The Inca Empire: An Enthralling Overview of the Incas, Their Civilization in Ancient Peru, and the Spanish Conquest (Mesoamerica) by Billy Wellman 4.1 Stars (56 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Did you know that the Incas worshiped the mummies of their emperors? For the Incas, death didn't exist; it simply took the dead to a different plane of life. So, the mummies of their emperors were treated as people; they were given food and drink and even visited each other ceremoniously. They also owned country estates, which generated enough profits to keep them in the style to which they were accustomed. This might sound like a curiosity, but this form of ancestor worship was central to the Inca culture and to the history of the Inca Empire, which stretched from Ecuador and Colombia in the north to Chile in the south. Everyone has seen pictures of one of the Incas' greatest achievements: the mountain-top wonder of Machu Picchu. But Inca history has always been told by the Spanish colonizers who conquered them since the Inca had no formal writing. Now, archaeology is giving us more information on how the Inca really lived, helping us differentiate real history from myth and propaganda. In this book, you will discover how the Inca created an expansive empire in just a century and why that civilization crumbled so fast once the Spanish arrived. You'll also discover the following: • How the Inca civilization developed out of a number of preceding cultures in the Andes and Peruvian coast; • How quickly the Incas were able to expand and why they needed to; • How the empire was administered and how runners were able to take messages from one end of it to the other with remarkable speed; • The amazing Inca infrastructure program, which included building roads through mountain ranges and across raging rivers; • Why Inca cuisine included tasty guinea pigs and llama jerky; • Why there were never more than a few thousand actual Inca in the Inca Empire; • The religion and beliefs of the Inca and how they developed over time to support the empire's mission; • How just a couple of hundred Spanish adventurers managed to conquer and subdue the Inca ...

Trail of Tears: An Enthralling Guide to the Choctaw and Chickasaw Removal, the Seminole Wars, Creek Dissolution, and Forced Relocation of the ... by Billy Wellman 4.4 Stars (120 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The removal of the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River during the 1800s to clear the way for settlers is a tragic story that involves human suffering on a grand scale. The policy of Manifest Destiny said America was a morally superior nation that had the right to build an empire from the East Coast to the West Coast, much to the detriment of the Native Americans who stood in the way. This book will document the Trail of Tears, bringing to light many events that occurred in the background while describing a few prominent Native American chiefs, such as Seminole Chief Abiaka and Cherokee Chief John Ross, and some of the European-Americans with whom they clashed. We will also go beyond standard history and take a closer look at the assimilation that occurred between the white settlers and the Native Americans. The unique characteristics of the tribes that met the Spanish settlers who arrived in Florida and the other European settlers who arrived on the East Coast are often not fully realized. We will take a closer look at this blending of cultures to give you a clearer picture of what the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminoles were like by the time of the Trail of Tears. Here are just some of the things you will discover in this book: • Why tribes developed various forms of Christianity • The reasons behind chiefs signing treaties to give away native lands • George Washington's views on the Native Americans • The Five Civilized Tribes and how they differed from each other • How the average person viewed Native Americans in the 19th century • Davey Crockett's opinion on the relocation of Native Americans • The Indian Removal Act of 1830 and how it impacted the Trail of Tears • And so much more! The Reformation: A Captivating Guide to the Religious Revolution Sparked by Martin Luther and Its Impact on Christianity and the Western Church ... by Captivating History 4.5 Stars (176 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Reformation and why it occurred, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Most of us have probably heard the story of how a German monk named Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of a church. These Ninety-five Theses were essentially ninety-five complaints lodged against the Catholic Church. In those days, the Catholic Church was the big guy on the block when it came to religion. Those who dared question Catholic doctrine were inevitably said to be in error, and if they did not immediately correct their "errors," they would be labeled heretics. And it wasn't that good to be a heretic in those days since it usually meant a one-way ticket to getting burned at the stake. The Catholic Church had kept its solid grip on church dogma for well over a thousand years, yet Martin Luther dared to stand up and raise his voice in objection. Martin Luther not only managed to survive his stab at religious dissidence but also sparked a larger movement in which many more people began to protest what they perceived as abuses of the Catholic Church. More commonly known as Protestants, these reformers came from all walks of life yet had one thing in common -- they wanted to read the Scriptures for themselves and draw their own interpretation. This book follows the initial outburst of reformatory thought, first carried forth by Martin Luther and other primary reformers, and then goes on to follow the life and work of notable Protestants such as John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli. These bold reformers dared to question the status quo, and they forever changed the world with their protestations. This is the history of the Reformation. In this book, you will discover: • The causes of the Reformation • The key participants • The conflicts that occurred • The religious groups that were formed • And more Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the Reformation, scroll up and click ...

If you want to learn about the Soviet Union and Eastern Front during World War 2, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! No nation suffered more losses during the Second World War than the Soviet Union. The figure most historians recognize as roughly accurate is twenty million. The exact figure is impossible to tally for a number of reasons: destroyed records, inexact pre-war records, Soviet politicization of the population figures before and after the war, and much more. No matter what the exact total was, what is known is that the Soviet population only recovered its losses from the war in the late 1950s. For those of you unfamiliar with WWII, the combined losses sustained by the United States and Great Britain were just over 800,000 dead. The Soviets lost that many people during the Siege of Leningrad alone. In Soviet Union in World War 2: A Captivating Guide to Life in the Soviet Union and Some of the Main Events on the Eastern Front Such as the Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Kursk, and Siege of Leningrad, you will discover topics such as: • Before the War • Stalinism • 1938 and 1939 • Interlude • Barbarossa • War of Extermination • The Major Battles • And much, much more! The Punic Wars: A Captivating Guide to the First, Second, and Third Punic Wars Between Rome and Carthage, Including the Rise and Fall of Hannibal ... by Captivating History 4.2 Stars (146 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Punic Wars, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The Punic Wars between 264 BCE and 146 BCE were a series of wars fought between the armies of ancient Carthage and Rome. In the years before the battles broke out, Carthage had risen from a small port community to the Mediterranean region's richest and most powerful city. Carthage had a powerful navy, a mercenary army, and ample resources to act as an authority in trade and politics. As such, Carthage prohibited Roman trade in the Western Mediterranean through an agreement with what was then just a small city called Rome. Without an organized military, Rome had little choice but to abide by the treaty. As history shows, however, Rome didn't stay small and insignificant for long. As its size and power grew, so too did Rome's desire to fight back against its Carthaginian oppressors: so followed the three Punic Wars. At the start of the conflict, Carthage dominated the Mediterranean. By the end of the wars, Rome had not only conquered Carthage but become the strongest society in the Western Mediterranean. It was a formative period for the Roman Republic and one that would eventually lead Rome to form its own empire. In The Punic Wars: A Captivating Guide to the First, Second, and Third Punic Wars Between Rome and Carthage, Including the Rise and Fall of Hannibal Barca, you will discover topics such as • Never before told story of what the Punic Wars were all about, where it was fought, and the major events surrounding the historical war • Full account of the epic battles fought during the three wars that spanned over 118 years • The outcome of the many years of warfare between the two major powers, Carthage and Rome • And much, much more! The Rape of Nanking: The Nanjing Massacre That Occurred during the Second Sino-Japanese War (Asian Military History) by Captivating History 4.3 Stars (158 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

If you want to discover the history of the Rape of Nanking, then keep reading... Between December 13th, 1937, and the beginning of February 1938, Japanese soldiers entered the Chinese city of Nanjing following a very brief fight for the city. For over six weeks, they committed some of the worst atrocities, first against the Chinese soldiers after they surrendered, then against the civilians. The Westerners who did not flee from the city prior to the Japanese arrival set up a safety zone in the weeks leading up to the Imperial Army entering the city. This was the only place where there was relative safety, and many of the Chinese citizens tried to find refuge there. While Japanese soldiers did enter the safety zone to remove citizens, their actions and behavior in the rest of the city were far worse. The primary war crimes for which they would eventually be charged were rape, looting, arson, and the execution of soldiers and civilians. In less than two months, they killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese people and destroyed roughly a third of the buildings within the city. After World War II ended, the commanders and officers would be put on trial for the atrocities that had been committed, with many of them being condemned by documentation that emerged after the fighting had stopped. In the years since the tribunal and conviction, memorials have been built to honor those who died during those few weeks between 1937 and 1938. In this book, you'll learn about the following: • A brief history of the historically important Chinese city of Nanjing • The Japanese invasion of China • The Marco Polo Bridge Incident • The Battle of Shanghai • The march to Nanjing • The establishment of the Safety Zone • Western perception and reaction to the massacre • The war crimes committed in Nanjing • The Far East Tribunal • And much more! For archaeologists, historians, tourists, scholars, fans of mythology, and students of the ancient world, the Minoans are this broken puzzle. The Minoans were an ancient civilization that built their settlements on islands in the Aegean Sea. They lived almost 5,000 years ago and left behind traces of their lives but not enough for people to create a complete picture. Ever since the early 20th century, the Minoans have been a subject of interest thanks to the discoveries and excavations by Sir Arthur Evans, a British archaeologist who found the first Minoan ruins and named them after the mythological King Minos and his Minotaur. Evans was able to gain almost sole access to the lands of the Cretan government for excavation by paying for it with funds generated by his supporters in 1900. He and his crew unearthed the massive palace complex of Knossos, one of the most famous archaeological excavation sites in history. From the work of Evans and others, the puzzle of the Minoans has slowly gained more pieces. Through the study of material culture, modern audiences now know quite a bit about artistic techniques, favorite subjects, fashion, daily life, gender roles, and who the Minoans traded with. An observer can tell that the Minoans were a seafaring mercantile civilization, that they built magnificent urban centers, and that they had a form of proto-writing. In Minoans: A Captivating Guide to an Essential Bronze Age Society in Ancient Greece Called the Minoan Civilization, you will discover topics such as: • Where and When Did the Minoans Live? • Known History of the Minoans ...

The Greco-Persian Wars: A Captivating Guide to the Conflicts Between the Achaemenid Empire and the Greek City-States, Including the Battle of ... by Captivating History 4.3 Stars (68 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Greco-Persian Wars, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! This cultural prominence was on full display during these wars, for the Greco-Persian Wars were documented by Herodotus, who is often said to be the father of modern history. His carefully detailed events inspired people like Thucydides to write his own history of the Peloponnesian War. These writers, although limited in terms of the sources available to them, were able to carefully document all of the events both during and after the war, and their versions of the story have been verified time and time again by various historians, helping enshrine these works as some of the most important in human history. Because of the work of Herodotus, we know that the conflict that eventually became the Greco-Persian Wars began along the coast of the modern nation of Turkey in a region known as Ionia. In this region, twelve Greek city-states, which had been free and independent since their founding, had recently been subjugated by the Kingdom of Lydia, which was shortly thereafter conquered by Persia. So, when the tyrant king Aristagoras called for the people of Ionia to revolt against the Persians in 499 BCE, the Ionian Greeks responded. Athens and Eritrea rushed in to support their besieged countrymen, and the Greco-Persian Wars were under way. In other words, the Greco-Persian Wars are often portrayed as a battle between good and evil. This is simultaneously an exaggeration and an oversimplification, but there is no doubt that this war, or series of wars, fought between some of the most powerful civilizations of the ancient era helped to plot the course of human history that we have been following up until this very day. In The Greco-Persian Wars: A Captivating Guide to the Conflicts Between the Achaemenid Empire and the Greek City-States, Including the Battle of Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, Plataea, and More, you will discover topics ...

After all, it was due to Grant's actions that the Battles of Shiloh and Vicksburg were won. And it was through Grant that the final terms of the Confederacy's surrender were signed. That is pretty good for a military man who actually dropped out of the military! Yes, prior to the war, Grant quit the life of a military man in favor of living on a farm with his young family. Yet, even though he tried to take a detour in life, he could not escape his fate. And he found himself back in the army just in time to lead the nation through the worst and most divisive war it had ever seen. After the war, he once again rose to prominence to become the eighteenth president of the United States. From his perch in DC, he oversaw the reconstruction of the South and championed the Civil Rights Act of 1875. However, for all the good that he did, some of his less noble associates managed to get him embroiled in controversy with their corrupt dealings. The History of the United States: A Captivating Guide to American History, Including Events Such as the American Revolution, French and Indian War, ... by Captivating History 4.3 Stars (429 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the United States, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! When the first settlers reached the United States of America and started to chip out a living in the wilderness that seemed so fierce and unfamiliar to their European eyes, they could never have dreamed that someday the land upon which they stood would become one of the most powerful countries in the entire world. When Native Americans first witnessed those white sails bringing ships with white sailors into their world for the first time, they could never have dreamed that within a few centuries their population would be all but destroyed, that they would have to endure massacre after massacre, be stripped of their freedom and confined to comparatively tiny reservations, and walk the Trail of Tears within the next few hundred years. When the preachers of the Great Awakening stood on the backs of wagons or bits of old tree stumps and told the American people a new story of individual freedom and the power of ordinary people, they could never have dreamed that their preaching would trigger a landslide of abolitionism that would end in a civil war that almost tore the entire country apart. When the Civil War was finally won by the Union, and all African Americans' chains were broken at last, the military leaders could never have dreamed that within the next half century, the United States would emerge as one of the world's greatest military powers during the Spanish-American War. And when those soldiers won the struggle against Spain in Cuba, they could never have dreamed that later in the century, Cuba itself would turn against them and become the single greatest threat of nuclear annihilation during the Cold War. When the Wright Brothers first took to the air and Thomas Edison made the lightbulb, they could never have dreamed that American innovation would produce not only the Ford car, basketball, the telephone, and Facebook, but it ...

The Etruscans: A Captivating Guide to the Etruscan Civilization of Ancient Italy That Preceded the Roman Republic (Forgotten Civilizations) by Captivating History 4.0 Stars (127 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Etruscans, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The importance of the Etruscans can be traced back to Rome. The Roman Republic, and later the Roman Empire, was an unusual conqueror because it would absorb and assimilate elements of the cultures it dominated. A standing practice was to allow the defeated to continue practicing their culture and religion so long as they paid their taxes on time. Such a procedure was part of why Christianity would seep into the Roman Empire around the 1st century CE, for example. For the Etruscans, this meant they influenced aspects of Roman civilization, one of the most powerful cultures in the history of the Western world. The word "Rome" is Etruscan in origin as are the names of its mythological founders "Remus" and "Romulus." Several of the Roman creation myths centered on branches of the Etruscans breaking off to found Rome, and Rome itself used to be a part of Etruscan civilization before it broke away and started to develop its own society. When the Etruscans were absorbed, elements of their culture, language, and religion would seep into Roman practice. Before their assimilation, the Etruscans gifted Rome with much of its political science and technology. Through the Etruscans, the Romans developed monarchy, walls, drainage systems, and the powerful forum. The Etruscans shouldn't only be studied as the influencer of Rome, but it is the connection through which most individuals have heard of their illustrious civilization. Other interesting developments of the Etruscans were their flamboyant fashion, complex political structure, urban planning, and fatalistic religion. As the reader of this volume, check and see where the Etruscans sound similar to the Romans but also interpret what made the Etruscans unique, what rings of assimilation of other cultures like the Greeks, and determine whether it was possible for the Etruscans to avoid their fate against ...

Art, architecture, tragedies, comedies, philosophy, athletic competitions, and religious ceremonies became recognizable staples of Greeks as citizens of their highly developed poleis. And although Greece was able to develop its culture during this period, its territory was ravaged by many conflicts. They started as an uprising to bring down tyrants and oligarchs and as a defensive effort to fend off the Persian Empire. With aspirations to add Greece to its multi-ethnic empire, the Persian kings constantly attacked, prompting Greece to unite. But once the threat of conquest passed, the Greeks turned against each other and fought wars to determine which polis should become the predominant one. Read the History of Classical Greece, and learn how an ancient civilization reshaped itself into a democratic society. Discover how Philip II and his son, Alexander the Great, united the whole Greek world into one force able to explore vast territories to the east, all the way to India. The Reconstruction Era: A Captivating Guide to a Period in the History of the United States of America That Greatly Impacted American Civil Rights ... by Captivating History 4.5 Stars (98 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

Are you curious to learn what happened after the US Civil War? Then dive into the captivating history of the Reconstruction Era! Free History BONUS Inside! The US Civil War brought about a lot of change. The nation not only had to figure out how to become united once again, but it also had to figure out how to integrate the newly freed slaves into society. In addition, the country had to figure out how to recover from the war, which devastated the South and took many lives on both sides. President Abraham Lincoln favored a less punitive plan for reinstating the Confederate states back into the Union. Unlike other Republicans at the time, he did not think of these states as ever having left the Union. However, his plan never came to fruition. His assassination left the Reconstruction efforts in the hands of Andrew Johnson, a Democrat. Johnson wanted to make things easier for his fellow Democrats in the South. Knowing this, the Radical Republicans in Congress passed their own laws, overrode Johnson's vetoes, and eventually impeached him. Their plan for the South was punitive and harsh, as they expected total loyalty from any state wishing to rejoin the Union. It is partially due to these harsh measures that the South enacted the Black Codes, which were harsh laws that stripped away civil liberties for African Americans. The racial tension and hostile atmosphere in the South, which were directed toward both blacks and sympathetic whites, gave birth to the Ku Klux Klan and the infamous Jim Crow laws. Congress attempted to counter these moves with the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, but these were never utilized in the way they had imagined. In this book, you will learn about the significant players and laws. You will read about the carpetbaggers and scallywags who tried to make things better for blacks in the South while also seeking their own fortune. And perhaps most importantly, you will discover what happened to the freed slaves and ...

Constantine the Great: A Captivating Guide to the First Christian Roman Emperor and How He Ruled the Roman Empire (Roman Emperors) by Captivating History 4.1 Stars (113 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating life of Constantine the Great, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Constantine the Great is a complex figure surrounded by controversies and contradictions. The sources history left for us to read are often biased one way or the other as he is the first Christian Roman emperor. His own propaganda paints a bright picture of his actions and his personality, while on the other side, we have his political enemies who paint him in much darker colors. All of the sources available to us are either fully supporting Constantine or are strictly against him. There is no objective work that will give us any true insight on how Constantine lived, what he was thinking, and what his true motives were. In truth, contemporary historians served the purpose of writing what the people wanted to hear. They followed the latest political and cultural trends, and they did not care too much about objectivism and truth. The questions like what sort of a man was Constantine and what exactly did he achieve during his reign are still baffling historians. History of Virginia: A Captivating Guide to the History of the Mother of States, Starting from Jamestown through the American Revolution and the ... by Captivating History 4.2 Stars (132 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of Virginia, then keep reading... From being the home of some of the first people in America to being the birthplace of the United States, Virginia has had an incredibly rich and interesting history even before its inauguration as a state. Virginia was once the most populous and affluent state in the country and the birthplace of many of the most important figures in early United States' history. Yet, despite Virginia's successes and great heritage, it has, for much of history, been a divided state that has found itself debating even the most basic rights and issues. This, of course, is no more obvious than the splitting of Virginia into Virginia and West Virginia in the years following the American Civil War. For all the generational Virginians who take pride in every aspect of their state's legacy, there are newcomers who arrive to work for the Pentagon, the CIA, and the other important government and military hubs in Virginia who do not look so fondly on Virginia's history. Yet, regardless of how right or politically correct Virginia's history may appear, it is incredibly interesting for all those wondering how this southern US state became the way it is today. In this book, you will discover: • Virginia's first people and their complex cultural, social, economic, spiritual and political systems and traditions • The colonization of America and the United States' first settlement in Jamestown, Virginia • Interactions between the state's first settlement and first people • Virginia's culture under colonial rule • Virginia's journey towards developing its own culture, economy and political system, separate from that of England, mostly surrounding the culture of tobacco farming • The state's involvement in the American Revolution and the years post war • Virginia's involvement in the American Civil War and the effects of the war on the state • The state's many social movements • ...

Mansa Musa: A Captivating Guide to the Emperor of the Islamic Mali Empire in West Africa and How He Developed Timbuktu into a Major Center for Trade ... by Captivating History 4.3 Stars (70 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Who was Mansa Musa? And why was he important? Free History BONUS Inside! In the grand scheme of things, very little is known of Mansa Musa's life. We know that he was one of the greatest emperors of the Mali Empire. And we know that he was actually one of the richest men of all time due to the enormous gold deposits in West Africa that were under his dominion, but large parts of Mansa Musa's life remain a mystery. We know, for example, that he later expanded the reach of the Mali Empire considerably, eventually incorporating the legendary Timbuktu into his realm. Such things certainly make for fascinating tales, but the truth is much of Mansa Musa's early life is virtually unknown. This is largely due to the fact that Mansa Musa did not have a biography of his exploits written about him during the time in which he lived. Rather than a written record, the narrative of his exploits that are remembered come down to us through the lore of the griot -- Mali's oral storytellers. The tales that these bards spin are indeed riveting, but they tend to focus on certain key events in Mansa Musa's later life. The epic journey of Mansa's hajj to Mecca is covered, and so are some other key parts of his personal history. But many other aspects still draw a blank. Here in this text, however, we have really run the gamut when it comes to uncovering the life of Mansa Musa. Utilizing both the testimony of Arab chroniclers familiar with Mali and Mansa Musa, the oral stories of the griot, and archaeological evidence, we have put together a book that captures the essence of who Mansa Musa was and what he tried to accomplish. His story is like some great mosaic that has fractured over the centuries, but we have pieced it all together to present to you the best portrait possible of Mansa Musa and the life he lived. In this book, you will learn about: • The backstory of the Mali Empire and its founders • The rise of Mansa Musa as the emperor • The transition of ...

American Military History: A Captivating Guide to Events and Facts You Should Know About Armed Conflicts Involving the United States (U.S. History) by Captivating History 4.0 Stars (83 Reviews)    Price verified 39 minutes ago

Americans generally show great respect for their troops, and rightfully so. But what is the history of the US Armed Forces? How did the American military come about? The answers to these questions might not be quite as straightforward as you might think. The American military industrial complex, as one former president once called it, was not always so streamlined and efficient. It began more or less as a ragtag bunch of colonialists and revolutionaries who struggled with some of the most fundamental concepts of military discipline. Nevertheless, this ragtag group ultimately shook off the yoke of the British Empire and forged an independent nation. In this book, we take a look at America's military might from its inception to the present day. We explore the beginnings of both pre- and post-revolutionary America, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the world wars, the wars in Korea and Vietnam, the War on Terror, and more. The American military is still considered a force to be reckoned with, and its story is one that continues to be written about. In this book, you will learn about the following: • The interesting origin of the US Armed Forces • The participation of American militias in the Revolutionary War • Armed conflict during the Civil War • America's participation in the world wars • How America was involved in the Cold War conflict • The War on Terror and how it influenced world politics • How American's military advanced throughout the years • And much more! If you want to discover the captivating history of the Treaty of Versailles, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The treaty that ended the First World War, also known as the "war to end all wars," was signed at the Palace of Versailles, which had been the home of French kings until 1789 and remains one of the most beautiful structures in the world. Though the men of Versailles (and they were overwhelmingly men) had arrived in Paris to put an end to World War I, by the time the conference ended, the main goal of the diplomats and national leaders had turned into ending wars for all time. Obviously, that did not work, and as a matter of fact, the end result of the Paris Peace Conference -- the Treaty of Versailles -- would likely cause more wars than any of its authors could have possibly dreamed of, including World War II. In The Treaty of Versailles: A Captivating Guide to the Peace Treaty That Ended World War 1 and Its Impact on Germany and the Rise of Adolf Hitler, you will discover topics such as • Foundations • What Came Before • The Truce and the Run-Up to Versailles • The Allies • The Fourteen Points • The Scrambled Map and People of Europe • The Middle East • Germany • The "Stab-in-the-Back" Myth • The League of Nations Fiasco • And much, much more! If you want to discover the captivating history of The Battle of the Somme, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The First World War was made up of many different battles, each brutal, bloody, and devastating in its own unique way. Every battle had its victories and losses, successes and failures. There were individual heroes on both sides and heroic actions by whole brigades. There were men who fought to the bitter end and died in the muddy fields of France, their bodies never recovered, and their final resting places left unmarked for more than a century. But as time moves on and the First World War fades from living memory, many of these battles are no longer viewed as single events but rather as parts of the whole, a linear progression in a greater story. The Battle of the Somme was a significant battle for all those who took part, but it was especially important for the British because it was the first time in World War One that they were forced to shoulder the main responsibility for an offensive, and they did not have enough time to fully prepare for the assault. But it is not just the military significance of the campaign that is important to the British; the Battle of the Somme lives on in the collective memory of the British nation, not only because of the unimaginable devastation and casualties suffered by the British Army in one single day, but also because of the effect that it had on the British national psyche. Whole villages lost a generation of young men on the banks of the River Somme, and families were torn apart as brothers fell side by side in the muddy fields of France. The Battle of the Somme was an unbelievable tragedy for the British nation. In The Battle of the Somme: A Captivating Guide to One of the Most Devastating Events of the First World War That Took Place on the Western Front, you will discover topics such as • The Road to the Somme • The Significance of Verdun • The Battle of the Somme Begins • Z ...

Did you know that the Balkans is home to some of the oldest cities in the world? Many have heard the term "Balkans" tossed about but likely don't know a whole lot about the region. The saga of the Balkans is profound yet incredibly complicated. Bordered by both the Balkan Mountains of southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea, this region holds a strong place in the history of Western civilization and is also a major crossroads of Eastern civilization as well. The Balkans have been the stomping grounds of both Byzantine emperors and Ottoman sultans. And both Christianity and Islam call this place home. On June 22nd, 1941, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. In the time since the end of the war, the world has become familiar with the number of deaths sustained by the Soviet Union (also known as the USSR) during the conflict -- twenty-million. And that's likely low, given the size of the country, census taking at the time, and the damage done to the bureaucracy of the country. Adolf Hitler invaded the Soviet Union with over three million men. The Soviets had just under that number in the western section of their country to meet them, as well as millions more elsewhere, which was something Hitler did not count on and grossly underestimated. The struggle between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany was one of the largest and deadliest conflicts of all time, a war of elimination between totalitarian nations led by two of the most ruthless leaders in the history of the world. Explore the Captivating History of the Industrial Revolution Free History BONUS Inside! For most of human existence, people lived in a somewhat similar fashion. Everything that has been produced, from food and raw materials to clothing and other finished products, has been done either solely by hand or with some help of animal power. This was the same across the eras and throughout the world, no matter how advanced or backward the various civilizations were. Yet our lives today couldn't be more different. Most of our products are made by machines and mechanical power, allowing for greater productivity and a higher quality of life in general. That advance was made possible by what we today call the Industrial Revolution. Its start in the mid-18th century signalized a slow but unwavering transformation from a handmade manufacturing civilization to a machine-powered industrial society. It is hard to overestimate how important and impactful this event was. The effects of the Industrial Revolution touched and changed pretty much every aspect of our lives. It not only transformed the technology and production of the entire humankind, but it also ushered social changes, both in class and gender, as well as in demographics and economic advances. At the same time, it was powered by and powering scientific and engineering breakthroughs. The Industrial Revolution was also an essential step in transforming the world into a global village, as it brought significant progress in means of transportation and communication. All that affected how wars were fought, how people lived and died, what kind of art they made, and how they spent their everyday lives. Not only was this change qualitative, but it was also quantitative, as unlike earlier historical events, the Industrial Revolution wasn't limited to a single part of the world. Its effects spread across the globe, affecting almost all of humankind to an extent unseen before. Because of that, it could be argued that the ...

The Dutch East India Company: A Captivating Guide to the First True Multinational Corporation and Its Impact on the Dutch War of Independence from ... by Captivating History 3.9 Stars (162 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Dutch East India Company, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Huge international companies and corporations are a normal part of our everyday lives today. For most, their unimaginable wealth and power, which are rivaling even some of the smaller countries of the world, is something we take for granted. And we see them as the living embodiment of the capitalist system, regardless if we take it as a good or a bad omen. However, this wasn't always the case. For the majority of history, it was the kings and emperors who wielded the most influence, commanded the largest armies, and had the largest treasures. And all of them would laugh at the idea of some merchants managing to not only catch up to their supremacy and riches but even surpass them. Yet they did. Probably the best example of that kind of success were the traders of the Dutch East India Company of the 16th century. This company singlehandedly reformed the way businesses functioned, creating the foundation of our modern capitalist world, with all of its strengths and weaknesses. And through its international trade, this corporation brought our world one step closer to the colonialism of the 19th century and the globalization of the 20th century. It even managed to transform itself from a group of merchants to an empire in its own right. By the time of its disbandment in the late 18th century, the world was irreversibly changed. In The Dutch East India Company: A Captivating Guide to the First True Multinational Corporation and Its Impact on the Dutch War of Independence from Spain, you will discover topics such as • Birth of a Corporation • The Company on the Rise • Fall of the Giant • Structure and Organization of the VOC • The Good, the Bad, and the VOC • And much, much more! The Servile Wars: A Captivating Guide to the Three Slave Revolts Against the Roman Republic (Ancient Military History) by Captivating History 4.2 Stars (62 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Did you know that historians believe slaves constituted at least 20 percent of the Roman Republic's population? In ancient Rome, the use of slave labor in all levels of society was a part of the natural order. Eventually, like with any other empire, these less fortunate individuals, who found themselves with fewer rights than even livestock, would find the courage to stand up and fight for freedom against their all-powerful masters. These revolts would turn into all-out wars and go down in the annals of time as the Servile Wars. The men and generals that fought in these conflicts would find their names forever written in the tomes of history. Some would be immortalized as heroes who stood up against tyranny, and others would be villainized. But no one could argue that these uprisings were the catalysts for change. In this book, you will learn about: • Slavery in ancient Rome • How Sicily was a hotbed for slave rebellions • How Spartacus brought southern Italy to its knees • The life of a gladiator • How the slave revolts changed the Roman Republic • Why the Roman Colosseum was built • How the gladiator games were carried out • And so much more! The Russian Empire: A Captivating Guide to the Third-Largest Empire in History, Starting from Peter the Great to the Russian Revolution (Exploring ... by Captivating History 4.1 Stars (227 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

What happened to Imperial Russia? Russia has long been a powerful country. Even today, Russia stands as one of the great powers on the planet. But modern-day Russia is just a vestige of the greater territory that once constituted Imperial Russia. The Russian Empire spanned continents, and at one time, Imperial Russia could claim territory from Alaska to Poland and just about everything else in between. Russian rulers felt that they were the inheritors of the Roman Byzantine Empire, and like the Caesars of old, they stylized themselves as "tsars." These tsars ruled as absolute autocrats, directing the empire through the sheer force of their own willpower. However, despite its size and power, the Russian Empire was often plagued with massive internal problems. An entire class of Russian peasants known as serfs, for example, were basically enslaved to the land they toiled on, unable to escape their lot in life. For much of the empire, the average Russian's feelings were ignored by the tsar and the elite, but in the latter years of Imperial Russia, these unresolved problems would come back with a vengeance. For the Russian Empire was not extinguished by an outside foe but rather collapsed from within. This book follows the rise of this Russian juggernaut from its earliest formation to its ultimate demise. In this book, you will learn: • How the Russian Empire was founded • About the most important rulers of the Russian Empire • Of the major wars fought on behalf of Imperial Russia • About the revolutions that rocked the empire • And much more! The Roman Games: A Captivating Guide to the Gladiators, Chariot Races, and Games in Ancient Rome (The Ancient Romans) by Captivating History 4.1 Stars (127 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

If you want to discover the history of the Roman Games, then keep reading... What were the Roman games? What was it like for gladiators in the arenas of ancient Rome? How thrilling was it to see chariot races on the Roman race track? Were the condemned really thrown to lions at the Circus Maximus? These are a few of the questions that will be explored in this book. The Romans were known for their extensive civilization, but at the heart of Roman power was a penchant for the Roman games. Immense money and resources were spent constructing circuses, stadiums, and amphitheaters, all in an effort to create incredible spectacles for the Roman masses. It was said that as long as Roman citizens had "bread and circuses," they would remain content. The Roman people became so absorbed in the Roman games, in fact, that many other vital aspects of Roman society began to deteriorate. This book explores the nature of the Roman games and their relationship with Roman religion, as well as political and military power. Interestingly enough, it has been said that the games stemmed from religious and funeral rites that used spectacles to appease both the Roman gods and the spirits of the dead. The Roman games were held many centuries ago, yet they still captivate us today. Here in this book, we will explore them in full. You will learn: • The origin of the Roman games • How the Roman games were connected to Roman religion and politics • The nature of gladiatorial combat • Chariot races and those who dared to enter these dangerous contests • Beast hunts in the ring • Roman theater in the arena • And more! The Hellenistic Age: A Captivating Guide to an Era of Mediterranean History That Took Place Between the Death of Alexander the Great and the Rise of ... by Captivating History 4.0 Stars (47 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Hellenistic Age, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! The alienation of the people from the government and society itself can be seen as a result of the Hellenistic transformation. It can also be seen within the art of the period. Scholars, artists, and philosophers began rejecting the collective ideals, and instead, they focused on the cult of the individual. Sculptures were no longer that of gods and ideals but of individuals, and philosophers cultivated the ideas of individual happiness and pleasure. Religious cults, such as the cult of Isis, formed around the same concepts, claiming to offer the secret of immortality and prosperity to those who sought it for themselves. The Hellenistic age brought a great deal of change in the ancient world. However, the era was destined to end in 31 BCE with the Battle of Actium. Octavian's Roman forces defeated Mark Antony's and Cleopatra's Ptolemaic fleet, thus securing the rise of the Roman Empire. While the Hellenistic age lasted only for a brief period in humanity's rich history, its influence on culture, science, and philosophy has resonated with the world ever since. If you want to discover the captivating history of the Scientific Revolution, then keep reading... Free History BONUS Inside! Ancient cultures have been looking up at the stars for thousands of years, wondering about their place in the universe. What were those glowing spots in the black cover of night? Just how far away was the moon? These and other questions hounded humanity through the millennia until, finally, relative economic stability allowed for a number of people to examine their world more closely. Slowly, knowledge and understanding accumulated generation by generation until the conditions were ideal enough for a revolution to occur in thinking, experimentation, worldview, and natural philosophy. The truly magnificent feature of this time period, besides, of course, the scientific discoveries themselves, was the kinship between philosophers, scientists, and experimental hobbyists throughout Europe. Hundreds, if not thousands, of letters between great intellectuals such as Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler, Robert Hooke, and Tycho Brahe have been preserved, demonstrating how these men (and a few women) worked in cooperation with one another in order to better their own research. In The Scientific Revolution: A Captivating Guide to the Emergence of Modern Science During the Early Modern Period, Including Stories of Thinkers Such as Isaac Newton and René Descartes, you will discover topics such as • Science: A Definition and Brief Prehistory • The Early Western Sciences • Paracelsus • Nicolaus Copernicus • Luigi Anguillara • Andreas Vesalius • Ignazio Danti • Tycho and Sophia Brahe • Paul Wittich • Sethus Calvisius • Joseph Goedenhuyze • ...
