For fans of Sherlock Holmes, The Princess Bride and Pirates of the Caribbean comes a fun, quirky, detective adventure, weaving together humor and terror, friendship and betrayal, justice and iniquity. The Industrial Revolution rages, and inventors race to patent the latest steam technology. But no one cares. They'd rather read The Crimson Run, the gripping newspaper series recounting the clever heists of the Crimson thieves. But when a series of suspicious deaths befall the inventors, Lady Isabelle Viece is the only one who sees the connection between them and The Crimson Run column. Armed with her considerable inheritance, unrivaled intelligence, and immutable penchant for justice, Isabelle is determined to discover the Puppet Master behind England's greatest scandal. There's just one problem: she's not a detective. With the constable chief, a crime lord, and a failed circus troupe as allies (oh, and Constable Alex Corbin -- he's there too), Isabelle takes justice into her own hands. Will she catch the Crimsons and stop the Puppet Master? Or will justice come at a price she can't pay?

The Evolution of a Scar by Amara Huck 4.6 Stars (20 Reviews)    Price verified 4 minutes ago

Jordan I hated my scars. They were a symbol of everything that was wrong in my life. Everything changed when I met psychic Molly Welch. She claimed that I could have a do-over. I would get to change the story of my life. I didn't believe her at first, but then I found myself in downtown Omaha of 1958. Now that I was here, I was going to take it all back. I was going to find and end the man who destroyed my life before he had the chance to do it. I had no idea what was just around the corner. Molly said that once I'd fixed everything, my journey in the past would end and it would hurt. I didn't believe that either. I should have. James When I wasn't working, I was at the gym. No matter how big I bulked up, I couldn't shake the nagging feeling that it wasn't enough. I was damaged. I had saved myself for the right girl, but after Korea, I was afraid that day would never come. Jordan walked into Archie's bar looking for work and lit a spark of hope in my life. When an all too familiar episode of panic left her crumpled on the floor, I scooped her up in my big arms and promised I'd chase all of her monsters away. I meant it. Archie There was nothing wrong with my attitude. I couldn't help that I was right. Human beings were terrible. My father was a dark void in a fancy suit. My ex-fiancé was Satan in a Tiffany's bracelet. They both tried to break me and failed. I was as stubborn as an ox and was going to do things my way... Then Jordan came along. She mouthed off to me at a diner, and I knew I was in trouble. At first, I thought she was another pawn in my father's scheme, but then she had a breakdown at my bar. My father doesn't deal in damaged goods. If he didn't send her to manipulate me, then what was her angle? She was hiding something. It was only a matter of time before I figured it out. Guy Jordan was a short, sassy, delicious little "human being". She's actually a Martian. She basically admitted it to me. Anyway, I loved her. I loved her face. Her laugh. ...

Carnivore Connoisseur: Discover the Science, Ethics and Culture Behind the Carnivorous Diet Beyond Steak (Raw and Unfiltered) by Camilo Cesarino Price verified 21 minutes ago

Welcome to the jungle If you are here, it is because you have heard the call of the flesh, the fat, and the fire. And no, we're not talking about one more diet to fill your Instagram feed with photos of wilted salads or bland smoothies. We're talking about something deeper, more visceral. We're talking about paying tribute to the meat gods, exploring the art and science of the carnivorous diet, and diving into a lifestyle that goes beyond steak. Whether you're a meat lover, a gourmet looking for bold flavors, or just curious to understand what the hell this diet is, you've come to the right place. This book is your guide, your map, and your instruction manual for an epic culinary journey. Let's explore the science, ethics, and culture behind the carnivorous diet, but don't expect a boring lecture. Here we are going to tell you things as they are, without added sugar (because sugar is poison, remember?). Let's talk about how this diet can transform your health, how you can enjoy food like never before, and how you can navigate a world full of myths and misunderstandings about meat consumption. Good food, good eating, is a matter of blood, viscera, and decomposition. It's the sodium curdled pork fat, the stinky triple cream cheeses, the tender gizzards, and the distended livers of young animals. Eating meat is risking the dark, bacterial forces of beef, chicken, cheese, or seafood. The first two hundred and seven Wellfleet clams may put you into a state of ecstasy, but the two hundred and eight may send you to bed with sweats, chills, and vomiting. But, oh, the glory in that risk! Gastronomy is the science of pain, and carnivores are its most devoted followers. Being a carnivorous connoisseur isn't just about eating meat. It's understanding the meat. It's knowing where it comes from, how it's cooked, what flavors it can offer, and how it can transform your health. It's knowing the science behind the diet, but it's also appreciating the ethics and sustainability of ...

A pharmaceuticals salesman in Montreal, he's a normal guy in his late 20s living in the digital age. He works, dates, meets friends, swims, goes to yoga class, talks to his cat and surfs the internet. But a lot of what he does is time-wasting, a filling of a void. There is no search for higher meaning, to find his place in the world, or to come to terms with grief and loss. He's caught up in what he's doing and so is everyone else. There's no time to question anything. With the help of some real-world friends, Joe manages to get outside his comfort zone, first at a tech-free resort, then by going on a digital diet, and finally by starting a movement that goes viral online: Simplicity. He wants to reduce his dependence on technology and get control of his life. But he's not the only one who wants this. What starts as an underground movement quickly goes mainstream. The simplicity truisms, lifted from the statements Joe's father used to make, become the gospel for a disenchanted generation desperate for guidance and definition. The Dark (The Dark Series Book 1) by Charnae 5.0 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 4 minutes ago

My grandmother is gone. I watched her walk into the Dark, and those who enter that place are never seen or heard from again. My name is Vale Rennick, and I've lived all of my eighteen years in a tiny community of three thousand people surrounded by the Dark. We know little about the Dark but have experience with the requirements it sets, like how minimal space and limited resources necessitate our eldest citizen to enter the Dark upon the birth of a new baby. The fate of the departed, like the origin of the Dark, is a mystery. My family keeps our community's history, and Gran, our most seasoned story keeper, is the latest to walk. But on her Departure Day, she gives my father the last of her stories. Information I hope will reveal the secrets of the Dark, end the departures, and reunite me with Gran. Information he refuses to give me. But amid smothered hopes, the impossible happens. Three strangers emerge from the Dark, desperate for my help, demanding my secrecy, and opening an entire world of possibilities. They are the key to getting answers. If only the strangers would abandon their pesky set of rules. And their most frustrating rule of all? Not to tell me anything.

Cosmopolitanisms and the Jews (Social History, Popular Culture, And Politics In Germany) by Cathy Gelbin (University of Michigan Press) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 33 minutes ago

Cosmopolitanisms and the Jews adds significantly to contemporary scholarship on cosmopolitanism by making the experience of Jews central to the discussion, as it traces the evolution of Jewish cosmopolitanism over the last two centuries. The book sets out from an exploration of the nature and cultural-political implications of the shifting perceptions of Jewish mobility and fluidity around 1800, when modern cosmopolitanist discourse arose. Through a series of case studies, the authors analyze the historical and discursive junctures that mark the central paradigm shifts in the Jewish self-image, from the Wandering Jew to the rootless parasite, the cosmopolitan, and the socialist internationalist. Chapters analyze the tensions and dualisms in the constructed relationship between cosmopolitanism and the Jews at particular historical junctures between 1800 and the present, and probe into the relationship between earlier anti-Semitic discourses on Jewish cosmopolitanism and Stalinist rhetoric.

From the River to the Sea: A Novel of Love and Conflict on an Elite College Campus by Lawrence Martin (Lakeside Press) 5.0 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 4 minutes ago

"From the River to the Sea" is a novel centered on a fictional elite university campus outside Chicago. It takes place in the year before the Hamas massacre of Israelis on October 7, 2023. The protagonists are college students affected by the campus BDS movement (boycott, divestment, sanctions of Israel). Some are supportive and others are in strong opposition. Through dialogue, much background information about the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict is presented. The two main characters are senior David Applebaum and Freshman Rebecca Goldman. David wants Rebecca in his bed. Initially, she says no. Repeatedly. But then something bad happens, and she reconsiders. Other characters include Michael Solomon, a Jewish convert to the Bahá?í faith, Gordon Geddy, the local BDS club leader, and a history professor who has a new book to explain the anti-Semitism on college campuses. Early in the novel two FBI agents pay a visit to the school president's office. They relay concern about a possible terrorist attack on campus. Is BDS involved? Possibly. Readers should find the novel both educational and entertaining. Educational; Historical context for the Hamas attack and war that followed. Entertaining; Sex (not graphic), love, mayhem. It's all here.

Son in Bag by Salustiano Berrios 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 4 minutes ago

In a world where the dead stay dead... until they don't... one man embarks on an epic quest to take his deceased child up north to bury him alongside his mother. But not far behind, is another man hellbent on stopping that from happening for reasons his own. A father's love for his child, and a man's love for retribution, clash in a world gone apocalyptic, where the dead roam the world, and those still alive must contend with the fallout. Pedro Rivera's six-year-old son, Carlos, has passed away, in a world where the dead, for inexplicable reasons, are returning to life with a gluttonous hunger for human flesh. Not the only one weighed down with a heavy emotional toll, the entire world over is starting to come loose at the hinges, the wheels falling off. Desperate to control this scourge, the answer is simple: fire. Bullets and other weapons work temporarily, but nothing works as well as fire. In fact, it soon becomes the law of all lands: every zombie, including individuals who recently passed away but haven't returned, must be burned, torched beyond all recognition. Those found burying bodies instead of burning them are treated as enemies. This is war, after all. But Pedro doesn't want to burn Carlos. Can't stand the thought of it. His wife, Carlos' mother, Sienna, was cremated two years before, her ashes scattered in her garden in their summer cottage in Maine. Those were her wishes, but Pedro has his own wishes for Carlos. Knowing full well the repercussions, Pedro wants to bury his child in Sienna's garden. Even in death, every boy needs his mother. However, the journey from Upstate New York to Maine will prove anything but easy. And least of all because someone has discovered the half-baked grave dug in Pedro's backyard. Someone not willing to let Pedro get away with something he himself had to do. Someone determined to force Pedro to feel the pain and anguish of burning a loved one, no matter the cost. A tribute to the love a father has for his son, Son ...

Early Film Culture in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Republican China: Kaleidoscopic Histories by Emilie Yueh-yu Yeh 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 4 minutes ago

This volume features new work on cinema in early twentieth-century Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Republican China. Looking beyond relatively well-studied cities like Shanghai, these essays foreground cinema's relationship with imperialism and colonialism and emphasize the rapid development of cinema as a sociocultural institution. These essays examine where films were screened; how cinema-going as a social activity adapted from and integrated with existing social norms and practices; the extent to which Cantonese opera and other regional performance traditions were models for the development of cinematic conventions; the role foreign films played in the development of cinema as an industry in the Republican era; and much more.

Such a Nice Guy by Phil Torcivia 4.6 Stars (32 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Strip an East Coast man in his forties of his marital obligations, transplant him into San Diego, and something funny happens. Enjoy 84 humorous anecdotes about relationships, love, sex, and lifestyles. Excerpt from Such a Nice Guy - The Walk of Shame I define this as the walk a woman takes from a man's residence to her car after a night of bumping nasties. Did this originate with the "Bridge of Sighs" in Venice? I sure hope not. After all, it doesn't come with a prison sentence. I find this walk hurtful (sniff) and I demand an apology on behalf of my scorned brothers. Why is the walk shameful? • If the neighbors see you, they will think you're slutty. • You're wearing the same clothes from last night (with an assortment of new pulls, wrinkles, and stains). • Your sobriety has exposed my flaws. When I leave a girl's house, I take the "walk of pride" because: • If the neighbors see me, they will think I'm stud-worthy, trustworthy, and responsible for all those funny noises they heard last night (except the sirens, usually). • My wearing the same clothes makes them more weathered looking, which is fashionable for dudes. • You're beautiful and my leaving after sunrise proves you're not a vampire. I will submit a Proposition P to have it renamed the "walk of pride" in the next election. In the meantime, you can park closer, leave before sunrise, dress like a meter maid, or drive a UPS truck.

Quigley Tree: A Novel by Linda A Lavid (Plum Barn Press) 4.7 Stars (31 Reviews)    Price verified 33 minutes ago

Quigley Tree drops out of college. At age 23, she's been a complete failure. If she doesn't do something soon, her life will careen into a deep, dark, irrevocable void. Tick Tock. That soon is now. From the publisher: Five-Star Review from Readers' Favorite by Lorraine Cobcroft: Quigley Tree, the protagonist of Linda A. Lavid's novel of the same name, is a young woman with an odd name. A college dropout from a dysfunctional home, and recently escaped from a relationship with a narcissist, Quigley needs to find a new place to live, quickly. A unique idea sets her on a path to find accommodation in a motel in exchange for providing marketing help, but she eventually must admit she has no idea what she is doing. She is a complete mess and has no faith in her ability to do anything useful with her life. Yet a kindly couple takes her on, and, with their help, and the help of an elderly lady she befriends, she begins to reshape her life and overcome her self-destructive attitude. Quirky is the best adjective to describe this work by Linda A. Lavid. Quigley Tree is as quirky as the protagonist's name. Q (as Quigley calls herself) grew on me and won me over. I empathized with her deep feelings of insecurity and her struggle to come to terms with a fractured family and a chaotic childhood. As the story progressed, there were poignant moments, and Lavid presented some interesting perspectives on life. There were also touches of whimsy in this tale of resilience and determination. In classic literary fiction style, Lavid focuses her novel on the character and theme rather than the plot. Quigley Tree, the story, ambles along at a leisurely pace, tracking Q's growth and gradual acceptance of herself and adjustment of her attitude toward her defective mother. Pearls of wisdom are scattered in conversations with her elderly friend, her employers, and the man who eventually wins her affection. The ending tempted me to shed a few tears, touched by Quigley's care for her toddler ...

Now, he works as a carpenter for a nonprofit that builds homes for disabled vets. In his spare time, he volunteers with a local cat rescue. But Luke's battling his own demons. He's haunted by the war. Specifically, by a fog of war experience -- a tragic accident -- that has left him racked with guilt. When Hope and Luke meet in a dingy alley, it's anything but love at first sight. But a near-fatal accident a week later forges a bond. Eventually, in the middle of a cold Baltimore winter, a romance heats up. Little-by-little, Hope and Luke help one another feel alive again. But Hope doesn't know how to process her past, a past that is now jeopardizing her future. And as she and Luke get closer, she questions whether she's worthy of love. Can two wounded, badly bruised, purple hearts come together and help one another heal? Purple Hearts is not for the faint of heart. It's as gritty as the city it's set in. Betting on Love (In Love series Vol. 2) (Italian Edition) by Penelope Plume 4.3 Stars (455 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Lui? Oh no... Nello stesso ufficio? Architecture of a Technodemocracy: How Technology and Democracy Can Revolutionize Governments, Empower the 100%, and End the 1% System by Jason M. Hanania 4.5 Stars (158 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

The world is primed for radical changes in government where each of us has an equal voice and all are held accountable. In Architecture of a Technodemocracy, Hanania provides a detailed blueprint on how to leverage current government processes, communications systems, and blockchain security to take the next step in the evolution of human government. By harnessing technology that already exists, we can nonviolently reshape our respective governments. The cooperation of modern politicians is not a requirement. A technodemocracy can be created without spending any tax dollars, passing any new laws, or otherwise turning to career politicians for leadership. Like Bitcoin, technodemocracy uses readily available technologies to decentralize power from the 1% to the 100%. Its principles can be applied to any nation. Despite being drafted more than 200 years ago, the Constitution enables a U.S. technodemocratic republic. No nation in history has ever had such an absolute straightaway to a 100% democratic government -- the opportunity to revolutionize society, economy, and environment without using violence. Through illustrations, examples, and analogies, Architecture of a Technodemocracy provides an elegantly simple method for decentralizing power to 100% of the American people and, in the process, ending the U.S. political party system. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jason M. Hanania is an attorney, an engineer, and a former U.S. government employee. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016 as the first technodemocratic candidate.

Louisiana Hotshot: A New Orleans Murder Mystery; Talba Wallis #1 (The Talba Wallis PI Series) by Julie Smith (booksBnimble Mysteries Thrillers and Suspense) 4.1 Stars (6,401 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

NOW AVAILABLE AS AN AUDIOBOOK "Can't wait for the next Evanovich? Louisiana Hotshot's Stephanie Plum with Tabasco, dawlin'." -The Clarion Ledger The FIRST book in the Talba Wallis series by Edgar-Award winning author Julie Smith WANTED: HOTSHOT P.I. WITH NEAR SUPER-HUMAN SKILLS. Confirmed grump Eddie Valentino placed the ad. Hotshot twenty-something Talba Wallis knew exactly how to answer it. And thus was born the dynamic duo of New Orleans private detectives -- one cynical, sixty-five-year-old Luddite white dude with street smarts, and one young, bright-eyed, Twenty-First century African-American female poet, performance artist, mistress of disguise, and computer jock extraordinaire. Think Queen Latifah and Danny DeVito. In Louisiana Hotshot, their job is to hunt down a sociopath and pedophile who's molested the fourteen-year-old daughter of their client, hangs out on the ragged edges of the rap and recording industries, and has more powerful allies than a Cabinet member. But both detectives have unfinished business from the past -- in Eddie's case, something he deeply regrets; in Talba's, a personal mystery, one so frightening no one will help her investigate. But she knows she won't sleep till she solves it -- and the truth will change her forever. "Smith generates plenty of tension as the savvy veteran and the eager novice combine their talents. But it is Smith's evocation of her beloved New Orleans and her deft exploration of her characters' intimate relationships that will lure readers to this series." -Publishers Weekly

Secondhand Smoke: A Wickedly Dark Comedy by Patty Friedmann 4.0 Stars (537 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

"A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES Meets THE CORRECTIONS in Friedmann's warm and wacky tale of family dysfunction and redemption" -- Library Journal "The outrageous developments and swift pace make this novel hard to resist." -Publishers Weekly JERUSHA'S POISON... ... to just about everyone--particularly her adult children. Fortunately, poison is the very superfood of the satirist. Patty Friedmann, the reigning queen of black comedy, hits one out of the park with her family straight out of Tolstoy--unhappy in its own way, a uniquely twisted Southern way. Meet the Baileys. Born and bred in a working class New Orleans neighborhood, Zib and Wilson think the thick cloud of cigarette smoke enveloping their mother is what probably killed their father. Certainly the toxicity of Jerusha's dark, cynical attitudes has driven her children far from the nest. Wilson has escaped to Chicago, married a woman who hates him, converted to Judaism, and become a decorated professor of Organic Evolution. Zib, almost forty, has made it only as far as the Florida Panhandle, where she's an assistant manager at the local Winn-Dixie, doomed to fending off a sleazy boss given to late night phone calls. Only one person, as isolated as she is, shows Jerusha any affection: Dustin Puglia, chubby, wise, and fearless, a ten-year-old living next door with a poisonous mother of his own. Although Wilson and Zib have forged independent lives away from their mother -- as well as each other -- their father's death brings them back together for a darkly droll, yet heart-wrenching round of domestic insanity. Does it remind you of AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY? Or THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS? Patty Friedmann got there first! And she's just as funny and observant as the authors of those splendid screenplays. Who Will Like It: Fans of off-beat dark comedies like AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, family dramas with a lot more humor than THE CORRECTIONS, the incomparable CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, and another ...

What a Nice Guy by Phil Torcivia 3.8 Stars (25 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

Do you know any nice guys? Perhaps you're married to or good friends with one. Well, consider the possibility that this nice guy is so frustrated with his relationship failures that he needs to vent to keep from turning into a bad boy with anger issues. Then, try not to spit hot coffee as you read his sarcastic rants about why men and women don't seem to fit. Excerpt from What a Nice Guy -- Snippity Doo Dah My initial vasectomy consultation is scheduled for today and I can't get this song out of my head: Snippity doo dah, snippity aye, My, oh my, what a wonderful day! None of my sperm is going to stray. Snippity doo dah, snippity aye. Mister blue balls getting older, No child support It's so practical. Everything's satisfactual! (Everbody now... ) Snippity doo dah, snippity aye, Rubberless feelings coming my way! If you're staring at this page with mouth agape, you're either my mother or a fertile woman. Men, can I have an amen? You betcha. Look, ladies, I turn fifty this year. I need offspring like I need square dancing lessons. If I were to have one of my little guys actually find an egg, that would make me almost seventy by the time Junior went to prom. I'd be riding my daughter down the aisle on my scooter. I've done the math. It costs $800, which is equivalent to twenty morning-after pills, two abortions, or a case of Silver Oak wine. I'll sacrifice the latter for peace of mind. It is also one-hundredth the cost of a college education, one-tenth the cost of a used car (plus repairs), and half the cost of outgrown sneakers. I know, I know. "You still need to wear condoms. What about STDs?" That's true (and it sucks), but it makes the whole process less stressful when breakage or slippage occurs. Actually, I think I've only had a rubber break once in my life. Slippage has happened numerous times. (OK, stop with the tiny penis jokes.) I'm sure we've all had that shocking/embarrassing moment when ole Willy leaves the party without his ...

Magic or Myth? Princess Honoria Ramadani is mere weeks away from marrying the man she loves, becoming a queen, and finally escaping the suffocating atmosphere of the Helish court. When an ominous prophecy threatens Ria's entire future, she's hesitant to put stock behind childish superstition. But with her parents' sudden, inexplicable illness and subsequent deaths, she can no longer deny that there are greater forces at work. The discovery of an antiquated law forces Ria to fight for both her life and the throne, pitting her against her vicious older sister. An ancient demon-summoning ritual -- which promises that any desire can be granted, for a price -- may be the only thing that can save Ria from certain death. But witchcraft is a finicky matter, and she soon finds herself magically bound to an arrogant demon who might cause more problems than he solves. There are worse terrors than demons lurking in the palace walls, however, and Ria will have to forge the unlikeliest of alliances if she wants to have any chance of surviving.

Spit (A Standalone Reverse Harem Paranormal Romance) by Michaela Haze 4.5 Stars (467 Reviews)    Price verified 12 hours ago

I'm cursed, and I have no one to blame but myself. My mama used to say I could con the pants off the Devil himself. That was markedly untrue. Years ago, as a young witch with a reckless streak, I summoned the King of Gluttony and tried to con the big bad. It didn't work, and instead of riches beyond my wildest dreams, I got a curse that makes every man that kisses me addicted beyond measure. Even a drop of my spit is enough. Mr. Bub, King of Gluttony and overall AH, has me on a tight leash. Just one more job, and he'll lift my curse. (So he says) The problem is... it's never just one more job. When the Steward of the Red City outside of Baton Rouge needs help, Beelzebub volunteers me for the job. I've got one week to find two demons that have gone missing in the city, or it's my neck on the chopping block. I don't think Mr. Bub will eat me if I fail, but I can't be sure. It's such a shame that Legion and his merry band of cocky men seem to have their sights set on distracting me from my task. I can't let anyone get close. Not even beautiful, if not annoying, demons. The second they taste me, they'll become addicted. The problem is: No one ever wants me; they only want the curse. **SPIT is a slow burn reverse harem, #whychoose paranormal romance with a happy ending. It is a standalone paranormal romance.**

Blood Moon: A Harry Chin Murder Mystery by Ralph Griffith 3.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 25 minutes ago

In Darwin, Australia in the Northwest Territories, crocodiles aren't the only predators lurking about. Inspector Harry Chin, and his partner, Ash Friday, a fierce Aboriginal detective with dark brooding eyes, are sent from Canberra to investigate the murder of an Australian Federal Police Officer, Peter Riggs. Riggs had been working undercover on an international heroin ring that seems to be coming in through the Port of Darwin. The officer had been found in his car dead from an overdose of heroin--the very drug that he had been investigating. Everything seems to be pointing to a heroin ring, but for Harry, something smells off. The scene reeks of staged tragedy, the victim's demise too tidy, too convenient. They soon find themselves knee-deep in their most perplexing case yet. Harry and Ash, the AFP's most elite investigative team, dive into Darwin's underbelly; a labyrinth of sun-bleached docks and neon-drenched alleys. As they dissect alibis and peel back layers of deceit, they encounter a kaleidoscope of suspects: a Russian crocodile farm, an Asian gangster running a dive called the Buddha Bar, double-crossing kingpins, and a femme fatale with secrets as sharp as her stilettos. It soon becomes apparent that the crocodiles aren't the only dangerous souls around.

The time is the early 1900s, and the place was deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where trails serve as roads, and the meek seldom dare to tread. Somewhere along the way, these individuals have discovered the flaw in a society that rewards greed and bias and seeks to punish those who only hope to find a better path. This is the story of one such family seeking a more fulfilling existence by avoiding most things the rest of us think define civilization. Over a period of weeks, an innocent young boy is transformed by adventure and tragedy into a young man. A mother's faith is tested by God, and a family reaches into the past to heal it's wounds.
