Perhaps a Little Madness by C J Martin (Independently published) 3.9 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Three men, two very different sisters, and not enough jobs. After the death of their father, Helen and Julia Andris find themselves with no income and university studies to finish in subjects that have little use in the modern world. Their family is a jigsaw of highly contrasting and frequently clashing personalities. And the men they fall in love with have work and family problems of their own. C J Martin reinterprets Jane Austen's beloved Sense and Sensibility for the twenty-first century. With evocative settings in urban and country Australia, careful crafting of plot and an empathetic conception of character, this is an insightful tale of family, love, and the conflicting force of ambition. Love can make us all a little mad.

El Diablo: Max Reeves Book 5: Classic Western and Frontier Adventure (Max Reeves, Classic Western and Frontier Adventure) by Robert Harvey 4.4 Stars (1,919 Review)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

Max Reeves was continuing his exploration of the frontier territories. The wild towns, meeting pilgrims who had travelled from the East to make better lives for themselves by carving out farms and homesteads from the wilderness. In some respects the gunfighter had mellowed over the years and found chatting with folk not such a burden, although he'd never much to say. All the hard fighting and chasing down outlaws had taken their toll. He had scars all over his body in testament to his physical toughness in a fight. His solitary figure and the wild Black stallion war horse he rode were the stuff of stories and legend in many parts of the West. Max paid them no attention and never stayed long anywhere. It would be a mistake to do so and a lesson he'd learned the hard way. There was always some gunslinger looking to make a reputation as the slayer of Max Reeves, bounty hunter and protector of the weak and innocent. Bushwhackers most of them. Better to keep moving. Now there was trouble at the Mexican Border - looting, killing, stealing and then crossing back to Mexico and out of the reach of the US Marshalls. The leader was a phantom, and they needed someone to find him. There was only one man for this job, but Randy Wade knew that talking wasn't going to convince Reeves to join the Marshalls. When Patty Maguire turned up Max knew for sure there was trouble brewing for him. Patty had made a name for herself in law enforcement with the Pinkerton Agency. She had come a long way from the young girl he first met in Silverton. And that is how Max finds himself in Mexico with Wolf. Things are not looking good! Just when he thinks he's got it figured, another double cross. But they don't know who they are dealing with. He is the judge and jury, and with his 2 peacemakers justice will be served.

The first and greatest adventure of Tarzan and the inspiration for a new feature film starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, and Samuel L. Jackson. Born to English aristocrats marooned in the dense West African wilderness, John Clayton, only heir to the Greystoke estate, is orphaned soon after his first birthday. Adopted by the she-ape Kala, he is given the name Tarzan, or White-Skin, and grows up among the apes, swinging from tree to tree and fighting the great beasts of the jungle. He has no memory of civilization, but discovers, in the books his parents left behind, the key to his strange appearance, and to his past. When a party of white explorers arrives, Tarzan finds himself drawn to them -- in particular, to the American Jane Porter. For years he has been torn between two identities, human and ape, and after saving Jane's life he follows her to Paris and then to America, experiencing the unfamiliar world of his birthright before the call of the jungle brings them both back to Africa. Originally published in 1912 in the pulp magazine All-Story, Tarzan of the Apes introduced to the world one of literature's most iconic characters. The star of twenty-four books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, as well as countless film, television, and comic book adaptations, Tarzan forever remains the Lord of the Jungle. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

The Pilgrim's Progress: The Unabridged and Complete Edition (John Bunyan Classics) by John Bunyan 4.7 Stars (558 Reviews)    Price verified 57 minutes ago

The Pilgrim's Progress from This World, to That Which Is to Come is a 1678 Christian allegory written by John Bunyan. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of theological fiction in English literature and a progenitor of the narrative aspect of Christian media. It has been translated into more than 200 languages and never been out of print. It appeared in Dutch in 1681, in German in 1703 and in Swedish in 1727. The first North American edition was issued in 1681. It has also been cited as the first novel written in English. According to literary editor Robert McCrum, "there's no book in English, apart from the Bible, to equal Bunyan's masterpiece for the range of its readership, or its influence on writers as diverse as C. S. Lewis, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, George Bernard Shaw, William Thackeray, Charlotte Bronte, Mark Twain, John Steinbeck and Enid Blyton. The words on which the hymn "To be a Pilgrim" is based come from the novel. Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county prison for violations of the Conventicle Act of 1664, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Early Bunyan scholars such as John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's second, shorter imprisonment for six months in 1675, but more recent scholars such as Roger Sharrock believe that it was begun during Bunyan's initial, more lengthy imprisonment from 1660 to 1672 right after he had written his spiritual autobiography Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway (Aeons Classics) 4.0 Stars (13,702 Reviews)    Price verified 27 minutes ago

The quintessential novel of the Lost Generation, The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway's masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful writing style. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the novel introduces two of Hemingway's most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. It is an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions. First published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises helped to establish Hemingway as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.

"The Knights of the Cross" follows the adventures of Macko, a resourceful and wise veteran of war, and his young nephew, Zbyszko, the symbol of a maturing nation, as they struggle, along with the unified peoples of Poland and Lithuania, against the oppressive religious military Order (Knights of the Cross/Teutonic Knights). He swears to her his knight's oath and promises to bring her 'three trophies' from the Teutonic Knights. The eNotated Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll (eNotated Classics) 4.4 Stars (594 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Though most ebooks are simple conversions of paper books, "The eNotated Hunting of the Snark" is a completely new approach that takes advantage of ebook technology by providing comprehensive eNotations (electronic annotations), essays, and background information conveniently accessible through links and a active table of contents. Written by Pam Sowers, researcher, journalist, and long-time "Snark" fan, this background biographical, historical, and interpretive information reveals a "Hunting of the Snark" not visible to most readers. Sowers notes in her introduction that Snark is "a poem that 'describes with infinite humour the impossible journey of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature,'" a kind of "'Odyssey of the Nonsensical'" that "unlike the 'Alice' books, is not intended only for children", adding that "through the decades, 'the poem has continued to attract a small cult following of adult readers.'" Comparing Snark to "Through the Looking Glass," Sowers say "Much of the poem shares words and ideas that first were used in the poem 'Jabberwocky' in 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.'" but with "'less exuberance and wordplay and more adult fear and anxiety throughout' Despite having the overall theme of a quest, as 'Jabberwocky,' did, in 'Snark' there is 'none of the triumphant joy of the earlier ballad, since the hunt ends this time in failure,' as eventually adults must acknowledge that all lives end in death. Carroll was reminded of this physical fact daily; despite his faith, he was facing the unknown of this final transition, and wrote it out metaphorically in this poem. The author tried to face this with his former exuberance, but knew he was dancing against the coming darkness." Sowers has written her eNotations with several different audiences in mind: "A young reader might just read through the main text and look at the pictures, while a slightly older reader might read the definitions as well: so much of the ...

Amen.

Ten Days in a Mad-House, describing New York City's most notorious mental institution, were written by journalist Nellie Bly in 1887. It was no mere armchair observation, because Bly got herself committed to Blackwell's and wrote a shocking exposé called Ten Days In A Madhouse. The series of articles became a best-selling book, launching Bly's career as a world-famous investigative reporter and also helping bring reform to the asylum.

Poésies (French Edition) by Isidore Lucien Ducasse (Comte De Lautréamont) (Bibebook) 4.4 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

La maîtresse (French Edition) by Jules Renard (Bibebook) 3.6 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Jack Slater: Orphan Train to Cattle Baron by Johnny Gunn (Wolfpack Publishing) 4.5 Stars (1,343 Review)    Price verified 4 hours ago

In the fall of 1872, following a buggy mishap that killed his parents, Jack Slater, ten years old, was flung to the streets of New York City, among thousands of misplaced, orphaned, or runaway children. He was saved by the Children's Aid Society that placed orphaned children with families on the frontier. These families welcomed the children and most found loving homes. Some grew up to become industrial, political, or community leaders. Slater did not find a loving home. Instead, he found himself at Pete Jablonski's farm in Fargo, Dakota Territory where abuse was a daily dose of reality. When outlaws rob a local mine payroll and kill four men in the process, Slater makes a mortal enemy of the Elko County Sheriff that takes Slater's life is an unexpected direction.

Chiquenaude (French Edition) by Raymond Roussel (Bibebook) 2.8 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

»(The Era.

Le bacille (French Edition) by Arnould Galopin (Bibebook) 4.0 Stars (96 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

With Fire And Sword. Book I: The Uprising (Eastern Kingdom Series 1) by Henryk Sienkiewicz (apebook) 4.4 Stars (141 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

The main character of the book, the young nobleman Jan Skrzetuski, or Pan Jan for short, is caught in the middle of the beginning Cossack uprising under the legendary Bogdan Chmelnitzky. Along the way he also falls in love with the beautiful princess Helena, who is also desired by a Cossack officer. In the course of the book the conflict begins to take serious forms, Pan Jan meets most of the main characters on his travels and missions through Eastern Europe. Personal rivalries, chases on horseback, duels, drinking bouts, epic dialogues and great battles (which no normal European has ever heard of before) are also part of the book. As a reader, you live the tragic story of the kingdom, which in the end is destroyed by internal conflicts. This civil war, by the way, caused several million deaths - when reading the book it becomes clear why. Maybe it is necessary to warn potential readers that 17th century warfare in this region was extremely brutal and unless you can tolerate occasional descriptions of horrifying activities, perhaps you should not choose this novel. In the course of prosecuting this revolution or attempting to put it down local villages and Manor homes will be torched. There will be stories of widespread use of violence including the use of stakes, fire and torture to murder populations. Both sides will overindulge in the spilling of innocent blood. But if you can stand that you will be benefitted with excellent characterizations, an exceptionally tense and well-plotted love story intertwined with the basic plot. "The Uprising" is the first book of the epic trilogy WITH FIRE AND SWORD by Nobel Prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz. It deals with the uprising of the Cossacks against the Poles in 1648. It is a world forgotten in Central Europe, which was ruled by a kingdom in personal union (Poland-Lithuania). The size of this first part of the first trilogy of The EASTERN KINGDOM Series is about 300 pages.

I put it off and decide to do it later, to ask for her help after we get to know each other better. The eNotated Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll 4.4 Stars (38 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Though most ebooks are simple conversions of paper books, "The eNotated Alice in Wonderland" is a completely new approach that takes advantage of ebook technology by providing comprehensive eNotations (electronic annotations), essays, and background information conveniently accessible through links and a active table of contents. Written by Pam Sowers, researcher, journalist, and long-time "Alice" fan, this background biographical, historical, and interpretive information reveals an "Alice" not visible to most readers. Says Sowers, "This book is for adults as well as children. 'Alice in Wonderland' is not simply a sweet children's story set in dreamland. It is much more complex. Themes include death, racism, politics, anger, confusion, logic and women's roles. Carroll wrote in a world controlled by Victorian sensibilities." One hundred fifty years ago, Charles Dodgson, joined a party boating from Oxford to Godstow that included three little girls, Alice Liddell and her sisters. In charge of entertainment, Dodgson told the girls a story that with Alice's encouragement became "Alice in Wonderland," published three years later under the pen name Lewis Carroll. Immediately popular and published in hundreds of variously illustrated editions reaching millions of readers over generations, "Alice" has over time become less accessible than it was to Carroll's Victorian contemporaries. Sowers's eNotations supply the tacit background Alice knew but we don't, revealing the humor, insight, and fun of this many-layered complex book. This eNotated Classics sesquicentennial edition of "Alice" contains more than 90 illustrations, most in color, from the most beloved editions of Alice as well as more than 360 eNotations, an introduction, two fascinating essays, an extensive bibliography, and a chronology showing where Carroll and "Alice" fit in their times. If you read Alice as a child, you'll be amazed on reading the eNotated edition how much you missed and can now ...

The Holy War (Updated, Illustrated): Made by Shaddai upon Diabolus for the Regaining of the Metropolis of the World (Bunyan Updated Classics Book 2) by John Bunyan (Aneko Press) 4.7 Stars (716 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

More than 100 Original Illustrations Bonus Content: The Life of John Bunyan, by William Brock For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the lords of this age, rulers of this darkness, against spiritual wickedness in the heavens. (Ephesians 6:12) What if you were able to see your life from a spiritual perspective and see the actual reality of the verse above? How does our enemy, Diabolus, plan and carry out his attacks? How do his demons help, and what are their objectives? Why and how must we petition Emmanuel to get His attention and help in this great, holy war? Written four years after The Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan followed up with this second allegorical classic, which has touched hearts and minds of readers for generations. The epicenter of this book is the town of Mansoul, its people (such as Conscience, Self-Denial, and Do-Right), and its gates (Eye-gate, Ear-gate, Mouth-gate, Nose-gate, and Feel-gate). The attack by Diabolus and his demons, all of whom have appropriate names, is carefully planned and executed. As still happens to men today, Mansoul fell hard. Emmanuel is of course willing to help, but can only do so on special, seemingly strict terms. As you watch this intense battle unfold, you'll be emboldened to fight with new vigilance, to guard the gates with tenacity, and to rely on Emmanuel's sovereignty like never before. It should be noted that John Bunyan focused not so much on biblical sequence or even perfect accuracy in every aspect. Instead, he honed in specifically on the spiritual battle being waged for each individual soul, filling in other details as needed to create the scenes. In this edition, we updated the text to clarify the meaning of each scene and inserted Bible verses in key areas to bring to light the depth and spiritual meaning of this powerful allegory. About the Author John Bunyan was born in November 1628, in Elstow, England. A celebrated English minister and ...

Joseph Conrad's 1904 adventure novel, set amid the mist-covered mountains of a fictional South American republic, spins a colorful tale of capitalist exploitation and rebellion.
