explore in the present article.
