DAHOMEY : The True Story Behind The Kingdom That Inspired The Woman King (Black History Series) by Vivian Chibuife 3.4 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

UPDATED EDITION BLACK HISTORY Africa has long been a stunningly scenic, intellectually gifted, and culturally varied continent. Many stories describe the history of the African people, including their development, difficulties, setbacks, and tenacious advancement. The African Kingdom of Dahomey was founded in the seventeenth century in the West African portion of the continent, and throughout the 1700s and 1800s, it became wealthy and strong thanks to the slave trade. The area is now Benin's southernmost region. There was a social class structure in Dahomey. At the very top was the king. The royal class stood under him, then commoners, and last slaves. One male and one female employee had a position in every government office. The ladies gave the king an update after checking on the men. The mighty army of Dahomey included women as well. In the 1600s, the Alladah monarchy gave birth to the kingdom of Dahomey. At this period, European slave traffickers were already traveling along the Atlantic coast. Dahomeans started enslaving members of other tribes. They traded guns and other items for the prisoners by selling them to slave traffickers. They also had their slaves. Large plantations where these slaves toiled produced food for the royal palace and the soldiers. Throughout the 1700s, the empire became more powerful and expansive. Dahomey began exporting palm oil rather than slaves in the 1800s when the slave trade was abolished in Great Britain and other nations. Dahomey was taken over by France towards the end of the 1800s. It was united with other areas to create a colony that the French dubbed Dahomey. In 1960, this colony became independent. Up until 1975, it was known as Dahomey before changing its name to Benin. This is the tale of the Dahomey Kingdom. This book will teach you more about: THE KINGDOM OF DAHOMEY • Rise and expansion of the Empire (1600-1740) • A localized power (1740-1852) • Abolishing the slave trade (1852-1880) • ...

Diary of a Mormon Marine in Vietnam: by Alma L. Day by Alma Day 4.1 Stars (18 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Experiences of Alma Day, a Mormon during the Vietnam War 1966 to 1968 who shares his perspective of warfare while actively staying true to his religious convictions and while serving with war-hardened Marines where violence and vice surrounded all. Alma miraculously survives a close-range grenade attack and, after recovering, heroically chose to return to Vietnam when given the option to stay in the United States to finish his service. When he returned to Vietnam, he was assigned to serve with the "Fighting Fifth", First Battalion, Fifth Marines, the most highly decorated regiment in the Marine Corps and documents how he survived, on the prayers of his family back home, the Battle of Hue, one of the bloodiest and longest battles of the Vietnam War. Alma also shares the experiences of a few other Marines who did not make it back to have their honorable service properly documented. The realities of war are thoroughly, yet delicately described to give the reader a sense of what transpired without offending your sensibilities. Below are a few excerpts from the book: "Our Judo teacher told us how he killed several Koreans with his bare hands, and how he enjoyed watching the men die in slow agony. Most of the men acted interested. When he screamed, "Kill! Kill! Kill!" they responded like Hitler's hysterical audiences. I wonder what these men will do in Vietnam. Natural charm and creativeness seems distant and dead to them... I decided that never again would I point an accusing finger at some far-off Nazi regime, as being the prime example of barbarism. The seeds of the same vicious contempt for our enemies are in our very ranks today." "... I walked closer to see what the young mothers were bending over. They were rocking back and forth in a weeping incantation. No one could comfort them. I could see the little bodies that our two short rounds had killed as they played. How small they lay! Oh, such tiny forms, still soft from life they played in ...

Stamping American Memory: Collectors, Citizens, and the Post (Digital Humanities) by Sheila Brennan 3.6 Stars (9 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Winner of the University of Michigan Press / Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC) Prize for Notable Work in the Digital Humanities In the age of digital communications, it can be difficult to imagine a time when the meaning and imagery of stamps was politically volatile. While millions of Americans collected stamps from the 1880s to the 1940s, Stamping American Memory is the first scholarly examination of stamp collecting culture and how stamps enabled citizens to engage their federal government in conversations about national life in early-twentieth-century America. By examining the civic conversations that emerged around stamp subjects and imagery, this work brings to light the role that these underexamined historical artifacts have played in carrying political messages. Sheila A. Brennan crafts a fresh synthesis that explores how the US postal service shaped Americans' concepts of national belonging, citizenship, and race through its commemorative stamp program. Designed to be saved as souvenirs, commemoratives circulated widely and stood as miniature memorials to carefully selected snapshots from the American past that also served the political needs of small interest groups. Stamping American Memory brings together the histories of the US postal service and the federal government, collecting, and philately through the lenses of material culture and memory to make a significant contribution to our understanding of this period in American history.

The year is 1942. The world is at war. Almost every major nation has declared for the Allies or the Axis. Europe is occupied by the Third Reich, and the British Islands have been invaded and conquered by the Germans. Metropolitan France has fallen, along with its North African colonies. Spain and Turkey have joined the Axis. The Middle East is Axis. The USA and Soviet Russia are also at war with the Third Reich. Only one major power is still on the sideline. Imperial Japan, already busy in its war of conquest in China, dawns to the idea of conquering the Pacific and Southeast Asia, following German successes in Europe and the subsequent weakening of the resource-rich Franco-British and Dutch colonies. The United States, following Japan's occupation of the French colony of French Indo-China in 1940, froze all of Tokyo's assets, stopped scrap metals deliveries, and is just about to stop delivering oil to the hungry Japanese military machine. A move certain to trigger a reaction from the warmongers in Tokyo. President Roosevelt's decision to do so is about to have dire consequences for America. The Imperial Navy has set its sight on the main US base in the Pacific, Pearl Harbor. And all across the Japanese-held islands of the Pacific, the forces of the Rising Sun prepare for a full-scale invasion that they hope will give them control over the resources the country needs to continue on its expansion. This is the story of the War in the Pacific.

The History of America: A concise history of the story of The Unites States of America from George Washington to Jimmy Carter. by Nehal Kaur Price verified 11 hours ago

An outsider's perspective reveals the United States as a country of unrivalled influence and generosity. It has accomplished exploits that have irrevocably influenced the path of human events in its comparatively limited but storied history. Most significantly, its dramatic World War II action helped to liberate millions of people from the grip of tyranny by overthrowing Adolf Hitler's evil regime. In addition to serving as a haven on the battlefield, the United States has provided food and shelter to countless people who were fleeing hardship. Its charitable activities go far beyond its national borders; through enormous humanitarian help, it has lessened suffering and aided in the development of nations in remote regions of the world. The country is not without faults; occasionally, its feeling of exceptionalism leads to divisive foreign policy, but overall, the effects of its activities lean strongly in favour of the advancement of humanity. The United States is still a powerful force for good in a complex world. So, for the nation that fought off Hitler's armies, saved the world, and has generally been a country that has been a source of good more than any other nation in world history, whether you are a smart kid looking for a broad overview of America up to the time of Jimmy Carter or whether you are a curious adult who is just trying to learn more about the history of this country, I hope you enjoy reading this modest effort to summarise "The History of America."

Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 (Cultures Of Knowledge In The Early Modern World) by Jonathan Green (University of Michigan Press) 5.0 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe's earliest known printed book---not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl's Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page---over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers' reactions along approved paths. Authors were packaged---and packaged themselves---in word and image to respond to the tension, while leading figures of early modern culture such as Paracelsus, Martin Luther, and Sebastian Brant used printed prophecies for their own purposes in a rapidly changing society. Based on a wide reading of many sources, Printing and Prophecy contributes to the study of early modern literature, including how print changed the relationship among authors, readers, and texts. The prophetic and astrological texts the book examines document changes in early modern society that are particularly relevant to German studies and are key texts for understanding the development of science, religion, and popular culture in the early modern period. By combining the methods of cultural studies and book history, this volume brings a new perspective to the study of Gutenberg and later printers.

The Lost City of Antarctica, Ancient Earth’s First Civilization by M.G. Hawking 3.1 Stars (27 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Explore Evidence of an Ancient Lost City on the Antarctic Continent. For decades the archaeological community labored under the theory that human civilization began only following the last Ice Age. Contemporary discoveries have dramatically undermined that conjecture. Modern research has unearthed hidden cities one after another -- archaeology now reconstructs an unsuspected antiquity of man and paints a canvas of stunningly mysterious dimensions. Previous academic accounts of the origins of civilization have fallen forfeit to evidence from archaeological sites worldwide, including Thebes (c. 37,900 BC), Edfu (c. 18,000 BC), Turkey (c. 12,000 BC), Bolivia (c. 15,000 BC), Indonesia (c. 22,000 BC), and most intriguingly, in Antarctica. To explore these remarkable finds and their implications, the explorations in this book are organized as follows: ? Part I: The Ancient Civilizations -- Provides archaeological background and information regarding the pre-Younger Dryas Boundary event civilizations, circa 10,770 BC or earlier, and the known cataclysmic astronomical events that eradicated most evidence of prehistoric civilization from the historical record. Examines the ancient traditions and extant evidence of the accomplishments and technology of currently known ancient cultures. ? Part II: A Very Ancient City in Antarctica -- Provides a detailed account of the satellite imaging evidence for the remains of an extensive Paleocene civilization existing under the ice of Antarctica, including "intelligently-made structures, resembling some sort of pyramidal and rectangular buildings." Also examines the ice-core derived, isotopic record from the Paleogene and Neogene geologic periods indicating that the infrastructure of an advanced civilization existed on the Antarctic continent approximately 55.5 million years ago, and may have been inhabited for 300,000 or more years. Examines additional evidence of anomalous high-energy particles emitting from the Antarctic ice ...

The State Knows Best: How Corruption Destroyed Our Law Enforcement and Left Americans Defenseless by Connor Vasile 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 3 hours ago

America is falling. Thanks to bureaucratic incompetence and spineless politicians who bend to social justice bullies, Americans are left with a government that doesn't care about them, their safety, or their future. To add insult to injury, the same people who couldn't be bothered to increase patrols in our neighborhoods, crack down on rising violent crime, and actually keep criminals locked behind bars, are fighting to take away our right to self-defense. Left without any means to protect ourselves, America will start to look like a third-world country. From the Summer of Love riots in 2020 to continuing efforts at lowering already mediocre police training requirements, we've seen our public officials concern themselves more with optics than with the people's safety. While activists and politicians capitalize on select instances of police brutality and call for the defunding and abolishment of police as a whole, Americans are made victims by career criminals who are practically ignored by our "equitable" legal system. As the political elite pat each other on the back while making a mockery of law and order, innocent bystanders, and even children, are robbed and killed at the hands of violent criminals every single day. We're reaching a tipping point. Something has to change. The future of America depends on it.

DEAR MISS DORIS: LETTERS FROM THE PAST - A WWII CHRONOLOGY by Peter Deleuran 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

This is the third book in the series 'Letters From The Past'. It presents 105 letters written during WWII by Richard Moyer to Doris Kincaid, spanning from June 23, 1944, through to December 20, 1945. Three additional letters from April 1954, are also included after they married. All three books are based on real letters, written by real people in a time of great peril. The juxtaposition between the tender love expressed, often enhanced by the deprivation of proximity, and the horrors of WWII, is tangible in every letter. Richard Moyer was 18 when he enlisted in the Navy on September 1, 1943. The Navy sent him to a six-week electrician school and he volunteered for submarine duty. While stationed at the submarine base in New London, Connecticut, he met Doris on leave in April 1944. Shortly after, Richard was shipped to the Pacific Theatre. These letters are a unique view into the minds of the people who were part of The Greatest Generation. They describe in detail their fears and passions, their anxieties, and hopes. Surrender: How the Clinton Administration Completed the Reagan Revolution by Michael Allen Meeropol 4.3 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Michael Meeropol argues that the ballooning of the federal budget deficit was not a serious problem in the 1980s, nor were the successful recent efforts to get it under control the basis for the prosperous economy of the mid-1990s. In this controversial book, the author provides a close look at what actually happened to the American economy during the years of the "Reagan Revolution" and reveals that the huge deficits had no negative effect on the economy. It was the other policies of the Reagan years--high interest rates to fight inflation, supply-side tax cuts, reductions in regulation, increased advantages for investors and the wealthy, the unraveling of the safety net for the poor--that were unsuccessful in generating more rapid growth and other economic improvements. Meeropol provides compelling evidence of the failure of the U.S. economy between 1990 and 1994 to generate rising incomes for most of the population or improvements in productivity. This caused, first, the electoral repudiation of President Bush in 1992, followed by a repudiation of President Clinton in the 1994 Congressional elections. The Clinton administration made a half-hearted attempt to reverse the Reagan Revolution in economic policy, but ultimately surrendered to the Republican Congressional majority in 1996 when Clinton promised to balance the budget by 2000 and signed the welfare reform bill. The rapid growth of the economy in 1997 caused surprisingly high government revenues, a dramatic fall in the federal budget deficit, and a brief euphoria evident in an almost uncontrollable stock market boom. Finally, Meeropol argues powerfully that the next recession, certain to come before the end of 1999, will turn the predicted path to budget balance and millennial prosperity into a painful joke on the hubris of public policymakers. Accessibly written as a work of recent history and public policy as much as economics, this book is intended for all Americans interested in issues of economic ...

Children have been indiscriminately killed, Young men have had their lives terminated before they have had the chance to live their lives to the full. War orphans abound. Widows and Widowers weep at their spouses' graves. Grand Parents have lost generations of their families. Whole communities have been destroyed and villages razed to the ground. I have lived in The Middle East for twenty five years now and the constant undercurrent of these conflicts is ever present. I remember reading one news report that said that an entire village and its inhabitants were destroyed after a wedding celebration resulted in the village men firing their riflles into the air, a long tradition in village celebrations, it was viewed as an act of aggression and the village and inhabitants were all destoyed. I kept hearing words such as "Collateral Damage", "Carpet Bombing etc, words used by the media to deflect the true horror of the reality of war.It was at this time that I began to have troubled dreams and horrific nightmares about what was really happening in these theatres of war..These vision like dreams inspired me to write the stories that are contained in this work. The messages in these stories are not just relevant to The Middle East but to the world at large.

Greek Mythology: An Enthralling Overview of Greek Myths, Gods, and Goddesses (Greek Mythology and History) by Enthralling History 4.4 Stars (195 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Greek mythology influences us today. For instance, did you know that the famous athletic brand Nike comes from the Greek goddess of victory? Greek mythology has, without a doubt, some of the most well-known legends in the world. Like most people, the Olympians had their fair share of family drama. This book pays strict attention to the genealogy of the Greek gods and the relationships they had with one another, whether they were good, bad, or incestuous. These divine beings gifted humanity joy and despair, and the ancient peoples of Greece and other countries related their own world to the actions of the gods. However, the gods and Titans were all corporeal and capable of physical interaction with humanity. They were no different than the dirt on the ground or the clouds in the sky. They could be seen and touched -- especially touched, given their numerous children produced from unions with gods and demi-gods alike. The heavy amount of interaction that humans had with the gods and goddesses in Greek mythology allowed them to make sense of the world order in which they found themselves. It was a constant reminder that all beings in the heavens, earth, and below were all cogs of the same system. In this book, you will discover: • The intriguing relationships between gods, men, demi-gods, and monsters • The connection between divinity and weakness. Not only men make mistakes; even seemingly perfect beings screw up regularly. • The importance of love as a guiding force of nature and life in general • A practical understanding of the motivations of both men and gods behind their less-than-honorable actions • How hard work might end in tragedy • The importance of family in Greek mythology • And much more!

Norse Mythology: An Enthralling Overview of Norse Myths, Gods, and Goddesses (Scandinavia) by Enthralling History 4.5 Stars (157 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Did you know that Loki is the father of the monstrous creatures that are prophesied to kill the gods of Asgard? When Heimdall blows his horn to signal the beginning of Ragnarök, the gods of Asgard are left with no choice but to face the forces of chaos on the battlefield of Vigrid. This is when Loki and his monstrous sons, Jörmungandr the World Serpent and Fenrir the Giant Wolf, will exact their revenge, a mission they will succeed in, although it will cost their lives. On this day, everyone, including the mightiest of gods, will spill blood on the battlefield. The entire world will perish, leaving only an empty void for life to happen all over again. The stories and myths of the Norse were passed down by the Vikings in oral tradition until they were recorded in manuscripts by anonymous authors in the mid-13th century. The myths that survived tell the story of how the world was first created by the gods using the dead body of a primeval giant, the existence of the different realms surrounding the universe, and various tales and lore about the gods' adventures. Some might suggest that Norse myths take place in a rather gloomy universe, where the lands are filled with endless snow, bleak summers, and vicious wars, while there are also others who imagine the fortified city of the gods as someplace glimmering with gold and towering palaces. But which one of these is true? Since these myths were originally circulated orally and the only written sources that survived are missing some pages, it could be hard for curious readers to find a source that correctly retells the intriguing legends and stories of the Norse gods. But that is about to change. In this new Enthralling History book, you will discover all the famous tales surrounding the Norse gods and goddesses, from amusing ones to the stories that will leave you at the edge of your seat. Here's just a small fraction of what you'll discover: • How the body of the primeval giant, Ymir, was used to shape the ...

The Incas and Spanish Conquest: An Enthralling Overview of the Inca Empire, Conquistadors, and Conquests in the Americas (Exploring the Past) by Billy Wellman 4.0 Stars (29 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Two manuscripts in one book: • The Inca Empire: An Enthralling Overview of the Incas, Their Civilization in Ancient Peru, and the Spanish Conquest • The Spanish Conquest of the Americas: An Enthralling Overview of the Conquistadors and Their Conquests of the Aztec and Inca Empires For the Incas, death didn't exist; it simply took the dead to a different plane of life. So, the mummies of their emperors were treated as people; they were given food and drink and even visited each other ceremoniously. They also owned country estates, which generated enough profits to keep them in the style to which they were accustomed. In the first part of this book, you will discover: • How the Inca civilization developed out of a number of preceding cultures in the Andes and Peruvian coast; • How quickly the Incas were able to expand and why they needed to; • How the empire was administered and how runners were able to take messages from one end of it to the other with remarkable speed; • The amazing Inca infrastructure program, which included building roads through mountain ranges and across raging rivers; • Why Inca cuisine included tasty guinea pigs and llama jerky; • Why there were never more than a few thousand actual Inca in the Inca Empire; • The religion and beliefs of the Inca and how they developed over time to support the empire's mission; • How just a couple of hundred Spanish adventurers managed to conquer and subdue the Inca Empire; • How much Inca culture is left in Peru and Bolivia today; The second part of this book tells the story of how Spain managed to conquer the Americas in the span of half a century, from the late 1400s to the mid-1500s. Although exploitation and warfare continued between the colonizers and the colonized after this period, the largest campaigns against the indigenous peoples were undertaken in this short time span, which is the focus of this book. In the second part of this book, you will learn ...

The Spanish Conquest of the Americas: An Enthralling Overview of the Conquistadors and Their Conquests of the Aztec and Inca Empires (Mesoamerica) by Billy Wellman 4.4 Stars (62 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

The Spanish conquest of the Americas is a pivotal part of the history of colonization. Christopher Columbus's discovery, albeit accidental, of a new landmass turned the world upside-down. Beginning in the late 15th century, the kingdom of Spain spearheaded the effort of colonization, sending expedition after expedition to the Caribbean islands and then to mainland North and South America. Through violence, bloodshed, and conquest, the Spanish conquistadors were able to gain control of the rich and prosperous lands of indigenous American civilizations, laying waste to magnificent political and social entities like the Aztec and Inca Empires. This book tells the story of how Spain managed to conquer the Americas in the span of half a century, from the late 1400s to the mid-1500s. Although exploitation and warfare continued between the colonizers and the colonized after this period, the largest campaigns against the indigenous peoples were undertaken in this short time span, which is the focus of this book. This comprehensive guide will cover the following: • Columbus and his expeditions, which encouraged other Europeans to start colonization • The makeup of indigenous American societies, from their social hierarchies and complex cultures to diverse political structures • Colonization of the Caribbean islands and the establishment of the Spanish West Indies • The arrival of Hernán Cortés and his groundbreaking expedition into the Aztec Empire in modern-day Mexico • The conquest of the Maya civilization in the Yucatán Peninsula and the power dynamics between different power-hungry conquistador groups there • The magnificent Inca Empire in the South American Andes and its conquest by Francisco Pizarro • Stories of infamous expeditions and the problems the conquistadors encountered • And much, much more!
