Searching for the Sun by Adrian Del Valle 3.7 Stars (54 Reviews)    Price verified 3 minutes ago

Upstairs, he removed a yellow note, folded and stuffed between the apartment door and the molding. To Sam Garrety. I don't appreciate your cat having fits every time you leave that apartment. Either you shut him up, or I will be forced to notify the landlord. Sam wrote her back and taped the note to her door. Dear Bertha, Sorry about the meowing from my cat, Dupree, I'm both amazed and impressed by your superior hearing ability, especially in lieu of all of the construction that has been going on out on the street lately. That you could actually hear him above the jackhammers and honking traffic is truly wondrous. You can be assured that I will do my absolute very best to keep him away from the door. Sincerely, Sam. Sam left for work. When he arrived home late that evening, he found another note from Bertha stuffed inside the same place. Look idiot, I have lived here in peace and quiet my whole life. I don't appreciate your wise cracking attitude and I don't like smelling your cat every time I pass your door. Do something about the noise or else. Me.__ To Me, thank you so much for expressing your concerns so eloquently. In compliance with your request this morning, I taped Dupree's mouth shut with duct tape and hung him up by all four limbs over my bed. Surprisingly, when I got home just now, I discovered that he had somehow worked his way out of the bindings in my absence. Therefore, I decided more drastic measures will need to take place. I am looking into horse tranquilizers to subdue him at least until I get back home after work from now on. The following Morning. Sam put off checking the door until after he had coffee. Curiosity finally got the best of him. He retrieved the latest note and sat at the table to read it. To the idiot next door. Look, I don't believe any of your bullshit. If this rhetoric of yours was meant to appease me, you have a thing or two coming. I just about had it with you. I have nothing else to say. To Bertha. Hey, that's great! I'm ...

Diego's Brooklyn by Adrian Del Valle 3.9 Stars (49 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Joe Barnes' home is a 9X12 room on a quiet tree-lined street near Downtown Brooklyn. He borrowed $10,000 from the Irish Mob in "Hell's Kitchen", a lot of money in 1961. The first payment is well over due. He's late by three months and now they want it all back. That's why he's hiding out across the river with no plans of going back to Manhattan. Joe is biding his time while he waits for a good tip on a fast horse at the Trotters. He still has all of the money he borrowed and believes he has hidden it well. Below, in a two room, first floor flat, 14 year old Diego lives with Ana, his handicapped mother. Money is hard to come by. A welfare check barely puts food on the table, so the boy hustles the streets to buy milk, bread, or anything else they need. He befriends Bill Jackson, an elderly black southerner from the Carolinas who lives one block over on Bergen Street with Beulah, his warm hearted, matronly wife. Though not on welfare, they scrape by on the little they get from Social Security, and lately, they have come up short for the electric bill. "And old Geezer the cat needs to eat, too. Momma been feedin' him scraps, but thems cats got to have their meat." Diego shows the older man how to fish for spare change in the subway gratings of the Lexington Avenue line. To earn more money, they deliver groceries in a modified baby carriage, but the venture fails from the start. "So you think this business went on belly up like a shot up gator?" says Bill. "Now, don't go selling your cow to buy a mule." 'Though streetwise and school-smart, nothing prepares Diego for what lie ahead when the Irish mob finally finds Joe Barnes. The once, quiet building is thrown into turmoil as it becomes witness to intimidation and murder. And the cops are of no help, either. One of their own wants that money, and he's willing to kill for it.

Mortal Sentry (Raina Kirkland Book 2) by Diana Graves 4.3 Stars (43 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Review by Brigitte: Professional reviewer of Paranormal Fantasy. I enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoyed the first one if not more. Raina who is half Elf, half witch and turned into the only living vampire after being bitten, discovers more about herself and her gifts. The revelations are unexpected and finding out who her real father is comes as quite a surprise. Raina is pursued by other mythical beings and is constantly fighting to stay alive or being taken into captivity. Being an Empath is a great attribute, which she only uses for the greater good. I like how so many different mythical beings are portrayed in this book and the way everything flows and falls into place. We also find out quite a lot about Katie, Raina's half sister too, which explains her attitude in the previous book. This part of the book is quite heart breaking. This story is full of surprises, some nice ones and some shocking ones too. I would recommend that you read Fatal Retribution before reading Mortal Sentry as some of the things, which are revealed about various characters such as Mato, Alistair and a few others are quite unexpected. This book is full of magic, suspense, betrayal, hurt, love and passion. It held my interest from beginning to end and I would fully recommend to those who like Vampires, shifters, faes and other mythical characters. I will definitely read the next book in this series and thank you Diana Graves for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

An unmarked aircraft has crashed on a Far Eastern mountain, its wreckage scattered on a 23,000 foot ridge. With the world at the brink of war, four strangers are drawn to that mountain by interwoven events. The Spanish missionary flees his nation's civil war. The Baltistani hunter scours the Himalaya for his sister's murderers. The American reporter tracks the Axis document that killed her journalist husband. The British mountaineer craves a final shot at the peak that claimed his comrades. Driven by their bitter pasts, the four converge on Nepal's Mt. Kangchenjunga, unaware that two flights of Japanese imperial marines are closing from the east with orders to retrieve the crashed plane's cargo at all costs for it will determine the victor of a war not yet started. Amazon Reviews: "The first chapter which takes place in a Japanese warplane over Tibet is outstanding. It grabs the reader and doesn't let go. Excellent writing. The story line of each character is brilliantly constructed as the novel is brought to an explosive conclusion. If you enjoy historical thrillers, I recommend this effort. (M&D) "A good World War II epic with settings in civil war Spain, depression America, and the Far East." (AC) "I loved this book for its historical scenes, believable characters, and intriguing plot. I was surprised at the romance interspersed throughout the story. In many ways, it's more a romantic-spiritual adventure than a novel about war." (LoMo) "A powerful story of love and war. Actually, it's four beautifully intertwined stories of four tormented strangers and their confrontation with an evil force atop a 23,000 foot ridge in the Himalaya. Incredible research went into this 1930's pre-war novel. I was taken by the detailed, living backdrop of Spain's civil war, America's great depression, and the mystic Far East." (GK) "Far more than fiction with so much historical accuracy in its backdrop." (AC) "This book has four main characters and sub plots that build to its ...

The Haunting of Bushranger Inn by B. J. Conroy 4.2 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

Sandy and Nate are a young, recently married couple from Sydney, Australia, looking to move to the country and run their own business. The Bushranger Inn on the outskirts of the town of Soames is up for sale, and they decide to take on the challenge of running it. The bushrangers were nineteenth-century Australian outlaws who raided farms, robbed banks, and held up stagecoaches. When the authorities pursued them, they disappeared into the vast hinterland of forest and scrub called the bush. The inn does have a historic connection to real bushrangers. It was formerly known as the Victoria Arms and was the unofficial headquarters of the Morgan gang. In 1863, police suspected them of robbing a gold shipment being taken by carriage from the gold fields of Soames to Sydney. The gold was never found, and the bushrangers died in mysterious circumstances. After moving into the inn, Sandy is disturbed by ghostly sounds occurring at the same time every night. Nate cannot hear them and thinks she is imagining it. Ignoring the sounds might help Sandy save her marriage and the business, but what if they're a warning? Could listening to them be their best chance of survival?

Hanging Murder (A Lancashire Detective Mystery Book 4) by A.J. Wright 4.3 Stars (158 Reviews)    Price verified 8 hours ago

We can all stand on principles until evil pays us a visit... The year is 1894 when Mr Simeon Crosby, a retired executioner, comes to Wigan with his wife and brother to give a talk on his life's work. Whilst he has an eager following, there are also many people who strongly object to Crosby's profession and do not wish his melancholy shadow to be cast over their town. Protests have been organised and threats have been made. Detective Sergeant Brennan is tasked with overseeing the security of the controversial visitor and all seems to be going to plan... until a murder is committed on the night of Crosby's talk. As Brennan and his brawny constable Fred Jaggery begin their lines of inquiry, they become overwhelmed with suspects and frustrated at the ambiguity of the evidence. And then a second body is found. Brennan soon discovers that both victim and killer can take many, sometimes indistinguishable, forms. Hanging Murder is one of A.J. Wright's Lancashire Detective Mystery series of cleverly crafted Victorian whodunits, which also includes Sitting Murder and Elementary Murder. Praise for A.J. Wright: 'This is an absolute gem of a historical crime novel - cleverly and intricately plotted, very well-written and convincingly evoking all the social problems of a late-Victorian industrial town' - Crime Review 'Excellently plotted, with some breathtaking moments, as pieces of the dark past come into the light' - Chris Nickson, best-selling author of the Richard Nottingham Mysteries 'A.J. Wright has composed a clever tale indeed in his novel, "Sitting Murder". The grey and gloomy place that was Victorian Britain is wonderfully rendered by the author in this fast-moving mystery novel' - L.J. Shea, bestselling author of The Raven's Augury 'A network of loves, hates, intrigue and suspense' - Roger Silverwood (best-selling author of DI Angel Mystery Series) '... the book vividly depicts the tensions and ramifications of the miners' ...

Walking down a Kelvingrove alley, DCI Curzon happens upon a body dumped in a builder's skip. Balder and fatter now, it takes a while to recognise the dead man as 1980s mega pop-star Jimmy Duke, the former singer-songwriter with Glasgow band The Waverleys. Working his way back through Duke's past associates, Curzon gets immersed in the shady world of the music business and this eye-opening experience takes him from Drumchapel to the Hollywood Hills via Hamburg and Strathbungo, Dalmarnock and Granada, not to mention the Oxfordshire countryside. As usual, he delves so deep he ends up on the wrong side of some very powerful, extremely dark people, but his single-minded drive for truth and justice inoculates him against any fear. Unfortunately, this tunnel vision and dedication to the job also causes him to neglect the newfound romance in his life, for which he must move heaven and earth to rescue when the murder investigation ends and he finally comes down from the adrenaline of the hunt. One thing's for sure: after reading The Song Thief you will never look at a do-gooding pop-star in the same way again.

Dead Even (Whitewitch Island Paranormal Cozies Book 1) by Patti Larsen (Patti Larsen Books/Mayhem and Murder Ink) 4.6 Stars (822 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

Come to Whitewitch Island, they said. A nice place to retire, they said... Who knew I owned so much stuff? Or that it would take up all this space in so many boxes I could barely navigate the rather substantial living room. Gathering things appeared to be one of my vices, though I hadn't noticed when I'd packed up my old place on the East coast for this journey to the West and a new beginning. Especially since I'd done so in a hurry and more than a little magic aided in the actual stuffing of my plethora of belongings into their temporary containment. I'd told myself I wasn't running away, almost believed it. Except, the clifftop Pacific Ocean view had been so crammed with cardboard and the detritus of my last life I could barely glimpse the water. Surely such blockage wasn't an omen. More likely, I had to admit my rapid retreat from who I used to be really had been a bit of a scramble out of the way of everything I knew and my concerns about foretelling was just another excuse to avoid the truth. I ran. So be it. Retired Guild Artemis Inquisitor Georgia Drake has left the paranormal world behind after the death of her partner in the line of duty. Along with her job investigating crime and murder. With her Hades Guardian mastiff, Benjamin, and raven pair for company, she moves her entire life across the continent to escape not only the loss but her oppressive and powerful family. But someone like George isn't meant for a nice, quiet retreat to the normal human world. The biggest problem? Crime and murder aren't through with her. When a local is killed by unusual means, she is recruited by the eager but untested sheriff to assist in uncovering the truth. Except, doing so means digging up the past that most residents of Whitewitch Island would rather forget... Welcome to the Whitewitch Island Paranormal Cozies!

Brink of Sanity by Jeff Danhauser 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Jacob Benson had a normal life until his wife's fatal car accident leaves him devastated. Through a chance encounter, he goes on a quest to help solve a baffling missing person's case that has eluded the community. This unfolds a darker path when he begins to have visions of his wife coming back from the dead. Is he about to discover the true nature of his wife's death, or is this part of a much larger predicament than he could ever imagine? Despite "Brink of Sanity" being a different genre than I would normally read, I really enjoyed this book! The story was so interesting and I never knew what was going to happen next. The characters were well written and relatable. The ending was perfect. Can't wait to pick up another book from Jeff Danhauser!

THE ARTIST: Creator or Predator (STOLEN LIVES: An absolutely gripping serial killer thriller Book 2) by Andy Stone 3.9 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

Is James Madison a creator? Or predator? Discover the dark secrets of Glen Cove, a luxurious five-star resort in Northern Florida, in Andy Stone's latest thriller. The Artist. Glen Cove has a mysterious new resident intent on creating beautiful works of art using grueling techniques. He is one of the world's most famous artists, but how he accomplishes his work is exceptionally gruesome. He is constantly chasing love, but what was it? Is it a chemical reaction to propagate the species? It was like the law of diminishing returns. Once you have enough, you don't want anymore -- the same thing with sex. Once you had your fill and were satiated, you didn't want a second helping, so you looked for new sources. To maintain that feeling of arousal, the perpetrator strives to keep it, but it eventually fades away. He meets a girl, and it is the initial intensity of arousal, but he gets angry at her because it subsides. It is her fault that he can't love for all time. But he has his way. He has to preserve her so that she can remain this way forever. Many famous artists are worldwide, but James Madison is one of the most famous. He sculpts nudes that appear so natural that he can easily fool you into thinking they're human. James wants them to be part of his family and never leave him, but if needed, he finds them good homes, unlike when he was a child. He lived in a very dysfunctional family. His father, who beat him and put him down constantly, would sit in his old lounger, beer in hand, and cough from his emphysema with a cigarette hanging from his lips. Richard and Summer, two new residents, are asked to join this secret society, and soon discover that it is more than just a place of wealth and power. Stone's latest novel will surely enthrall readers with a thrilling plot and unique antagonist. If you enjoyed Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, you'll love this compelling mystery.
