More poignantly, he tells the inspiring stories of the French crew who became the first Allied airmen to bomb Berlin and the six RAF Lancasters who ...

Jerusalem's Traitor: Josephus, Masada, and the Fall of Judea by Desmond Seward 4.4 Stars (57 Reviews)    Price verified 12 minutes ago

An ancient historian who watched the destruction of Jerusalem... When the Jews revolted against Rome in 66 CE, Josephus, a Jerusalem aristocrat, was made a general in his nation's army. Captured by the Romans, he saved his skin by finding favour with the emperor Vespasian. He then served as an adviser to the Roman legions, running a network of spies inside Jerusalem, in the belief that the Jews' only hope of survival lay in surrender to Rome. As a Jewish eyewitness who was given access to Vespasian's campaign notebooks, Josephus is our only source of information for the war of extermination that ended in the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, and the amazing times in which he lived. He is of vital importance for anyone interested in the Middle East, Jewish history, and the early history of Christianity. Grandfather Lost by Vella Munn 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 52 minutes ago

Violent death mystery lasts for one hundred years In 1924, Homer Eon Flint, a thirty six year old multi-published writer and married father of three young children was found dead at the bottom of a canyon. According to a witness and the police, he was pinned under a taxi with a loaded pistol nearby. The media sensationalized his violent end. Some sources suggested he'd participated in an earlier bank robbery. Several friends even considered that he'd committed suicide because of his interest in the occult. The taxi driver--who died in prison--told police that Flint had hijacked the taxi at gunpoint and had driven away, only to die in an accident later that night. Then there's the belief held by Homer's family. He was a victim -- in the wrong place at the wrong time. Homer Eon Flint is considered one of the early twentieth century American pioneers in science fiction. His work such as The Devolutionist and The Emancipatrix have remained as pillars of the speculative fiction genre. ...

Searching for Dr. Harris: The Life and Times of a Remarkable African American Physician (Studies in Social Medicine) by Margaret Humphreys (The University of North Carolina Press) Price verified 3 hours ago

This is the untold story of Dr. J. D. Harris, an African American physician whose life and career straddled enormous changes for Black professionals and the practice of medicine. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Harris served as a contract physician to the Union Army and transitioned to a similar post under the Freedmen's Bureau, treating Black troops and freemen in Virginia. Margaret Humphreys narrates not only what we know about Harris, but offers context to his remarkable journey, including how incredible it was that a young man born into freedom in a slave state learned to read when literacy for Black people was illegal. He was one of very few African Americans to become a doctor before Howard Medical School opened in the 1870s, a fact that reveals both the structural barriers to medical education for Black Americans and highlights how those structures weakened in the 1860s. Drawing on census records, court records, Civil War and Reconstruction documents from the National ...

Top Models by Samuel Claesson (Sequoia Press) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 22 minutes ago

There were a lot of talents in Hollywood in the 1950s, some of whom -despite being talented- faded into obscurity after a brief fling at stardom. I thought that it'd be great to pay tribute to seven whom appeared in films like Guys and Dolls (1955) while modeling for some prominent brands. June Kirby (1928-2022), Larri Thomas (1932-2013), and Pat Sheehan (1931-2006) are the blondes, and Suzanne Ames (1933-2013), Suzanne Alexander (1931-1975), Madelyn Darrow (1935-2015), and Jann Darlyn are the brunettes. They could act, sing, dance, and some became successful in the field of business. I conducted various interviews and compiled photographs to create a great publication dedicated to their careers.

Unbuttoning America: A Biography of "Peyton Place" by Ardis Cameron (Cornell University Press) 3.6 Stars (15 Reviews)    Price verified 22 minutes ago

Published in 1956, Peyton Place became a bestseller and a literary phenomenon. A lurid and gripping story of murder, incest, female desire, and social injustice, it was consumed as avidly by readers as it was condemned by critics and the clergy. Its author, Grace Metalious, a housewife who grew up in poverty in a New Hampshire mill town and had aspired to be a writer from childhood, loosely based the novel's setting, characters, and incidents on real-life places, people, and events. The novel sold more than 30 million copies in hardcover and paperback, and it was adapted into a hit Hollywood film in 1957 and a popular television series that aired from 1964 to 1969. More than half a century later, the term "Peyton Place" is still in circulation as a code for a community harboring sordid secrets. In Unbuttoning America, Ardis Cameron mines extensive interviews, fan letters, and archival materials including contemporary cartoons and cover images from film posters and foreign editions to ...

We see him as a student cutting lab classes to attend an afternoon concert of the Boston Symphony, as a young man growing a van Dyke beard to make himself look older for his first job as an engineer with General Electric, and as a new ...

Babysitter: An American History by Miriam Forman-Brunell (NYU Press) 4.7 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

On Friday nights many parents want to have a little fun together -- without the kids. But "getting a sitter" -- especially a dependable one -- rarely seems trouble-free. Will the kids be safe with "that girl"? It's a question that discomfited parents have been asking ever since the emergence of the modern American teenage girl nearly a century ago. In Babysitter, Miriam Forman-Brunell brings critical attention to the ubiquitous, yet long-overlooked babysitter in the popular imagination and American history. Informed by her research on the history of teenage girls' culture, Forman-Brunell analyzes the babysitter, who has embodied adults' fundamental apprehensions about girls' pursuit of autonomy and empowerment. In fact, the grievances go both ways, as girls have been distressed by unsatisfactory working conditions. In her quest to gain a fuller picture of this largely unexamined cultural phenomenon, Forman-Brunell analyzes a wealth of diverse sources, such as The Baby-sitter's Club ...

The Wow Climax: Tracing the Emotional Impact of Popular Culture by Henry Jenkins 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

A spirited collection of essays that get to the heart of what gives popular culture its emotional impact Vaudevillians used the term "the wow climax" to refer to the emotional highpoint of their acts -- a final moment of peak spectacle following a gradual building of audience's emotions. Viewed by most critics as vulgar and sensationalistic, the vaudeville aesthetic was celebrated by other writers for its vitality, its liveliness, and its playfulness. The Wow Climax follows in the path of this more laudatory tradition, drawing out the range of emotions in popular culture and mapping what we might call an aesthetic of immediacy. It pulls together a spirited range of work from Henry Jenkins, one of our most astute media scholars, that spans different media (film, television, literature, comics, games), genres (slapstick, melodrama, horror, exploitation cinema), and emotional reactions (shock, laughter, sentimentality). Whether highlighting the sentimentality at the heart of the Lassie ...

The Essential Agus: The Writings of Jacob B. Agus by Steven T. Katz (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Rabbi Jacob Agus' (1911-1986) intellectual production spanned nearly a half century and covered an enormous historical and conceptual range, from the biblical to the modern era. Best known as an important Jewish scholar, he also held important rabbinic, teaching, and public positions. Although born and raised within an orthodox setting, Agus was strongly influenced by American liberalism and his work displayed modernizing sympathies, reservations about nationalism--including some forms of Zionism--and often severe criticisms of kabbalah. Agus crafted a unique, quite American, modernizing vision that ardently sought to remain in touch with the wellsprings of the rabbinic tradition while remaining open to the intellectual and moral currents of his own time. The Essential Agus brings together a sampling of Agus' most important published and unpublished material in one easily accessible volume. It will be an invaluable resource for students and researchers seeking to experience Agus' ...

Reflections: The Life and Writings of a Young Blind Woman in Post-Revolutionary France (The History of Disability Book 5) by Therese-Adèle Husson (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 22 minutes ago

In the 1820s, several years before Braille was invented, Therese-Adele Husson, a young blind woman from provincial France, wrote an audacious manifesto about her life, French society, and her hopes for the future. Through extensive research and scholarly detective work, authors Catherine Kudlick and Zina Weygand have rescued this intriguing woman and the remarkable story of her life and tragic death from obscurity, giving readers a rare look into a world recorded by an unlikely historical figure. Reflections is one of the earliest recorded manifestations of group solidarity among people with the same disability, advocating self-sufficiency and independence on the part of blind people, encouraging education for all blind children, and exploring gender roles for both men and women. Resolutely defying the sense of "otherness" which pervades discourse about the disabled, Husson instead convinces us that that blindness offers a fresh and important perspective on both history and ...

Borden of Yale: The Life and Legacy of William Borden - No Reserve, No Retreat, No Regrets by Mrs. Howard Taylor 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 52 minutes ago

The Inspiring Life and Legacy of William Borden, a Man of Unwavering Faith and Profound Impact William Borden was extraordinary in almost every sense. Born into wealth and privilege, he could have chosen to live a life of luxury and ease. Instead, he surrendered it all for a life of service to Christ. "Borden of Yale" is the riveting account of a man who exemplified what it means to be fully committed to God. Raised in Moody Church in Chicago and educated at both Yale and Princeton, Borden first felt the missionary call during a round-the-world journey gifted to him by his parents at the age of sixteen. The following year, he received a distinct call to dedicate his life to serving the Muslims of China, a decision that shaped everything he did from that point forward. Though a scholar in his own right, Borden's theological insights were not merely intellectual pursuits; they were living beliefs that propelled him into action. From leading Bible studies in dorms and founding the ...

Making Peace in an Age of War: Emperor Ferdinand III (1608–1657) (Central European Studies) by Mark Hengerer (Purdue University Press) 3.9 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 22 minutes ago

This English-language translation of Mark Hengerer's Kaiser Ferdinand III: 1608-1657 Eine Biographie is based on an analysis of the weekly reports sent by the papal nuncio's office to the Vatican. These reports give detailed information about the daily whereabouts of the dynasty, courtiers, and foreign visitors, and they contain the gossip of the court in addition to weekly analysis of some political problems. This material enabled the author to report on daily life of the dynasty and to analyze the circumstances under which policy was made, which has led to a balance between the personality of Ferdinand III and the problems with which he dealt. In this biography, Hengerer provides answers to the question: Why did it take the emperor more than ten years to end a devastating war, the traumatizing effects of which on central Europe lasted into the twentieth century, particularly since there was no hope of victory against his foreign adversaries from the very moment he came into power?

Eva and Otto: Resistance, Refugees, and Love in the Time of Hitler by Tom Pfister (Purdue University Press) 4.7 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Eva and Otto is a true story about German opposition and resistance to Hitler as revealed through the early lives of Eva Lewinski Pfister (1910-1991) and Otto Pfister (1900-1985). It is an intimate and epic account of two Germans -- Eva born Jewish, Otto born Catholic -- who worked with a little-known German political group that resisted and fought against Hitler in Germany before 1933 and then in exile in Paris before the German invasion of France in May 1940. After their improbable escapes from separate internment and imprisonment in Europe, Eva obtained refuge in America in October 1940 where she worked to rescue other endangered political refugees, including Otto, with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt. As revealed in recently declassified records, Eva and Otto later engaged in different secret assignments with the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in support of the Allied war effort. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, Eva and Otto gave each other hope and strength as ...

Ike's Letters to a Friend, 1941-1958 by Robert W. Griffith (University Press of Kansas) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 52 minutes ago

"Swede Hazlett was one of the people to whom I 'opened up.'" -- Dwight D. Eisenhower Dwight D. Eisenhower and E. E. ("Swede") Hazlett grew up together in Abilene, Kansas, and remained close, corresponding regularly from 1941 until Hazlett's death in 1958. The letters collected in this volume, many of them surprisingly revealing, contain Eisenhower's views on a wide range of diplomatic, military, and political issues. Taken together they constitute a remarkable inner history of Eisenhower's public career. Robert Griffith's introductory essay is a masterful account of the Eisenhower-Hazlett relationship and of the insights provided by their correspondence for understanding the Eisenhower years. Griffith's substantial headnotes give additional detail and context where necessary and provide a sense of narrative continuity to the correspondence. The Eisenhower who emerges from these pages bears little resemblance to the bumbling caricature produced by journalists in the 1950s. But ...

Refuge Must Be Given: Eleanor Roosevelt, the Jewish Plight, and the Founding of Israel by John F. Sears (Purdue University Press) 5.0 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Refuge Must Be Given details the evolution of Eleanor Roosevelt from someone who harbored negative impressions of Jews to become a leading Gentile champion of Israel in the United States. The book explores, for the first time, Roosevelt's partnership with the Quaker leader Clarence Pickett in seeking to admit more refugees into the United States, and her relationship with Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles, who was sympathetic to the victims of Nazi persecution yet defended a visa process that failed both Jewish and non-Jewish refugees. After the war, as a member of the American delegation to the United Nations, Eleanor Roosevelt slowly came to the conclusion that the partition of Palestine was the only solution both for the Jews in the displaced persons camps in Europe, and for the conflict between the Arabs and the Jews. When Israel became a state, she became deeply involved in supporting the work of Youth Aliyah and Hadassah, its American sponsor, in bringing Jewish refugee ...

My Life: A Story of God's Grace by Roger Mohrlang 4.8 Stars (12 Reviews)    Price verified 52 minutes ago

This is the story of a small-town Nebraska boy whose life was transformed by his conversion to Christ and his study of scripture during his college years as a physics student. In a most unlikely way, he went on to become a missionary Bible translator, living in a mud hut among the Kamw? people in northeastern Nigeria, and then a professor of biblical studies at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. But this is really the fascinating story of God's grace, leading and providing for him over the past sixty years of his sometimes eccentric life. Told with candor, self-deprecating humor, and evangelical conviction, this is the story of a person who, recognizing Christ's claim on his life, has devoted his life to serving him.

Rowland Hill: His Life, Anecdotes, and Pulpit Sayings by Vernon J. Charlesworth (Aneko Press) Price verified 4 hours ago

Rowland Hill was humorous, but he was a great deal more, and those who know his lifework will not remember him as exemplifying one single quality, but as a good, childlike man in whom nothing for Christ was restrained. Considering him as he was overall, we will not soon see anyone like him again. There was no dishonesty or duplicity in him. He loved his Lord and the souls of men, and he threw all his might into the pursuit of doing good. Certainly few men were ever more unselfish. People called him eccentric because they themselves were out of center. With his great heart, calm soul, wise mind, and loving nature, he had learned to wait upon his Lord, and so had found the right center and true course for his being. At first, the press had its sneers for him, but it could not lessen the respect in which he was held, and in due time it turned around and joined in the chorus of his praise. His riper years were full of honor, and like his younger days, they were full of fruit unto God.

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin by Benjamin Franklin (Global Publishers) 4.4 Stars (7,253 Reviews)    Price verified 52 minutes ago

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods during which he wrote them. There are actual breaks between the first three parts of the narrative, but Part Three's narrative continues into Part Four without an authorial break. In the "Introduction" of the 1916 publication of the Autobiography, editor F. W. Pine wrote that Franklin's biography provided the "most remarkable of all the remarkable histories of our self-made men" with Franklin as the greatest exemplar.

Envisioning Sociology is a landmark work, the first major study of the founding of sociology in Britain and the enormous contributions made by the intellectual circle led by Victor Branford and Patrick Geddes. Authors John Scott and Ray Bromley chronicle the biographical connections and personal partnerships of the circle's key participants, their international connections, their organization-building work, and the business activities that underpinned their efforts. Branford and Geddes fashioned an ambitious and wide-ranging interdisciplinary vision, drawing on geography, anthropology, economics, and urban planning, in addition to sociology. This vision was an integral part of a project of social reconstruction, a "third way" eschewing both liberalism and communism in favor of cooperation, redistribution, and federalism. Envisioning Sociology uncovers a previously hidden history of the social sciences, giving readers a fascinating glimpse into early twentieth-century social science ...

The Midas of the Wabash: A Biography of John Purdue (The Founders Series) by Robert C. Kriebel (Purdue University Press) 4.2 Stars (8 Reviews)    Price verified 57 minutes ago

The Midas of the Wabash is a biography of noted businessman John Purdue (1802-1876), whose donations of time and money led to the founding of Indiana's land grant university, Purdue University, in 1869. Purdue also contributed to economically important bridge, railroad, and cemetery construction, the existence of Lafayette Savings Bank and the Battle Ground Collegiate Institute, cattle farming, Lafayette's public school system, and countless other worthy enterprises. This is the first published full length study of Mr. Purdue's life and work beyond casual street-talk that portrayed Purdue as a difficult individual with whom to work. This biography incorporates research efforts by previous writers with facts gleaned from newspaper coverage, official documents, and a few rare samples of Mr. Purdue's letters. In this way, a complete picture of the man and myth is generated.

Ross-Ade: Their Purdue Stories, Stadium, and Legacies (The Founders Series) by Robert C. Kriebel (Purdue University Press) 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 4 hours ago

Dave Ross (1871-1943) and George Ade (1866-1944) were trustees, distinguished alumni and benefactors of Purdue University. Their friendship began in 1922 and led to their giving land and money for the 1924 construction of Ross-Ade Stadium, now a 70,000 seat athletic landmark on the West Lafayette campus. Their life stories date to 1883 Purdue and involve their separate student experiences and eventual fame. Their lives crossed paths with U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, and Will Rogers among others. Gifts or ideas from Ross or Ade led to creation of the Purdue Research Foundation, Purdue Airport, Ross Hills Park, and Ross Engineering Camp. They helped Purdue Theater, the Harlequin Club and more. Ade, renowned author and playwright, did butt heads with Purdue administrators at times long ago, but remains a revered figure. Ross's ingenious mechanical inventions of gears still steer millions of motorized vehicles, boats, tractors, even golf carts the world ...

Coal in our Veins: A Personal Journey by Erin Ann Thomas (Utah State University Press) 3.9 Stars (7 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

In Coal in Our Veins, Erin Thomas employs historical research, autobiography, and journalism to intertwine the history of coal, her ancestors' lives mining coal, and the societal and environmental impacts of the United States' dependency on coal as an energy source. In the first part of her book, she visits Wales, native ground of British coal mining and of her emigrant ancestors. The Thomases' move to the coal region of Utah -- where they witnessed the Winter Quarters and Castle Gate mine explosions, two of the worst mining disasters in American history -- and the history of coal development in Utah form the second part. Then Thomas investigates coal mining and communities in West Virginia, near her East Coast home, looking at the Sago Mine collapse and more widespread impacts of mining, including population displacement, mountain top removal, coal dust dispersal, and stream pollution, flooding, and decimation. The book's final part moves from Washington D.C. -- and an examination ...

Being SAGE: 55th Anniversary Edition by Publishing SAGE (SAGE Publications, Inc) 4.3 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 3 hours ago

Over drinks with her favorite professor and her future husband, a 25-year-old Sara Miller founded one of the most influential academic publishing houses on the planet. This career-spanning autobiography follows Sara Miller McCune and the company that emerged from that cocktail hour, SAGE Publishing. Read along as over 55 years SAGE grows from publishing a single journal promoted by direct mail (from a list provided by Daniel Patrick Moynihan) into a globe-spanning and proudly independent company with a core belief that engaged scholarship lies at the heart of any healthy society. While the book is an excellent source for those interested in publishing, education (especially the rise of social science in the post-war academy), and entrepreneurship, perhaps its most powerful impact is as an inspiring tale for young women anxious to start their own business and chart an independent course in life.

Keys to The Gift: A Guide to Vladimir Nabokov's Novel (Studies in Russian and Slavic Literatures, Cultures, and History) by Yuri Leving (Academic Studies Press) 5.0 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Yuri Leving's Keys to "The Gift": A Guide to Vladimir Nabokov's Novel is a new systematization of the main available data on Nabokov's most complex Russian novel, The Gift (1934-1939). From notes in Nabokov's private correspondence to scholarly articles accumulated during the seventy years since the novel's first appearance in print, the work draws from a broad spectrum of existing material in a succinct and coherent way, as well as providing innovative analyses. The first part of the monograph, "The Novel," outlines the basic properties of The Gift ( plot, characters, style, and motifs) and reconstructs its internal chronology. The second part, "The Text," describes the creation of the novel and the history of its publication, public and critical reaction, challenges of the English translation, and post-Soviet reception. Along with annotations to all five chapters of The Gift, the commentary provides insight into problems of paleography, featuring unique textological analysis of the ...

In Contempt: Defending Free Speech, Defeating HUAC by Ed Yellin (University of Michigan Press) 4.1 Stars (11 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

"YOU ARE HEREBY COMMANDED to be and appear before the Committee on Un-American Activities of the House of Representatives of the United States, or a duly appointed subcommittee thereof, on February 10 (Monday), 1958, at ten o'clock a.m. at City Council Chambers, City Hall, Gary, Indiana, then and there to testify touching matters of inquiry committed to said committee, and not to depart without leave of said committee." So began a decade of hardship for Ed and Jean Yellin and their three young children as the repressive weight of the U.S. government, caught up in the throes of McCarthyism, crashed down upon their careers, their daily household budget, and their relationships to colleagues, neighbors, and their country. In Contempt is a faithful, factual testament to the enduring quality of patriotic dissent in our evolving democracy -- and a loving reconstruction of what it meant to be labeled "unAmerican" for defending the Constitution.

The Codes of the Street in Risky Neighborhoods: A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Youth Violence in Germany, Pakistan, and South Africa by Wilhelm Heitmeyer (Springer) 3.6 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified 9 hours ago

This book presents a comparative look at the norms and attitudes related to youth violence. It aims to present a perspective outside of the typical Western context, through case studies comparing a developed / Western democracy (Germany), a country with a history of institutionalized violence (South Africa), and an emerging democracy that has experienced heavy terrorism (Pakistan). Building on earlier works, the research presented in this innovative volume provides new insights into the sociocultural context for shaping both young people's tolerance of and involvement in violence, depending on their environment. This volume covers: • Research on interpersonal violence. • Thorough review of the contribution of research on gangs, violence, neighborhoods and community. • Analyses on violence-related norms of male juveniles (ages 16-21 years old) living in high-risk urban neighborhoods. • Intense discussion of the concept of street code and its use. • Application of ...
