The Legend of Captain Kidd: Pirate or Hero: The Shocking Tale Of Skulldugery and Politics on the High Seas by Noel Young 4.5 Stars (14 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

In the annals of piracy, few figures are as enigmatic and controversial as Captain William Kidd. His journey from a reputable seaman to one of the most infamous pirates encapsulates the blurred lines and moral ambiguities of 17th-century piracy and privateering. But he also lived through seismic times in the history of England, Scotland, the Caribbean and of the Americas, especially New York. It's an incredible journey, scuppered by those in high places with wealth and power that all began with maritime tradition dating before Julius Caesar. But, in 1696, it's Kidd's maritime career that takes a decisive turn. He was entrusted with the command of the Adventure Galley. His task was to hunt down pirates and French vessels in the Indian Ocean, a region notorious for piracy. This mission, sponsored by some of the most powerful men in England, and New York, seemed to be a golden opportunity but it all goes horribly wrong. Captain Kidd's legacy, a mixture of vilification and romanticisation, also begs the question, was his execution legal and was he innocent of the crimes as charged. Is the treasure still out there? In the following pages we cover each of the charges, and show that Captain Kidd was not a pirate, nor a murderer but a man who tried his best to serve his King and country only to be punished by the very same men who professed to support him.

Early snowstorms caused the Donner Party to become stranded and lost in the mountains in the winter of 1846. This was the beginning of what would come to be the reason for the Donner Party to earn themselves a spot in the history books, murder, and Cannibalism. Who was Albert Johnson, the Mad Trapper of Rat River? What drove this foul-tempered loner to become a murderer? The Starving Time at Jamestown in 1609 - 1610. An all but forgotten moment in history where many starving colonists resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. The SS Sultana sinking produced a greater loss of life than the Titanic. Three of the boat's four boilers exploded and she burned to the waterline and sank near Memphis, Tennessee. The official count by the United States Customs Service of the dead was 1,547 with only 931 survivors. This maritime disaster is a sadly overlooked moment in history. Please allow me to tell you about it.

My Non Mathematical Biography: A memoir of a scientist by Vitali Milman Price verified 3 hours ago

Vitali Milman, a world-renowned mathematician who was selected in 2018 by the Milner Global Foundation and the Marker magazine as one of the 70 most influential scientists in Israel, shares his unique and extraordinary journey in the world. In his concise style, Professor Milman describes his remarkable life path, which spans on six decades of accomplished academic career. He recounts the ups and downs, the hardships and the fantastic strokes of luck which saved his life many times. The narrative focuses on the emotional impact the historical and personal events had on Milman's life and the way they affected his personality and development. Born in Odessa, the former USSR, his childhood was shadowed by the horrors of WW2, his youth by anti-Semitism and the terrors of the Stalin regime. A few chapters are depicting this time, providing a unique personal account of the state of mind of this dark era. He recounts the family's struggle to get a permission to leave Russia from a secret scientific city, the immigration to Israel, the trials of his first steps as new immigrant in Israel, and his participation in the Lebanon war, where he served in the front line. As Prof. Milman tells of his battle of an immigrant to the top of the world of mathematics, he portrays numerous famous figures of this discipline; scientists, lecturers and brilliant students he met along his way. This memoire provides a fascinating glance on the world by a mathematician, as well as a rare portrayal of a few eras in the history of the Russian Jewish people via the personal narrative of an immigrant scientist.

Unbelievable Crimes Volume One: Macabre Yet Unknown True Crime Stories by Daniela Airlie 4.2 Stars (340 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Step into some of the most heinous (yet relatively unknown) crimes ever committed and delve into twelve twisted tales of murder in Unbelievable Crimes. From the deplorable abduction and imprisonment of young women by James Jamelske, who kept his victims in his basement, to the tale of charismatic charmer Charles Schmid who boasted about his savage murders, each story in this anthology dives into pure evil. In one case, I'll take you back to 1993, to the city of Houston, where two teenage girls, Jennifer Ertman, and Elizabeth Peña, were brutally raped and murdered. This crime can only be described as barbaric and senseless, especially when you factor in the young ages of the killers. I'll delve into the bizarre and twisted story of Carl Tanzler, a man who becomes fixated on a beautiful young woman. After her untimely death, he kept her as a mummified corpse in his home for years, with a genuinely inexplicable outcome. You'll also be introduced to the gruesome story of Omaima Nelson, an Egyptian-American woman who killed her husband before cooking and eating parts of his body. While most people know about the incomprehensible acts of Ted Bundy or the wicked crimes of the "killer clown" John Wayne Gacy, there's an underbelly of true crime that has been left untouched over the years. These crimes had a fleeting news story or a 30-second snippet on a local news station and have since been long forgotten. I believe we should remember these crimes to ensure the victims - and their ordeals - don't get wiped from true crime history. Discover the dark side of humanity as I delve into some of the most shocking and twisted little-known true crime stories in Unbelievable Crimes Volume One. To most, the senseless acts of violence and pure evil depicted in these cases are simply unimaginable. But, they're all somebody's reality. Please note, as with all true crime content, this book contains details that cover real-life murders and violence.

Arts Council Immortals by Kevin Kiely 3.6 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Arts Council Immortals is a satire in the blockbuster genre using real names and events. During four decades -- 1980-2020 the arts council in 70 Merrion Square, Dublin received government grants totalling over 1.6 billion. Their worst kept secrets are the hierarchy, careerism, imposition of 'arts policy' and fear in controlling the national arts-scene by absolute power. A Haughey-esque group with the bogus name 'aosdána' infiltrated the council in the 1980s. This 'ace gang' were self-elected to siphon euro-millions for themselves while being nowhere enshrined in any law or statutory instrument. The admin-staff, board and insiders absorb excessive percentages of the annual grants in salaries, expenses, and perks according to the council's politburo structures devoid of democratic principles. The council 'declares' financial data annually in reports, including artspeak and brochure rhetoric. The financial data relates to the cash flow in denominations from millions to thousands disguised in elementary accountancy. The arts council mechanism of 'Declared Interest' is executed by dictatorial illuminati dispensing grant monies through covert networking within their loyal cliques. Arts Council Immortals foregrounds obvious solutions for an institution which is unquantifiable, non-measurable, out of control in psychopathology, and has become a Khmer Rouge Kulchur Cult. Council reports from 1951-2020 are presented in excerpts with photographs and cash flow statements, as well as personal testimonies from 'insiders' commenting on the corruption. Contending with Paul: The Hidden Story Behind the Writing of Matthew, Mark, and Luke by William Joseph Cobble Price verified 31 minutes ago

Awarded Amazon's "#1 New Release in Biographies of Judaism" Contending with Paul: The Hidden Story Behind the Writing of Matthew, Mark and Luke, is not a book that easily fits into existing genres. Within its pages one will find history, theology, biography, and literary criticism. This book focuses primarily on the first two generations of the Christian movement. The first generation includes the Apostles, Jesus' family members, and Paul. It is this generation who would first debate how the message of Jesus should be presented to the Gentile world (non-Jews) and what would be expected of those Gentiles who desired to follow Jesus. It is the second generation of believers who began to write in a new literary genre that Christians call "gospels." The Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of Mark, and the Gospel of Luke, are the earliest three to have survived, and it is through these writings that the debates of the first generation get carried forward by the second. Though all three gospels were written after the death of Paul, it is asserted by the author that each gospel writer contended with his continuing influence in some way, though each from their own distinctive vantage point. Paul's influence may be underestimated if one only counts his extant works in the New Testament. Modern Bibles attribute 13 letters to Paul, while some older Bibles attribute a 14th by assigning the Epistle to the Hebrews to him as well. To ask if a mere 13 letters sent out to churches and individuals throughout the Graeco-Roman world would have been enough to influence the later gospel writers is to ask the wrong question. For the benefit of using a round number, it can be estimated that Paul ministered for 30 years. Also, for the sake of a round number, the churches and individuals to whom he corresponded may be estimated to be 20. Supposing he wrote to each of these entities twice a year, Paul's total ministerial correspondence would rise from his 13 extant works to an output of 1,200. ...
