Lessons from Famous Philosophers: A Crash Course on the Ideas of the Greatest Philosophers of All Time ~ (An Intro to Philosophy's Best Philosophers) by Nicolas Peterson 3.4 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

If you're looking for an easy-to-follow introduction of some of the greatest philosophers of all time (and their revolutionary ideas that changed the world), then this book is for you! Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or Kindle device. Philosophy comes from the Greek words philo (love of) and sophia (wisdom). It was -- and still is -- an attempt to understand as much as one can about the world, a holistic approach toward knowledge. It was only during the industrial revolution that we began to put scientists, researchers, and mechanics on one side, and philosophers on the other. In so doing, we placed a great divide between information associated with science and math, and the knowledge associated with experience, morality, conduct, and the spiritual world. We therefore have an unflattering view of today's philosophers, as many are considered religious nuts or morality freaks. But this is unfair. Since Philosophy is an attempt to create a rational understanding of the world, it still has immense practical value -- especially since there's still a lot we don't know. The greatest philosophers were those who challenged existing norms, and in so doing, changed the world. This book was written to help you get to know some of the great Greek philosophers who made the Western World what it is today. We'll begin with pre-Socratic philosophy, then move on to classical philosophy which continues to shape our modern world. This book will also explain how some of the great philosophers thought, so you can better understand the philosophical mindset and apply it in your own life. Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn... • Pre-Socratic Philosophy • Thales of Miletus (624-546 BC) • Pythagoras of Samos (582-496 BC) • Heraclitus of Ephesus (535-475 BC) • Classical Philosophy, the Socratic Period • Socrates (470/469-399 BC) • Atomism and The Cynics • Plato (428-348 BC) • Aristotle (384-322 BC) • Pyrrho of Elis (360-270 BC) • ...

The Four Powers: Assessments of Democracy, Abuses of Centralized Power, and Blockchain-Based National Security (Technodemocracy) by Jason M. Hanania (4powers.com) 4.9 Stars (27 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

What is power? How does it become centralized or decentralized? These questions are at the heart of understanding how governments work. Humankind has barely scratched the surface of what it takes to provide for democracy, equality, and reduced social risk. History has taught us that centralizing power in one group member creates maximum power inequality and typically results in abuse of power. Whether done consciously or unconsciously, that group member will inevitably make decisions that serve personal rather than public interests. It's human nature. In The Four Powers, Hanania provides a fast-paced historical assessment of centralized power. From World War I to crypto, Hanania explains the emerging trend toward technodemocracy: a decentralized system of governance whereby power-centralized institutions (such as churches, banks, political parties, campaign donors, Amazon, and the CIA) become obsolete. ABOUT THE AUTHOR From the author of Architecture of a Technodemocracy (2018), an Amazon bestseller for both U.S. politics and sociology, comes this eye-opening analysis of the human power structure. Jason M. Hanania is an attorney, an engineer, and a former U.S. government employee. INTRODUCTION An Equation for Power In 2016 I set out to write the book Architecture of a Technodemocracy. It documents a system for ending political party systems using technology and democracy. Before authoring that book, I searched far and wide for an institutional definition of democracy but found none. If you asked ten social scientists for a simple definition of democracy, you would get ten different responses. As an engineer, I found this frustrating. I wanted a more technical understanding of democracy, a mathematical framework to build on. The same way physical science provides equations for motion (such as force equals mass times acceleration, or F = ma), I wanted a social science equation for democracy. After struggling with this problem for months, I ...

Reflections on Consciousness: Mathematical Model Mimicking Consciousness by Vitali Milman 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

Through a blend of theoretical musings and mathematical models, this book delves into the enigmatic realm of consciousness. Mathematician Vitali Milman aspires to demystify consciousness. He aims to initiate an understanding of consciousness by proposing a mathematical model that mirror key aspects of conscious processes. Mathematical knowledge is NOT required to fully understand and enjoy this book. The author also suggests that consciousness manifests not only within individuals but also within larger collectives, intensifying as the system's complexity grows. The text highlights the potential for collective consciousness to overshadow individual awareness and cautiously explores the implications for the emergence of thinking machines. This work is a thought-provoking journey through the intricacies of consciousness, merging philosophical insight with mathematical rigor.

"Probing Freewill: A Story of Autonomy and Inevitability" is a comprehensive exploration of the concept of free will, its implications, and the debates surrounding it. This book is structured into five distinct parts, each delving into different aspects of free will: • Tracing the Origins of Free Will: This section examines the evolutionary foundations of free will, the role of genetics and the environment, the concept of nature via nurture, and the cognitive machinery driving our choices. • The Neurobiology of Choice: This part focuses on the brain's role in decision-making, including brain regions, neural networks, neurotransmitters, hormones, and the impact of cognitive biases and external constraints on our choices. • Morality, Responsibility, and the Lack of Freewill: Here, the book explores the relationship between free will, morality, and responsibility. It discusses the impact of the absence of free will on moral judgments, laws, and societal structures. • The Philosophy of Free Will: This section takes a philosophical approach, tracing historical perspectives, modern debates, and the ethical repercussions of a world without free will. • Navigating a Life Without Choices: The final part addresses the practical aspects of living in a deterministic world. The exploration is intended to be introspective and transformative, encouraging a deeper understanding of the human experience. Flesh and Blood of Putin's Russia by Sergei Biziukin 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Sergei Biziukin is a Russian historian, journalist, and activist. He has been working as a journalist in Russia for 10 years. In November 2016 I started a petition to rename "Godless Street" in the Russian city Ryazan to "Donald Trump Street". The reason was to try and make Russia-United States relations better. On 14 December 2016, Bizyukin was announced as the independent candidate for the Russian presidential election in 2018. Sergei Biziukin: "At that time I hadn't realized, that less than 2 years later, I had to escape from Russia, from the very Trump street, to save my life and the freedom of my family and me. In 2016 I was announced as an independent candidate for the Russian presidential election. The purpose of my nomination was to show that everyone has the right to participate in elections, and this right is vested in the Constitution of the Russian Federation. Unfortunately, many politicians were very frightened after potential presidential candidate Boris Nemtsov was killed in Moscow. Throughout the year, I conducted an active election campaign, met with voters, formed support groups in the regions. Campaigning took place in conditions of terror. In March 2017, an opposition politician, State Duma deputy Denis Voronenkov, was killed. Just like me, Denis Voronenkov emphasized the illegality of the occupation of the Crimea. And in May 2017, I received aggressive messages from neo-Nazis on the Internet. During this period, death threats began to come to me. In December 2017 I stopped the campaign. When it became known about the official nomination of Vladimir Putin, I made a statement that this is a violation of the Constitution of Russia. He does not have any right to be the president for the fourth time. So I could not participate in a crime. Right after the celebration of New Year 2018, it was reported, that a criminal case against me was being prepared for my political beliefs in connection with my statements that the Russian ...

Seeking Intercultural Competence by N. Ferdinandt (Sebastian Gorman) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

Seeking Intercultural Competence presents the essential knowledge for those unfamiliar with the field, moving from understanding the most basic concepts to developing an advanced, personally relevant learning plan for a lifetime of seeking intercultural competence. The book establishes a first principle for intercultural competence and a set of definitions to help the novice. The text also presents practical theories and approaches for any person seeking to become more interculturally competent. N. Ferdinandt argues for seeking intercultural virtues to wage peace in intercultural and international spaces. Ferdinandt draws from years of personal experience traveling abroad and working with international students from all over the world. His anecdotes, mostly humorous cross-cultural failures, help to illustrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for developing intercultural competence for oneself. Throughout the book, a road map for developing a lifelong learning approach reveals itself. The book takes a very pragmatic approach with useful illustrations, charts, and tables that those traveling abroad can take with them, as they seek competency at crossing into the unknown with confidence. This book was developed for self-study and personal development of intercultural competence for those seeking it. It can be used as an affordable course textbook in university settings or to develop curriculum on the subject.

Silent Hill: The Terror Engine (Landmark Video Games) by Bernard Perron (University of Michigan Press) 4.3 Stars (130 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Silent Hill: The Terror Engine, the second of the two inaugural studies in the Landmark Video Games series from series editors Mark J. P. Wolf and Bernard Perron, is both a close analysis of the first three Silent Hill games and a general look at the whole series. Silent Hill, with its first title released in 1999, is one of the most influential of the horror video game series. Perron situates the games within the survival horror genre, both by looking at the history of the genre and by comparing Silent Hill with such important forerunners as Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil. Taking a transmedia approach and underlining the designer's cinematic and literary influences, he uses the narrative structure; the techniques of imagery, sound, and music employed; the game mechanics; and the fiction, artifact, and gameplay emotions elicited by the games to explore the specific fears survival horror games are designed to provoke and how the experience as a whole has made the Silent Hill series one of the major landmarks of video game history.

Existence & Consciousness: A Theory of Naturalistic Idealism by Richard Lucido 4.5 Stars (28 Reviews)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

Existence and Consciousness presents us with a world without space, a world that consists only of information, consciousness, and time. It offers a theory of idealism from an existentialist perspective. Matter, energy, and space are viewed as holding on to no existence outside of their essence (i.e., their defining properties). This is what precludes them from objectively persisting in time. Only consciousness, broken down into its smallest units, is capable of existing beyond its essence. This is what makes it a necessary constituent of reality, for without it the world would be merely an abstraction. Free of new age spiritualism, Existence and Consciousness is a sober and naturalistic attempt at conceptualizing a reality whose primary constituent is consciousness. The book presents its original insights within a broad multidisciplinary backdrop where ideas from contemporary analytical philosophy, existential philosophy, and ancient philosophy are related to empirical findings from psychology, physics, and neuroscience. Its ideas are presented plainly and are intended for a broad educated audience. No prior experience is necessary to engage with this most perplexing and fundamental question: what is the nature of reality? This second edition is updated to include empirical findings that have occurred since the original version was published in 2017.

Trans: a satire by Jen Celador Price verified 2 hours ago

Wally has courageously rejected the species identity arbitrarily assigned to him at birth by his bigoted parents. Now he wants them to pay for his species affirmation surgery, but his cishuman father isn't convinced. Things don't look good for Wally, and his transitional journey appears to be at an end until NAFPA - the National Association of Feelings and Personal Affirmation - gets involved and convinces Wally's parents to support his identity for the sake of his mental health. The good news is that Wally doesn't have to undertake his journey alone. He has a whole group of transspecies friends at his side: there's Kitty the tabby-cat, Rover the rottweiler, and Erica the transsexual kangaroo who aren't about to let any biological facts stand in the way as they shake off the shackles of oppressive species bigotry to forge their own identity. Things really heat up, however, when a teacher questions their true identity - igniting a firestorm of outrage all over social media demanding that the transphobic teacher be fired. While these brave heroes face a lot of resistance from transphobic cisspecies humans, they also encounter unexpected resistance from bigoted hippos (the real ones) who are reluctant to accept a trans-hippo into their herd. Naturally this raises the all-important question on everyone's mind: What exactly is a hippo? Wally eventually actualizes his true species identity, becoming a social media star in the process. But his moment in the sun is soon overshadowed by another trans hero who undertakes a new and innovative transition even more brave and revolutionary than Wally's. What happens next is enough to make even his LGBTQ allies transphobic... Join Wally and his Furry friends as they transition from being human to the species of their choice.

CREEP: A Short Psychological Thriller by William Cook (King Billy Publications) 3.8 Stars (85 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

A dark story of a young woman's date with death! CREEP is a short psychological thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Serial Killers don't always get away with murder, no matter how hard they try. Includes bonus short story - Legacy. From CREEP: "Cassandra pounded on the window and frantically tried to push the rear doors open, first with her shoulders and then with her heels, to no avail. She peered into the dark confines of the garage and saw nothing except her frightened reflection looking back at her in the window, bathed in the dim yellow interior light of the cab. She cupped her neatly manicured hand across her brow and looked out the window again, her button nose touching the smeared glass as she did so. She thought she heard a deep growling noise somewhere nearby outside the cab and then her window was filled with bared teeth and the blackest, evil eyes, she'd ever seen. The huge head of the Rottweiler retreated into the shadows before launching itself back at the vehicle, the razor sharp canines crunching against the window and sending a trail of cracks across the glass. Steaming froth and saliva dripped down the webbed glass as the dog began to bark and thud its massive head against the side of the cab. Cassandra scuttled across the back seat as she wet herself, waves of fear shrinking her into a ball, as the crazed dog leaped at the cab again... " "William Cook tells a gruesome story with a sense of authenticity that makes you question with considerable unease if it really is fiction, after all." - Graham Masterton, author of The Manitou and Descendant "This man is simply scary. There is both a clinical thoroughness and a heartfelt emotional thoroughness to his writing. He manages to shock as well as empathize, to scare as well as acclimatize, yet beneath it all is a well read intelligence that demands to be engaged. I loved Blood Related. Handbook for the Anti-Islamic Resistance by George R. Walters 4.7 Stars (12 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

It is not just rhetoric to note that a state of war between Islam and the non-Muslim world already exists. Islam is and for nearly its entire history been at war with the non-Muslim world. Thus a defacto state of war exists regardless of the lack of or confused and ineffective response from the those being attacked. For more and more of us the need for an international anti-Islamic resistance is self evident. Many of us already recognize that the Islamic ideology is fascism in a religious context. Islam benefits only a small and brutal oligarchy. Islam is also an existential threat to all non-Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Bahai's, atheists, agnostics, etc. That threat is becoming increasingly aggressive and will continue to do so in the future. Unfortunately, despite the fact that ordinary Muslims do not benefit from the Islamic ideology, the record of the non-Islamic world in turning back growing Islamic influence and eventual takeover has been dismal in most cases. Clearly more must be done if we are reverse this ominous trend. To many of us the absolute necessity of resistance to the Islamic ideology and its agenda of global conquest is so self-evident that it hardly bears repeating. Unfortunately, however, it has not been in the interests of even the non-Muslim elites and the media that service those elites to admit the obvious. As a result we must necessarily address and re-address truths that may be instinctively and widely held by many, if not most. Of course those truths, no matter how well documented, will be vigorously denied by Islamists, their "useful idiots," and those who are either willfully ignorant or seeking advantage from enabling Islamist conquest. Yet even if Western governments finally admit the obvious and attempt to address the threat to our societies posed by Islam, success is far from guaranteed. This is both because Western societies present such a variety of targets and the "rules of engagement" that governments ...

The Open Conspiracy by H. G. Wells 4.2 Stars (104 Reviews)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

The novelist behind The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man gets political in his manifesto for creating a more ordered, peaceful planet. The Open Conspiracy is H. G. Wells's attempt to outline how civilization should be ordered through a world commonwealth. He wished for humanity to gain control over its destiny and free itself from the dangers, uncertainties, and miseries it faced. This commonwealth's mission was to support the advancement of all humanity. It would do so through advancing science, ending nationalism, and allowing people to progress by their own merit rather than whatever class they are born into. He believed that through his plan, poverty and warfare would be no more, and we could achieve "universal peace, welfare and happy activity." Originally published in 1928, The Open Conspiracy was revised three times, with its final version appearing in 1933.

"WAR" "Visionary tales of Human Conflict from The Middle East" by Rory Patrick Allen (St. Albans Publishing House) 3.8 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

For millenia The Middle East has been plagued by war. This millenium has been no different, with wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Devastation has been wreaked on ordinary, innocent people. Children have been indiscriminately killed, Young men have had their lives terminated before they have had the chance to live their lives to the full. War orphans abound. Widows and Widowers weep at their spouses' graves. Grand Parents have lost generations of their families. Whole communities have been destroyed and villages razed to the ground. I have lived in The Middle East for twenty five years now and the constant undercurrent of these conflicts is ever present. I remember reading one news report that said that an entire village and its inhabitants were destroyed after a wedding celebration resulted in the village men firing their riflles into the air, a long tradition in village celebrations, it was viewed as an act of aggression and the village and inhabitants were all destoyed. I kept hearing words such as "Collateral Damage", "Carpet Bombing etc, words used by the media to deflect the true horror of the reality of war.It was at this time that I began to have troubled dreams and horrific nightmares about what was really happening in these theatres of war..These vision like dreams inspired me to write the stories that are contained in this work. The messages in these stories are not just relevant to The Middle East but to the world at large.

And they Never Had No Diversity: Confronting the Big Lie by Grant Moore 4.3 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

A must-read book in 2024. A perspective on DIVERSITY you will not find anyplace else. The historical record of the modern world demonstrates clearly that creativity and human achievement has been almost entirely non-diverse. In fact, the great inventions or technical leaps forward come from very non-diverse, uniform, high-trust environments: China for silk, the compass, firearms, gunpowder, paper money; late 18th Century England for the Steam Engine, late 19th Century America for the telephone, and so on. Even the airplane was not invented by "diverse" groups but by a couple of bicycle mechanics from Ohio. Over the course of human history, the world's races, religions, ethnicities and cultures have at various times and in various places, exhibited differences in their productivity and inventiveness. The differences in the distribution of skill and human capital are in constant flux around the world as some nations and cultures ascend (e.g., Japan, China, South Korea) while others stagnate or even decline (e.g., Egypt, Greece). This is not something that can be stopped or even managed. Despite the clarion call of "Diversity is our Strength" it's not religion, race, ethnicity, or gender that's important to a company's workforce: it's just talent and ability, and all the other qualities of good employees. This same principle applies to each of us in everyday life: be a patriot, a law-abiding citizen, a productive co-worker, and a dependable neighbor. Diversity should be left to proceed as it has always done throughout human history: by the free adoption of good inventions and good ideas by people worldwide from whomever and from wherever these inventions and ideas have materialized. To do otherwise is directly at odds with the goals of a meritocratic society. And don't forget to checkout Mr. Moore's first book "Is it Just Me? A Canadian Conservative's Unapologetic Thoughts about 21st Century North America Life" (2nd Edition), also available on Amazon.

Not Another Average Guy: An Exemplar For The Modern Man by A.P. Hovsepian 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

Every boy needs a strong male figure in their life. Especially in the formative years. And yet, it's no secret that most of us were deprived of this very thing. No one was there to guide, shape and mold us into men. Our fathers may have been around, but few took it upon themselves to teach us what it meant to be a man. As a result, we've all suffered -- both directly and indirectly -- a great deal of unnecessary pain and frustration in adulthood; where life demanded the price of ignorance be paid (with interest!) While time travel is not a viable solution (yet), the next best thing is to learn these lessons now. Not Another Average Guy is an amalgamation of decades of wisdom, forged by trial and error in the midst of life's most difficult struggles; Struggles one too many men had to personally endure. It offers a gift most males crave from a young age: the gift of direction.

Race for Citizenship: Black Orientalism and Asian Uplift from Pre-Emancipation to Neoliberal America (Nation of Nations Book 23) by Helen Heran Jun (NYU Press) 3.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 11 minutes ago

Helen Heran Jun explores how the history of U.S. citizenshiphas positioned Asian Americans and African Americans in interlocking socio-political relationships since the mid nineteenth century. Rejecting the conventional emphasis on 'inter-racial prejudice,' Jun demonstrates how a politics of inclusion has constituted a racial Other within Asian American and African American discourses of national identity. Race for Citizenship examines three salient moments when African American and Asian American citizenship become acutely visible as related crises: the 'Negro Problem' and the 'Yellow Question' in the mid- to late 19th century; World War II-era questions around race, loyalty, and national identity in the context of internment and Jim Crow segregation; and post-Civil Rights discourses of disenfranchisement and national belonging under globalization. Taking up a range of cultural texts -- the 19th century black press, the writings of black feminist Anna Julia Cooper, Asian American novels, African American and Asian American commercial film and documentary -- Jun does not seek to document signs of cross-racial identification, but instead demonstrates how the logic of citizenship compels racialized subjects to produce developmental narratives of inclusion in the effort to achieve political, economic, and social incorporation. Race for Citizenship provides a new model of comparative race studies by situating contemporary questions of differential racial formations within a long genealogy of anti-racist discourse constrained by liberal notions of inclusion.

Reclaiming Socialism, or: Economic Democracy (Recovering a Stolen Word) by Brian Rush 3.9 Stars (37 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Imagine getting up in the morning and going to work for a company that, just by virtue of the fact that you work for it, you own part of. Imagine that the company's president and other officers have to stand for election every year or two years, and you and all the other employees of the company vote them in or out. Imagine getting an accounting on a quarterly basis of the company's profitability and receiving a payout of your share of those profits - your due as a worker-owner. Imagine that you get tired of working for the company you own part of and decide to strike out on your own. Imagine that there are on-line services readily available where your skills demand high pay from independent clients, so that being self-employed and entirely your own boss is a matter only of doing the work. Or let's say that you and a number of friends have an idea for a new business. Imagine a non-profit organization or perhaps a government agency set up just for that purpose, ready to provide you and your friends a low-interest loan, free advice, and lots of other assistance so you can do that - as long as your new business is a workers' cooperative. Imagine a world in which nobody is obscenely rich and nobody is poor, and the average person makes about double - maybe triple - what most people make today. I can imagine that easily enough. Can you? Would you like to live in a world like that? I sure would. We're ready for it. We just have to believe it and reach for it, and reclaim the word that stands for it. That word is "socialism." It's being misused today to describe something it's not, a world of giant bureaucracies, stagnant economies, and secret police. That's not what it means. It means a world in which ordinary people - probably people like you - own the businesses that provide your livelihood, instead of the economy being owned by a few hogs on Wall Street who see you as their peon. That's what socialism is about. It's about finally freeing ourselves from the ...

Liberalism and Mass Shootings (A Christian Response to America’s Mental Health Crisis) by Roger Ball 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Are today's young people being psychologically conditioned to violence, sexual perversion, and suicidal hopelessness? Will mass shootings continue? Is the rise in same-sex attraction a closely related problem? Will violence continue to increase? Will deaths of despair continue to rise? Will America destroy itself from within? REVISED AND EDITED: America is now facing the worst psychological crisis in its history. What has changed over the past fifty-plus years that would produce such an outcome? How long will mass shootings (and school shootings) continue? Why do so many young people struggle with murderous and suicidal impulses (not to mention depression, anxiety, and same-sex attraction)? "I want to show how the problem of mass shootings, and America's mental health crisis in general, can be attributed to three primary causes: 1) the psychological effects of today's passive childrearing practices (producing low self-worth, insecurity, depression, self-doubt, anger, envious resentment, self-loathing, entitlement, loneliness, vindictive behavior, and same-sex attraction). Kids today are hurting on a much deeper level than anything seen in recent generations. They are also more unbridled than ever and likely to act upon distorted emotional urges and impulses. 2) the breakdown of the traditional family structure which produces these same psychological effects only worse. This has been accomplished primarily by extending sexual permissiveness throughout society, which has produced countless fatherless and dysfunctional homes. The majority of mass shooters and other violent offenders come from these environments. 3) the uncivilized means by which we bring about change in society (radical politics). This third element is what brings it all together. It is also a product of the first two. As most are aware, the spiritual seekers of the sixties (hippies) that brought us the sexual revolution were predominantly the children of gross neglect. This revolution is where ...

The Rise of Trump: America's Authoritarian Spring by Matthew C MacWilliams 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

The ascendance of Donald Trump to the presidential candidacy of the Republican Party has been both remarkable and, to most commentators, unlikely. In The Rise of Trump: America's Authoritarian Spring, Matthew MacWilliams argues that Trump's rapid rise through a bewildered Republican Party hierarchy is no anomaly; rather, MacWilliams argues, it is the most recent expression of a long-standing theme in American political life, the tendency and temptation to an ascriptive politics -- a political view that builds its basic case on ascribing to any relatively disempowered group (whether defined by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, or other identifying category) a certain set of qualities that justify discriminatory treatment. The ascriptive tradition in American politics, though longstanding, has generally been kept to a relatively small minority -- a minority whose rights, perhaps paradoxically, have been protected by the principles of Madisonian democracy, even though central to its worldview is the need and urgency of limiting the rights of some. It has found champions in years past in such figures as Andrew Jackson, Huey Long, Joseph McCarthy, and Pat Buchanan. But in Donald Trump this tradition has found a significant new voice, one emboldened by deeper shifts in the American political landscape. Trump's swift and unsettling rise to the pinnacle of presidential politics may point toward the emergence of more significant and substantial questions about the future course of a democratic government committed to principles of equality and the freedom of expression, association, and conscience.

Congo's Children by Kem Knapp Sawyer (Pulitzer Center) 3.2 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Children in the Democratic Republic of Congo have seen their lives threatened, their families torn apart, their schools destroyed, and their futures compromised. Many are homeless -- abandoned street children, some accused of witchcraft, others born of rape or orphaned by war. But while children are the most vulnerable segment of a broken society, they are also among the most resilient. Congo's Children tells their stories, accompanied by vivid photography and video and drawing on reporting that has appeared in PBS NewsHour, The Washington Post, TruthAtlas, and other outlets. "The stunning photographs and deeply moving text of this book offer a fine introduction to the suffering -- and hopes -- of people in a part of the world we know far too little about." -- Adam Hochschild, author, King Leopold's Ghost "Here's the Congo that doesn't make the news clips or TV screens. The everyday Congo, with people managing to organize, create art, and educate each other despite the odds. A touching paean to the country's resilience." -- Jason Stearns, author, Dancing in the Glory of Monsters: The Collapse of the Congo and the Great War of Africa "The Sawyers' book on Congo's Children is a powerful tool for students of all ages to begin to understand complex issues of poverty and conflict through seeing how knowing people as individuals is a first step in protecting human rights and resolving disputes." -- John B. Hardman, president and chief executive of the Carter Center

Macroeconomics, Agriculture, and Food Security: A Guide to Policy Analysis in Developing Countries by Eugenio Díaz-Bonilla (International Food Policy Research Institute) 3.9 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Why write a book on macroeconomic policies and their links to agriculture and food security in developing countries? The food price spikes of the years just prior to 2010 and the economic, political, and social dislocations they generated refocused the attention of policymakers and development practitioners on the agricultural sector and food security concerns. But even without those traumatic events, the importance of agriculture for developing countries -- and for an adequate functioning of the world economy -- cannot be denied. First, although declining over time, primary agriculture still represents important percentages of developing countries' overall domestic production, exports, and employment. If agroindustrial, transportation, commercial, and other related activities are also counted, then the economic and social importance of agriculture-based sectors increases significantly. Furthermore, large numbers of the world's poor still live in rural areas and work in agriculture. Through the links via production, trade, employment, and prices, agricultural production is also crucial for national food security. Second, it has been shown that agriculture in developing countries has important growth and employment multipliers for the rest of the economy, and agriculture seems to have larger positive effects in reducing poverty than growth in other sectors. Third, agriculture is not only important for individual developing countries, but it has global significance, considering the large presence of developing countries in world agricultural production and the increasing participation in international trade of those products (these three points will be covered in greater detail in Chapter 1).

Inane Interpolations In Bhagvad-Gita : (An Invocation for their Revocation) by BS Murthy (Amazon Digital Services) 4.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Why is This Book Now? The Manusmriti, the social doctrine of yore, and the Bhagvad-Gita, the spiritual tomein vogue that lay down the discriminatory dharma (duties) of the four social classes (castes) have been the bugbears of the Hindu backward classes. However, to their chagrin, of late, as the latter is beingmindlessly promoted even though the former was constitutionally debunked, they began advocating that it too should be dumped in a dustbin. Ironically, the improbability of their progenitor Krishna, the architect of the Gita, relegating his own ilk to the social margins failed to dawn upon these that Gita supposedly slights, even to this day! Thus, their intellectuals, instead of seeking to reclaim their priceless heritage, albeit after ridding its interpolative garbage, tend to rubbish it a la throwing the baby with the bathwater, and needless to say they must ponder. Also, it is high time that the Gita-class stop laying store by the self-aggrandizing verses in this Vy?sa's classic, evidently inserted by their progenitors that came to bedevil the Hindu spiritual integrity and social harmony. Likewise, the grumblers of the dalit desertions must see the need for setting the Hindu house in order to prevent the fractious poaching by the Church, if not to facilitate the 'hoped for' return of the prodigals. So also those who take pride that Hinduism is the only religion that reckons all faith as true, should be concerned about the 'in vogue' Gita that belittles some of their caste fellows. Besides, this work beckons the feminists to reckon the second of the two interpolations from it cited in the cover image that degrades them in unspeakable terms. It is hoped that this 'overdue' work, may lead the 'denied' castes as well as the favoured folks for an objective approach to the Gita 'as it is' which could dispel the misgivings of the former and the delusions of the latter, thereby bridging the Hindu emotional gulf with its abridged book that restores its original ...

Misreading the Bengal Delta: Climate Change, Development, and Livelihoods in Coastal Bangladesh (Culture, Place, and Nature) by Camelia Dewan 4.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one minute ago

Perilously close to sea level and vulnerable to floods, erosion, and cyclones, Bangladesh is one of the top recipients of development aid earmarked for climate change adaptation. Yet to what extent do adaptation projects address local needs and concerns? Combining environmental history and ethnographic fieldwork with development professionals, rural farmers, and landless women, Misreading the Bengal Delta critiques development narratives of Bangladesh as a "climate change victim." It examines how development actors repackage colonial-era modernizing projects, which have caused severe environmental effects, as climate-adaptation solutions. Seawalls meant to mitigate against cyclones and rising sea levels instead silt up waterways and induce drainage-related flooding. Other adaptation projects, from saline aquaculture to high-yield agriculture, threaten soil fertility, biodiversity, and livelihoods. Bangladesh's environmental crisis goes beyond climate change, extending to coastal vulnerabilities that are entwined with underemployment, debt, and the lack of universal healthcare. This timely book analyzes how development actors create flawed causal narratives linking their interventions in the environment and society of the Global South to climate change. Ultimately, such misreadings risk exacerbating climatic threats and structural inequalities. Misreading the Bengal Delta is available in an open access edition through the Sustainable History Monograph Pilot, thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Speaking in Silence: Censorship in Vietnam by Bui Thanh Hieu 3.2 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

In the holiday paradise Vietnam, social media are allowed only to provide and exchange personal information. Bloggers and cyberdissidents who dare to question the government's legitimacy or domestic policies are ruthlessly suppressed. Political blogger Bui Thanh Hieu (1972) nevertheless uses the Internet to criticize politically hot topics, such as Vietnam's territorial claims within China as well as its handling of land disputes with the Catholic Church. In response to this, Hieu was arrested, his computers confiscated. The license for his Internet café in Hanoi was revoked. Hieu persisted however: his blog was being read by up to 15,000 visitors per day. Because of his commitment, he was arrested and detained on numerous occasions. At the invitation of the city of Weimar, Germany, he was finally able to leave the country. There he finished Speaking in Silence. In this short story he laments, with humour and irony, the behaviour of civil servants of the special judicial, administrative and technological strike force, who control online information. A publication of the Eva Tas Foundation. The Eva Tas Foundation encourages publication and promotion of texts that are, no matter where and no matter how, subject to censorship.

On The Human Species: A Philosophy on Reason and the Emergence of Civilized Humanity by Anthony Pellegrino 3.6 Stars (14 Reviews)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

On the Human Species is a philosophical and psychological discourse that charts the origin and evolution of our species. The book is an inspired combination of science and philosophy, a brilliant canvas of intellectual thought and discerning anthropology. In this work, Mr. Pellegrino delves within the origin of our species from the conception of reason to the creation of religion. The book also explains human emotions, the origin of vice, and an illusory morality that manifests itself as accountability, but also differentiates our species from the remainder of the animal kingdom.

Putting Federalism in Its Place: The Territorial Politics of Social Policy Revisited by Scott L. Greer (University of Michigan Press) Price verified 4 hours ago

What does federalism do to welfare states? This question arises in scholarly debates about policy design as well as in discussions about the right political institutions for a country. It has frustrated many, with federalism seeming to matter in all sorts of combinations with all sorts of issues, from nationalism to racism to intergovernmental competition. The diffuse federalism literature has not come to compelling answers for very basic questions. Scott L. Greer, Daniel Béland, André Lecours, and Kenneth A. Dubin argue for a new approach -- one methodologically focused on configurations of variables within cases rather than a fruitless attempt to isolate "the" effect of federalism; and one that is substantively engaged with identifying key elements in configurations as well as with when and how their interactions matter. Born out of their work on a multi-year, eleven-country project (published as Federalism and Social Policy: Patterns of Redistribution in Eleven Countries, University of Michigan Press, 2019), this book comprises a methodological and substantive agenda. Methodologically, the authors shift to studies that embraced and understood the complexity within which federal political institutions operate. Substantively, they make an argument for the importance of plurinationalism, changing economic interests, and institutional legacies.

Step One: Save the World: The Journey of a Water Protector by DJ Rankin 3.3 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

??This is a cookbook. This is an adventure novel. This is a love story. This is a tale of survival. This is a spiritual journey. This is a catalog of the oppressions and destructions perpetrated by the machine of mankind. This is a handbook on standing up to the tyranny enacted by a corrupt government through the mechanism of fear. This is a recruitment manual for a global movement of resistance. We are winning. It is time to stand up. Enough is enough. Do what feels right. ??Last winter I was called to Standing Rock to protect the water and my entire world was flipped upside down. I lived in the most amazing, love based, frozen tipi utopia, where I connected with the greatest human beings imaginable, and connected to myself and the universe through the ceremonies of the Lakota people, and through science. I was simultaneously exposed to not only the long list of evils unleashed on our species and planet in the name of money, but witnessed this first hand through a cloud of tear gas and militarized police. It was the greatest experience ever. I mean, I was grilling steaks in a forty below lightening blizzard. You should come over for dinner sometime.

Agricultural Extension: Global Status and Performance in Selected Countries by Kristin Davis 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

Agricultural transformation and development are critical to the livelihoods of more than a billion small-scale farmers and other rural people in developing countries. Extension and advisory services play an important role in such transformation and can assist farmers with advice and information, brokering and facilitating innovations and relationships, and dealing with risks and disasters. In Agricultural Extension: Global Status and Performance in Selected Countries, researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute and other experts provide a global overview of agricultural extension and advisory services, assesses and compare extension systems at the national and regional levels, examine the performance of extension approaches in a selected set of country cases, and shares lessons and policy insights. Drawing on both primary and secondary data, the authors apply a common and comprehensive framework -- the "best-fit" approach -- to assessments of extension systems, which allows for comparison across cases and geographies. Insights from the research support reforms -- in governance, capacity, management, and advisory methods -- to improve outcomes, enhance financial sustainability, and achieve greater scale. Agricultural Extension should be a valuable resource for policymakers, extension practitioners, and others concerned with agricultural development.

The Politics of India under Modi: An Introduction to India’s Democracy, Economy, and Foreign Policy (ASIANetwork Books) by Vikash Yadav (Lever Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

Since the right-wing, Hindu-nationalist government of Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power at the national level in 2014, and with its consolidation of power in the 2019 general election, India has witnessed a significant realignment of its national politics and a shift toward the right of the political spectrum. The Politics of India under Modi provides a detailed overview of India's political trends, economic prospects, and international relations in the twenty-first century. This book is designed as a supplement and update for existing syllabi that trace India's political economy from the birth of the republic to the quest for economic liberalization and great power status. Undergraduates and scholars interested in India's foreign policy and political reform will find value in this timely book. "The subject of this book is extremely compelling and important, as well as timely. BJP rule and the Modi regime, it is now clear, represent some critical turning points in Indian politics, which have yet to be analyzed in depth academically by experts. I see this book as a key first step in this process." -Rina Verma Williams, School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Cincinnati

The Disarticulate: Language, Disability, and the Narratives of Modernity (Cultural Front Book 8) by James Berger (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified one hour ago

Language is integral to our social being. But what is the status of those who stand outside of language? The mentally disabled, "wild" children, people with autism and other neurological disorders, as well as animals, infants, angels, and artificial intelligences, have all engaged with language from a position at its borders. In the intricate verbal constructions of modern literature, the 'disarticulate' -- those at the edges of language -- have, paradoxically, played essential, defining roles. Drawing on the disarticulate figures in modern fictional works such as Billy Budd, The Sound and the Fury, Nightwood, White Noise, and The Echo Maker, among others, James Berger shows in this intellectually bracing study how these characters mark sites at which aesthetic, philosophical, ethical, political, medical, and scientific discourses converge. It is also the place of the greatest ethical tension, as society confronts the needs and desires of "the least of its brothers." Berger argues that the disarticulate is that which is unaccountable in the discourses of modernity and thus stands as an alternative to the prevailing social order. Using literary history and theory, as well as disability and trauma theory, he examines how these disarticulate figures reveal modernity's anxieties in terms of how it constructs its others.

European Strategic Autonomy and Small States' Security: In the Shadow of Power (Routledge Studies in European Security and Strategy) by Giedrius Česnakas 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 30 minutes ago

This book analyses whether the EU's drift towards European strategic autonomy presents a challenge or a window of opportunity for its small member states to advance their security interests. The volume presents small states' perceptions of European strategic autonomy, highlighting their expectations and concerns. The chapters focus on the depth and breadth of European strategic autonomy, national security considerations, assessment of the impact on transatlantic relations, the expected outputs, and its potential impact on the EU's institutional structure. It also shows how systemic circumstances and the interests of powerful states, either belonging to the EU (France, Germany, and Poland) or having a significant say in European security architecture (the US), establish opportunities and constraints for the small states to shape European strategic autonomy. In particular, the study focuses on the diverging interests of the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, and the Netherlands. It demonstrates that, in most cases, European strategic autonomy is perceived not as an alternative to NATO but as a supplementary element that could facilitate the development of national military capabilities, indigenous defence industries and resilience to non-military threats. Ultimately, the book suggests that national approaches towards European strategic autonomy mainly stem from pragmatic national security and foreign policy considerations, while largely ignoring grand strategic ideas. This book will be of much interest to students of European politics, security studies, and international relations.
