It is hard to even imagine a squad that won't change members every so often. But what if you aren't the type to move out of your comfort zone? What if it is hard for you to make new friends? You have to find a way to be able to gain the kind of friendships that would be lasting and meaningful. You have to find, make and grow your tribe. But all the experiences that you would have would give you a solid group of people who would be there willing to grow old with you and share their lives with you. And it would be all worth all the effort you put into it.

The Inn at Pearl Lake (Pearl Lake the Series Book 5) by Aquila Thorne 4.5 Stars (88 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

For the best readers experience books should be read in order starting with Moonlit Night as the series is not standalone. It doesn't take long to find out that some rumors are true... After moving next door to her sister in Pearl Lake, nurse Kim Petersen finds working at the village clinic is about as fun as watching paint dry, but it has its perks. She meets Dean Goodbody, a handsome ex-US Marshall whose body does match his name. He can verbally spar with her like no other all while making her heart go aflutter. When Dean buys an old decrepit manor that overlooks the lake, he asks Kim if she wants to move in. Despite the talk around the village that it's haunted, she reluctantly accepts. Kim has an agenda. She needs to convince Dean that she is a short, delightful mix of plump and sass; the perfect woman for him. A little hard to do when Dean, being the sexy man that he is has more secrets than Area 51. What's a girl to do? Will she be able to convince Dean he's in love with her before the ghosts of the manor chase her away? Hey all, it's Kim. I'm letting you know that there is a bit of cussing in this book. More than a bit, actually. It's me after all. Other than that there are a few ghosts, nothing really to trigger anyone. So if you're good with the odd swear word, no f-bombs, well, there is one. But I didn't say it, Mark did and in his defense, it was totally warranted. That's it, I promise and you should like it just fine.

The Impossible Shore by Robert Kee 4.1 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

For Johnny Clay, an English soldier in a German prison camp, the freedom which lay with the American forces on the western side of the Elbe River seemed an impossible shore. Yet, with the single-mindedness of all prisoners, he believed that once out of confinement he would be free and the world would be a wonderful place in which to live. An illusion shattered when Russian tanks cut through the barbed wire of Hügeldorf and Johnny finds himself "liberated" into the chaotic world of the Russian military. Rather than wait for official transportation, Johnny and fellow Englishman, Guy Rankin, set out secretly for the west shore of the Elbe, a countryside neither at war nor peace. Having been imprisoned for so long, both Johnny and Guy forget the outside world is not the one they knew and are blocked at every turn until they are taken into custody by Nikolai, an unpredictable Russian commandant. Forcibly quartered with Herr Kermbach and his daughter Charlotte, this arrangement would simultaneously bring peace and devastation for both Johnny and Guy. The Impossible Shore is a vivid and unforgettable story about the human consequences of war and one man's desperate attempts to gain the shore of personal happiness and freedom from uncertainty. Perfect for fans of Birdsong and Pat Barker's Regeneration Trilogy. Praise for The Impossible Shore: '... at once subtle and simple, articulate and bold. His intellectual fearlessness makes him not hesitate to record fears' - Elizabeth Bowen in The Tatler 'To say that this is the best novel I have read for a long time is faint praise' - L. A. G. Strong in The Spectator 'Unlike many novelists of the post-war generation, [Robert Kee] appears to possess a natural gift... exceedingly vivid... admirably told' - Peter Quennell in The Daily Mail 'As reportage, the story is exceptional, a pattern of events seen with perceptive and sensitive eyes' - Kirkus Review Born in 1919, Robert Kee has a history degree from ...

Arrest the Bishop? by Winifred Peck 4.0 Stars (169 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

He caught the back of a chair, staggered and groaned. There was a heavy crash and fall, and the parson lay motionless and livid, while lilies from a vase fell, like a wreath, across his chest. The Rev. Ulder, everyone agreed, was the parish priest from hell. In addition to tales of drunkenness and embezzlement, the repellent cleric had recently added blackmail to his list of depravities. There was scandal in the district, plenty of it, and Ulder had the facts. Until, that is, a liberal helping of morphia, served to him in the Bishop's Palace, silenced the insufferable priest - for good. Was it the Bishop himself who delivered the fatal dose? Was it Soames, the less-than-model butler? Or one of a host of other inmates and guests in the house that night, with motives of their own to put Ulder out of the way? Young Dick Marlin, ex-military intelligence and now a Church deacon, finds himself assisting Chief Constable Mack investigate murder most irreverent. Arrest the Bishop? was first published in 1949. This new edition, the first in many decades, includes a new introduction by crime fiction historian Martin Edwards.

The Hell-Kites by Michael Sichok Price verified 3 hours ago

Flesh and bone, or polished stone, life is but a dream; with the rising sun, sleepers awaken, leaving their dreams behind, as it always has been. However, what if those dreams were unable to end? What if something interrupted the wake-up call, or for that matter, who is to even say that when we fall asleep, we awaken as the same person, in the same time and place from which we left the night before? Going a step further, if you were to die in your dreams, which part of you ceases to exist from one world and time, while another awakens and flourishes somewhere else? Does then, the dream last forever? Is life truly but a dream? Twentieth-century Harley and fourteenth-century Anna have a problem; caught amongst their fantasies, they are unable to return from where they've fell asleep, as their worlds have collapsed. Far from being in "limbo," these two find new lives in each other, within the broken context of time. However, and as they'll soon learn, neither time, nor space and distance exist in these new lives. After all, sometimes what we know fails us, due to our romanticizing the past, or for that matter, the future. Memories then create splintering realities, far removed from daily life, and as we find ourselves unable (or unwilling) to wake up, our fantasies run wild, revealing our true nature. In this sexy, entirely 80s, genre-bending romantic adventure, passion, imagination and mystery abound, ensuring that this will be a dream that you'll never want to wake from, even if you could. Well, if you can manage to keep the big, black birds away, that is. Following in the high standards of the Stary Trilogy (Nadeyat'sya, Neizbezhnyy and Natsionalist), The Hell-Kites again nukes the proverbial fiction battlefield. A story of lust and love, both ridiculous and profound, dazzling and cheesy, the Hell-Kites serves as complex contrast; night and day, our world and the next, Skinamax and cold, howling winds across bitter landscape. It is achingly deep as it is ...

Why Did He Bother?: A Pastor's Account of God's Abundant Mercy, Love, and Grace by Allen Bujno 4.6 Stars (44 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

This is a unique, humorous, inspirational, encouraging, faith-building, faith-challenging story of endurance, perseverance, and reconciliation. It will make you laugh and it will make you think. Why does God bother to do the things He does in our lives? Why doesn't He just let us keep believing what we were believing, keep doing the things we were doing, continually making mistakes and using bad judgment? I believe God puts people into our lives on purpose; To strengthen us, to encourage us, to teach us, to correct us, to stop us and to point us in the right direction so we can become who we are and all we were created to be. The following stories are an attempt to show the extraordinary lengths the Lord went through, the situations I encountered, the people whose paths crossed my life and the key, often humorous, moments that occurred to teach me, to correct me, to stop me or point me in the right direction. People kept telling me to wtite these stories down. Well, I finally have.

Cryptography in World War I: The History of the Efforts to Make and Break Secret Codes during the Great War by Charles River Editors Price verified 5 hours ago

World War I stood apart in many ways from earlier wars, not least in the way that it reached to nearly every corner of the planet and involved a noticeable segment of humanity's collective resources. Battles erupted not only on land and the sea's surface as they had for centuries, but also in the ocean depths and the windswept heights of the sky. Nearly every conceivable terrain saw use as a battlefield: the neat farmland and small towns of Western Europe; the streets of major cities; thick forests; open steppes stretching for hundreds of miles; deserts in Africa; rugged mountain ranges; and many other regions of the globe. But one of the war's most crucial struggles happened in the realm of the unseen, inside the human mind and amid the invisible flow of radio waves. Every war is a battle of wits as intelligence-gathering, tactics, and strategies clash, from the level of individual action up to the grand, overarching schemes of generals and statesmen. Intelligence took on a freshly urgent aspect in the Great War, however, as the fates of offensives, armies, and nations came to hang on the struggle to decrypt vital enemy radio traffic and military communications. World War I was also the first major conflict in which new electronic means of transmitting and receiving messages became a major factor in political and military operations. The electric telegraph was developed in the first half of the 19th century, and by 1850, there were several telegraph companies around the world providing a service that allowed virtually instantaneous communication over long distances. This was a major breakthrough, but the telegraph depended on the availability of wires to transmit messages between stations, meaning that if these wires were broken or damaged, communications were cut off. Late in the 19th century, there was another new development, the telephone, though this too relied on wires to transmit and receive information. At the same time, there was a new invention that ...

Desperate Journey: Escape from Burma in 1942, through 900 miles of arduous, Japanese-occupied territory by Francis Clifford (Lume Books) 4.5 Stars (320 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

"This is a story of escape; a true account of how a dwindling group of soldiers made their way to safety through nearly a thousand miles of Japanese-occupied territory in the teeth of the monsoon." On 20th April 1942, Captain Thompson received word that the defensive line held by their Chinese allies had broken; orders or no orders, he knew they had to move. Separated from the rest of the Burma Army and weary from months of continuous fighting retreats, the survivors of his Karen Company began their long walk northwards. In the suffocating Burmese jungle the days turned to weeks, the weeks into months, and all the while the mental decay kept pace with their physical deterioration. And yet, with such indomitable men as Subedar-Major Kan Choke and Subedar Ba Gyaw at Thompson's side, his Company clung to each other and endured. When Fort Hertz finally came into view in August, the journey of nine hundred miles and untold maladies had left many of them little more than walking skeletons. Written in 1944 but remaining unseen for over thirty years, Desperate Journey is an extraordinary true story of human endeavour, of faith, courage, tenacity and mutual trust in the face of insurmountable odds. Praise for Francis Clifford: 'Not since Graham Greene was creating his adventures has there been a writer with such haunting quality, the sweet sound of sad beauty, which Clifford engenders' - New York Herald Tribune 'Mr. Clifford constructs an anatomy of fear, drawing in with fine, sharp lines the exposed and shrinking nerves' - The Times Francis Clifford is a pen name of Arthur Leonard Bell Thompson , a British writer of crime and thriller novels. He was born in Bristol, served with great distinction in the Second World War, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

To Live Or Maybe Not by Gary Revel Price verified 8 hours ago

Playing poker in a Southern Juke Joint was not the typical activity of a 10 year- old boy, but for Gary Revel it was. His mother and father divorced when he was 5. Music became a friend and he formed his first Rock & Roll band when he was 15. After graduation from Holmes Country High School in Bonifay, Florida he enlisted in the United States Navy. His years in the Navy were dangerous but prepared him for more danger later on. His Honorable Discharge came and Hollywood, California called, then New York, Memphis, Nashville and back to Hollywood. He lived in Hollywood and Los Angeles California for over 30 years. He wrote and recorded the song "They Slew the Dreamer". The new mix dropped recently and is bringing new light to the subject of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Along the way Gary Revel investigated the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in association with the US Government's HSCA - House Select Committee on Assassinations. Danger, intrigue and murder followed as he began to unravel the truth and connections between the killing of MLK, JFK, RFK and more. Six Foolish Companions: Loosely A Story And Loosely About Game Theory by Isaac Imins? Price verified 8 hours ago

Six Foolish Companions is a book that's loosely a story and loosely about game theory, and you could probably guess, but there are six companions in it, and they're all kind of foolish. The book is loosely a story in that the events do loosely form a sort of story, but not really, and the events are really just kind of random, and there's no real plot. The book is loosely about game theory in that in every chapter (except the last one) the companions are in some kind of situation that at least loosely resembles the kinds of games you find in game theory, and they can get gold coins from these situations, and that's really the main point of the book, I guess, because at the end of each chapter (again, except for the last one. That one just shows what everyone did with their gold) everyone's current number of coins is shown, and it's not like it's stated that whoever has the most gold by the end is the winner, but it's totally that whoever has the most gold by the end is the winner. That was probably clear enough, but just to be extra clear within the book there's no big game theory competition that everyone's trying to win or anything like that, and it's not like whoever has the most gold at the end will be acknowledged as the winner; it's just that we, the readers, know that whoever has the most gold is totally the winner. Of course despite the above, in real life money isn't important like that, and being rich doesn't make you a winner. Anyway, the author's intent when writing this book was something like to give each character a personality, set up some games, and then let events unfold naturally, without knowing or planning out ahead of time who would win or anything like that, but that's not really what happened, because the author kind of cheated on certain parts of the book (meaning he manipulated how they would go and stuff like that) to do things like make it more interesting or whatever, and there was at least one event (the ending of chapter ...

The Auschwitz Chapter (Under Total Eclipse We Will Tremble Like Birds Without Song) by Lee Vidor (Shakespeare-X Publications) 4.2 Stars (203 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

The Auschwitz Chapter is an historically complete, precise and definitive account of what took place at Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, where crimes against humanity were perpetrated by Nazis against Jews, Slavs, Roma, political prisoners, homosexuals, and artists. And all humanity. This Auschwitz Chapter is taken from Lee Vidor's novel, Under Total Eclipse We Will Tremble Like Birds Without Song, which is an historically accurate fictional account of Europe under Nazi Occupation. Even though The Auschwitz Chapter is only a concise single chapter in the novel, more than 2 years were spent researching every existing published eyewitness account of imprisonment at Auschwitz, in order to ensure complete accuracy. It is not suitable for reading by those under 18 years of age. Many more reviews of Lee Vidor books can be found at http://www.goodreads.com/author/list/4938461.Lee_Vidor Lee Vidor states: 'I believe I missed no eyewitness testimonies and that the account here given is absolutely accurate in every detail. It is the most specific and accurate description of events and processes at Auschwitz which exists. Every single detail in The Auschwitz Chapter has been confirmed from more than one eyewitness source, from photographic evidence and court documents. I believe it is the single most reliable and harrowing piece of literary writing ever done on the subject of the events which took place in the Nazi concentration camps during World War II.' Although fictional, the piece contains many precise facts which are extremely difficult to uncover and which are coherently gathered together nowhere else with such accuracy and completeness. Herein lies its enduring value. The Auschwitz Chapter is available for publication, completely free of charge, to all academic text book publishers anywhere in the world, who wish to publish it unedited in an educational text. Thirteen Times That the Lord Has Spoken Directly to My Heart by James Thomas Lee Jr Price verified 8 hours ago

What I am about to say might sound confusing. But it is not meant to be. First, this book is about me. But second, it is NOT about me. In the following pages, I will share thirteen times from my life when the Lord had spoken directly to me. For the first three times, I had NOT known what was happening. For the last ten times plus one, I had been fully aware of what was happening. So in that sense, this book is about me. It will share fourteen experiences from my life. But this book is not really about me because the goal is to show how anyone can have the same kind of close personal relationship with the Lord that I have had. There are certain things that anyone can do to bring himself or herself into the Lord's presence. Hopefully by the time that the reader has gotten to the end of the final chapter, some fresh ideas will come to mind about how to make that relationship happen. I have wanted to write this book for a very long time. So maybe, this will be my final book. But as always, my desire has been to bring praise, honor, and glory to the Lord. He is worthy because of all that He does and has done for those who have come to Him.

A Short Guide to the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (2024 Edition) (Popular Astronomy) by The Science Geek 4.4 Stars (16 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Is there anyone out there? The question of whether or not alien intelligent life exists elsewhere in the Universe has fascinated mankind for hundreds of years. Until relatively recently, this was merely the stuff of science fiction, but since the middle of the twentieth century astronomers have been able to seriously investigate the possibility of there being other civilisations out there, civilisations with whom we could make contact, instead of just speculating. SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, is a branch of astronomy actively engaged with detecting signs that we are not alone. This book tells the story of this search.

QUANTUM THEORY OF SURFACES by AGUSTIN CONCA GIL 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 9 hours ago

This unique work is a speculative theory that aims to complete and unify all physical phenomena. By completing the reading of this book and after constructive reflection, the reader will have the opportunity to understand all quantum phenomena in a complete way, and with it, understand gravity, time and their relationships and interactions with matter, obtaining in this way , the unprecedented ability to manipulate time and space in a tangible and truly possible way. Currently and as I write these lines, there is no contained hypothesis that makes it possible to travel great astronomical distances immediately, and there is no theory that really explains what time is and how it works, and none that can support a technology with which we will achieve build medical machines that in a local and controlled way, are capable of reversing the arrow of time, allowing us to carry out preconceived reconstructive transformations, unthinkable until now. This work, contained in a few pages, is undoubtedly the most important universal field of reference for the human species, as it provides the power for man to be the master of his own destiny and and be your own author.

How to Start a Band: An Essential Guide to Starting a Band, Branding Your Style, Landing Gigs, and Attracting Fans - ( How to Make a Band | How to ... by Micah Nichol 4.1 Stars (16 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

If you're thinking of starting a band and you want to learn what it takes to manage a band and catapult yourself and fellow musicians to stardom, then this book is for you! Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or Kindle device. Are you a talented musician who's looking to put together a band and -- with any luck -- rise to stardom, be paid to perform in front of a live audience, and even hear your music on the radio? Have you considered though that this effort is going to take more than just a group of musicians? While musicians often move people with their euphonious offerings, it's rare that they have a level-headed business mindset too, so for that reason it's critical to designate one person who can act as motivator, counselor, and business advisor all rolled into one. These functions are typically provided by a dedicated manager, who also acts as an accountant, a sales person and spokesperson, a public relations officer and legal aid, and whatever else the band may need them to be at the drop of a hat. Without the right person performing these functions, your band won't get much further than your parents' garage. The good news is that, starting out, you can actually operate as your own band manager for a while. At least until your band becomes a household name and you can't even go to the grocery store without being asked for an autograph. No matter how hot your music is, the management of the band is what will ultimately determine your success. So if you're up for the challenge of wearing two hats -- one as musician, and the other as manager -- I encourage you to learn exactly what it takes to manage your band and actively seek out your band's popularity and financial success. This book is designed to teach you everything you need to know about putting together and managing a band. Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn... • Finalizing the Talent • Band Management Must Haves • How to Land Live Gigs • Other Paths to Fame and ...
