Spartacus: The Myth and the Man by M. J. Trow 3.6 Stars (19 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

This is a revised version of M. J. Trow's classic biography of an ancient and unforgettable hero. 'I am Spartacus' ranks among the most famous lines in Hollywood, with its image of the man's comrades prepared to die in his place in the Kirk Douglas film. And die they did; not the actors but the real army of Spartacus, crucified in their thousands along the Appian Way that leads to Rome. Spartacus: The Myth and the Man is a revised version of M. J. Trow's original biography, the first to be written in English, of a legend who has become all things to all men. He has been the focus of a ballet and an opera. Karl Marx called him 'the finest fellow in ancient history' and a communist group in 1920s Germany tried to topple the Weimar government in his name. The humble slave from Thrace (today's Bulgaria) became a gladiator, led a revolt and took on the greatest military system in history - Rome. The Romans were understandably anxious to erase him from history, so key facts about the man are hard to come by. What we do know is that he fought not one, but six Roman armies and beat them all before his final defeat. Thoroughly researched and impressive in its breadth, Spartacus: The Myth and the Man will please readers with an interest in ancient history. Praise for Spartacus: The Myth and the Man: 'Puts the fascinating story of Spartacus and his rebellion into its historical context in great detail. I really enjoyed it' - Amazon review 'If you're interested in Ancient Rome, or really enjoyed the Kirk Douglas epic, this book is fascinating. It highlights how the Spartacus story has been used and misused down the centuries and attempts to put flesh on the bones of the story' - Amazon review M. J. Trowis a historian, biographer and crime novelist. His books include the well-known Lestrade and Maxwell series as well as non-fiction such as Who Killed Kit Marlowe? and Vlad the Impaler. Originally from Wales, he now lives on the Isle of Wight.

Boys in the Park by James Huber 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 31 minutes ago

This is a work of non-fiction the only elements of fiction are the names of the characters Three boys in the 50's and 60's, growing up, slowly, playing and laughing in those halcyon days. It was over 60 years ago that we played in the mud. Seems like yesterday. We had no fear of being out after dark. We had no fear of marauding gangs, dope was used to paint balsa wood airplanes. Most fights ended in "Yah, if I'm one what are you." Fighting was not very common. We played baseball with a T-Shirt wrapped around out hand for a glove. The old ball bat had tape and nails. We played in dust, mud and on asphalt. The teachers taught, as best they could. We learned a sense of values from them. The churches were all the same, ours was good the others were bad. But we didn't believe that either. To have a fifty cent piece was to be a tycoon. Money meant nothing much to us. We got paddled, had our mouths washed out with Ivory soap, oh how I remember that. A great summer trip was out to the farm, or boy scout camp. One summer we went out of state so our grandparents could visit their brothers and sisters. General Eisenhower was in the White House. That was all we needed to know. The rest would come along.Share with me, if you will, those times when we thought we would be forever young. MAN VS CRAZY: a memoir of mental illness, maturity and mortality (Revised Edition) by Matthew James Elwell 4.5 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 46 minutes ago

"It'd only been a little over 18 months since I'd dared to leave the comfort of my childhood bedroom where the walls were still plastered with movie posters and action figures were lined up on the window ledge. And now, I had a front-row seat to psychosis, drug-addiction, sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress and self-harm. And that was only my personal life... " 18-year-old wannabe writer Matthew finds himself washed-up on the English Riviera, forced to take up work as a carer in a low-rent Nursing Home just to keep a roof over his head. He soon crosses paths with childhood friend Roxy; a streetwise aspiring musician suffering from schizophrenia, who opens up a world of chaos and colourful characters, and convinces Matthew to take a job on a secure Psychiatric Unit. There, he quickly realises that he's traded "changing nappies and soaping up old people's saggy bits" for a daily onslaught of abuse, restraints and genuine insanity. But when he falls into a relationship with ex-patient Laura, a single-mum with a troubled past, things really do start to get crazy. Always bitingly honest, sometimes darkly funny and occasionally tragic, "Man vs Crazy" is a coming of age memoir about the true price of the often traumatic journey into adulthood.

Over Under Sideways Down: The Flight of The Yardbirds by Alan Clayson 3.8 Stars (33 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

'The Yardbirds allowed me to improvise a lot in live performance, and I started building a textbook of ideas that I eventually used in Zeppelin' - Jimmy Page Alan Clayson has written the only full length account of the legendary British rock band, who evolved from the sleepy suburbs south of London in the 1960s to spawn three of the world's greatest guitarists - Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. The Yardbirds had a string of international hits throughout the 1960s, including For Your Love, Shapes of Things and Over Under Sideways Down, and their improvisational on stage "rave-ups" became legendary. Although they were together for just five years, their reach has extended far into rock culture. Noted music historian Alan Clayson charts the band's rise and changing line-up, from the pub and club circuit of the United Kingdom to rock/RnB immortality. This study covers not just the group's five years of frenetic activity in the sixties but also follows the subsequent careers of individual members. Page's monumental success with Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton's rise to guitar god and Beck's formation of The Jeff Beck Group, as well as The Yardbirds' recent reformation, which sees original members Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty touring to packed auditoriums around the world. Long term fan and contemporary Clayson relates the story of this iconic British band with style and perception, placing them as pioneers of psychedelic rock and early hard rock. This is an intimate and fascinating account not only of The Yardbirds themselves but also of an amazingly creative period of British music history. Many rock critics and historians aside from Clayson credit The Yardbirds' influence on generations of pop acts, right through to punk and the Britpop of the nineties. 'The Yardbirds were the first psychedelic band' - Jeff Beck 'There were four rock bands in the world that really counted, and The Yardbirds was one of them' - Simon Napier-Bell Noted rock critic ...

Jeffrey Dahmer and his Father by George Stietz 2.3 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

How well did Jeffrey Dahmer's father really know him, and did he use the right approach in attempting to know him? In this work, the author analyzes the behavioral and historical paradigm that Lionel Dahmer repeatedly used to attempt to understand his son's behavior as a boy, a teen and a man. Analysis is also presented regarding attempts and behavior that proved to be outliers to the sample, the general application of the paradigm and the algorithm that Jeff's thoughts and conduct presented over the course of his life. In addition, expert outside sources are consulted, as well, to further elucidate the conundrum that Jeff's actions and psychological leanings created and which manifested themselves in horrific murder and mayhem the likes of which mankind has rarely witnessed before or since. JEFFREY DAHMER AND HIS FATHER offers the reader a bird's eye view into the development and psyche of Jeffrey Dahmer--just like his father had.

Unbelievable Crimes Volume One: Macabre Yet Unknown True Crime Stories by Daniela Airlie 4.2 Stars (340 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

Step into some of the most heinous (yet relatively unknown) crimes ever committed and delve into twelve twisted tales of murder in Unbelievable Crimes. From the deplorable abduction and imprisonment of young women by James Jamelske, who kept his victims in his basement, to the tale of charismatic charmer Charles Schmid who boasted about his savage murders, each story in this anthology dives into pure evil. In one case, I'll take you back to 1993, to the city of Houston, where two teenage girls, Jennifer Ertman, and Elizabeth Peña, were brutally raped and murdered. This crime can only be described as barbaric and senseless, especially when you factor in the young ages of the killers. I'll delve into the bizarre and twisted story of Carl Tanzler, a man who becomes fixated on a beautiful young woman. After her untimely death, he kept her as a mummified corpse in his home for years, with a genuinely inexplicable outcome. You'll also be introduced to the gruesome story of Omaima Nelson, an Egyptian-American woman who killed her husband before cooking and eating parts of his body. While most people know about the incomprehensible acts of Ted Bundy or the wicked crimes of the "killer clown" John Wayne Gacy, there's an underbelly of true crime that has been left untouched over the years. These crimes had a fleeting news story or a 30-second snippet on a local news station and have since been long forgotten. I believe we should remember these crimes to ensure the victims - and their ordeals - don't get wiped from true crime history. Discover the dark side of humanity as I delve into some of the most shocking and twisted little-known true crime stories in Unbelievable Crimes Volume One. To most, the senseless acts of violence and pure evil depicted in these cases are simply unimaginable. But, they're all somebody's reality. Please note, as with all true crime content, this book contains details that cover real-life murders and violence.

Arts Council Immortals by Kevin Kiely 3.6 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Arts Council Immortals is a satire in the blockbuster genre using real names and events. During four decades -- 1980-2020 the arts council in 70 Merrion Square, Dublin received government grants totalling over 1.6 billion. Their worst kept secrets are the hierarchy, careerism, imposition of 'arts policy' and fear in controlling the national arts-scene by absolute power. A Haughey-esque group with the bogus name 'aosdána' infiltrated the council in the 1980s. This 'ace gang' were self-elected to siphon euro-millions for themselves while being nowhere enshrined in any law or statutory instrument. The admin-staff, board and insiders absorb excessive percentages of the annual grants in salaries, expenses, and perks according to the council's politburo structures devoid of democratic principles. The council 'declares' financial data annually in reports, including artspeak and brochure rhetoric. The financial data relates to the cash flow in denominations from millions to thousands disguised in elementary accountancy. The arts council mechanism of 'Declared Interest' is executed by dictatorial illuminati dispensing grant monies through covert networking within their loyal cliques. Arts Council Immortals foregrounds obvious solutions for an institution which is unquantifiable, non-measurable, out of control in psychopathology, and has become a Khmer Rouge Kulchur Cult. Council reports from 1951-2020 are presented in excerpts with photographs and cash flow statements, as well as personal testimonies from 'insiders' commenting on the corruption. Contending with Paul: The Hidden Story Behind the Writing of Matthew, Mark, and Luke by William Joseph Cobble Price verified 6 hours ago

Awarded Amazon's "#1 New Release in Biographies of Judaism" Contending with Paul: The Hidden Story Behind the Writing of Matthew, Mark and Luke, is not a book that easily fits into existing genres. Within its pages one will find history, theology, biography, and literary criticism. This book focuses primarily on the first two generations of the Christian movement. The first generation includes the Apostles, Jesus' family members, and Paul. It is this generation who would first debate how the message of Jesus should be presented to the Gentile world (non-Jews) and what would be expected of those Gentiles who desired to follow Jesus. It is the second generation of believers who began to write in a new literary genre that Christians call "gospels." The Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of Mark, and the Gospel of Luke, are the earliest three to have survived, and it is through these writings that the debates of the first generation get carried forward by the second. Though all three gospels were written after the death of Paul, it is asserted by the author that each gospel writer contended with his continuing influence in some way, though each from their own distinctive vantage point. Paul's influence may be underestimated if one only counts his extant works in the New Testament. Modern Bibles attribute 13 letters to Paul, while some older Bibles attribute a 14th by assigning the Epistle to the Hebrews to him as well. To ask if a mere 13 letters sent out to churches and individuals throughout the Graeco-Roman world would have been enough to influence the later gospel writers is to ask the wrong question. For the benefit of using a round number, it can be estimated that Paul ministered for 30 years. Also, for the sake of a round number, the churches and individuals to whom he corresponded may be estimated to be 20. Supposing he wrote to each of these entities twice a year, Paul's total ministerial correspondence would rise from his 13 extant works to an output of 1,200. ...

This is the first in the series, I finished second in the series, and it was fantastic. I bought. The next book in the series. What a great read. It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. I recommend this book for very one. The first book in the series is a most unusual love story set in WWII between Carl Unger, a Nazi and his Jewish childhood girlfriend, Ericka Steinberg. Her father was a well-known Jewish Doctor in Berlin. Carl's uncle, Joseph Unger, was the chairman of the board of Unger Industries that financed Adolph Hitler at the beginning of the war. Carl's biological parents were murdered, and Joseph immediately adopted Carl to continue his grooming to take over the Fourth Reich (New World Order) when the time was right. Himmler gave Carl orders to marry Christine, a devout Nazi. Her father, Maurice, made his fortune as a young man by selling armaments to war-torn countries. Including the Nazis. Carl initially was supposed to bring all the art and valuables out of Germany and surrounding countries to finance what was ahead in America. He comes back to Germany with Ericka to bring back the paintings and valuables that were left behind. 5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read! Reviewed in the United States on July ...

The Bad Boys of Diplomacy: Diplomats "badness" ratings by country by S. Novikov 3.0 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 2 hours ago

The first part of this book describes the behaviour of that "special" category of drivers who have diplomatic privileges on the roads of various countries. Some of them drink & drive, some of them are guilty of speeding, and some just don't like to pay the parking fees. Amazingly, it is often not possible to prosecute them for this, and so the countries where these diplomats reside lose substantial amounts of money on fines alone. So diplomats of which countries violate the law most often? And diplomats of which countries almost never violate the law? Which countries openly share statistics about foreign diplomats violations, and which countries conceal them? This book answers these questions and includes frank comments from the diplomats themselves that sheds light on the behavior of their colleagues from different countries. You'll read answers from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of 22 countries: Vatican, Great Britain, Switzerland, Singapore, Poland, Norway, New Zealand, Moldavia, Malaysia, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Kazakhstan, Ireland, Georgia, Finland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Croatia, Brazil, Bulgaria, and Armenia. These data have never been published before, and so some of the stories are quite incredible and shocking. At the end you will also be able to clearly see who holds the top spots in law violation amongst the diplomatic corps. In the second part of the book we will talk about personae non gratae. Usually the motives for declaring someone a persona non grata are this diplomat's hostility towards the government of the state of residence, interference with its internal affairs, disrespect of its laws, customs etc. Often the phrase "for impermissible activities incompatible with diplomatic status" lurks behind it, which can also mean an espionage charge. Read on to find about about some fascinating details associated with this somewhat unpleasant status.

Richie's career which was already on the fast track, catapulted after making national headlines following his team's dedicated efforts led to the arrest and conviction of the biggest heroin distribution ring on the east coast, known as the Country Boys. Huge quantities of heroin were seized, removed from circulation and kept from the veins of users. Persia in the Great Game: Sir Percy Sykes – explorer, consul, soldier, spy by Antony Wynn (Lume Books) 4.1 Stars (69 Reviews)    Price verified one minute ago

Percy Sykes was sent by Army Intelligence in the 1890s, first as an explorer and spy, then to open consulates along Persia's eastern borders. His job was to deter Russian expansion towards India. In his time, Sir Percy Sykes was a legend of empire: unpaid, he rode through thousands of miles of the harshest desert, marsh and mountain, often with his indomitable sister. He did whatever he felt necessary to protect his country's interests: when consul at Meshed during a very turbulent time, he bugged the Russian consulate and, armed only with diplomacy, single-handedly faced down a Russian attempt to annex north-east Persia. But Sykes was not the typical servant of empire. He hunted gazelle with princes, read Persian poetry, sat at the feet of dervish masters and got to the heart of the country. Persia in the Great Game explores Sykes' 25 years in Persia with humour and domestic detail, to give an insight that is instructive today. Praise for Persia in the Great Game: 'A vivid reminder of the extraordinary lives and times of those who once played the Great Game. Percy Sykes was one of the ablest, if most controversial, of these. A valuable addition to Great Game literature' - Peter Hopkirk 'Very entertaining biography of an extraordinary character' - Goodreads Antony Wynn read Persian and Turkish at Balliol College, Oxford, and has spent many years working in and around Persia. As well writing books, he is a reviewer, columnist and lecturer.

Sketches by Patrick Toddy 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

This was first published as a paperback in Pittsberg, and soon afterwards nearly all copies I had went missing from 7th Ave Saint Peters, Australia. What then happened some years later was a so called super-band formed, with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lyn & Roy Orbison and went by the name, The Traveling Wilbury's. Most of the Bob Dylan contributions to the band was with songs that talked about personal items such as where the book was printed, or where my literary agent came from. Now there's quite a story! Seems she has some links to a mafia hit-man for hire from some years ago. her address is in New jersey, and Bruce Springsteen is from the same state. His 1980 album was literally about what was going to happen to John Lennon after his silence of 5 years was broken. This book contains some short stories written as literary sketches, and also has some non-fictional chapters that cover various topics including the Charles Manson serial killings being linked to my home state of South Australia. Much the same can be said about the '63 JFK assassination too. By the time it was all written my good friend, "God incarnate" Hindu Astrologer Bhagawan Soaham of UK had passed away under mysterious circumstances. His focus had been a 21 year penance for peace, and he'd also worked with Gandhi in the Quit India movement. I guess that his ppolitics were not believable and so a fire was set at the Alma Road address and he shortly after died. I had likewise experienced some very violent attacks and conspiracies, some of which continue to this day. Jay Soaham --- Jay Jagat!

Saint Augustine * * *Download for FREE on Kindle Unlimited + Free BONUS Inside!* * * Read On Your Computer, MAC, Smartphone, Kindle Reader, iPad, or Tablet. Although he was born in what was considered the backwaters of the Roman Empire, Saint Augustine of Hippo has long been renowned for his early religious and philosophical thought. He has been called a Doctor of the Church for his unrivaled ability of patching up even the most complex of theological questions. He tackled such things as the condition of the soul and the omnipotence of God. During the course of his tenure as bishop of the North-African city of Hippo, Augustine often gained as many critics as he did followers. Inside you will read about... The Son of a Pagan Augustine's Love Child The Road that Led to Rome Looking toward Christianity The Priest of Hippo A Founding Father of the Church And much more! To say that this esteemed theologian was a complex man would be an understatement. Saint Augustine's life held many contradictions from the very beginning. Born to a pagan father and a devoutly Christian mother, he seemed destined to be at a crossroads. In his life he was both a sinner and a saint, and his seminal works, such as the Confessions and the City of God, prove that somewhere at the intersection of tremendous faith and terrible human frailty you will find the greatness of Saint Augustine.
