Simply Ichitantei, Zen Buddhism practices changed my life: Story of the unsui, Ashida Hōkan by Hōkan(峰寛) Ashida(芦田) 5.0 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 10 minutes ago

I decided, "The life of constantly wanting to do this or that is over. From now on, to return this debt of gratitude, I will live for something other than myself, for my father, for my mother, for my family and friends, for those connected to me by fate in this temple, for those I have had connections with in the past or that I will connect with in the future." Despite the pain, cold, sleepiness and sadness, even as I cried and my nose ran, I kept meditating, focusing on the breath of life, turning into the breath itself, becoming aware of my devoted, self-sacrificing body, the selfless love of all my cells, the sanctity of life. I was able to become aware. I was enthralled, turned around by Buddha's arrangement of this world, with gratitude towards my parents for giving me this precious life, to the parents of my parents and onwards. It was as if a glass were being filled with water, drop by drop. Love of the world, love of the universe, this unconditional love had permeated deep ...

MERCHANTS of DEATH by Ignacio J Esteban Price verified 12 hours ago

International firearms trafficking from the United States to Latin America, Canada and the Caribbean see American made firearms in huge demand in these countries. There are many reasons why including strict gun laws in these countries, violent criminal gangs use guns, drug traffickers looking to protect their territories with high-power weapons, and gun trafficking itself is lucrative. It is very easy in the United States to purchase firearms at gun dealers (FFL), private sales, gun shows, flea markets and online. Many criminal organizations have individuals in the United States purchase large amounts of firearms later to be smuggled by land, air or sea from the U.S. to their nation. American firearms and ammunition are well made plus the United States has many imported firearms from other countries. Armed drug trafficking and the surge in violence in these nations is leading to an arms race between gangs and cartels in our hemisphere. The brutal violence in these nations will only ...

Apologizing For Vietnam by Lisa Lieberman (Passport Press) 3.5 Stars (2 Reviews)    Price verified 14 hours ago

Shattered by the suicide of her cousin Allen, a Vietnam veteran, Lisa Lieberman embarked on a journey of understanding, reading memoirs and historical accounts of the Vietnam war in an effort to make sense of a war she'd only experienced second hand. Drafted in 1968, Allen served with the 4th Psychological Operations Group (PSYOP) at Tan Son Nhut airport, its Saigon headquarters. The unit came under heavy fire during PSYOP missions and Allen saw many of his comrades die. He shot himself in April 2002, six months after the US invasion of Afghanistan. Lieberman's reflections on Vietnam and on the moral injuries suffered by combatants like her cousin give all of us something to think about as the US teeters on the brink of another deadly war.

The Survivor's Song: Under the Hammer and Sickle - Budapest to Montreal by Andrew Fodor 4.0 Stars (10 Reviews)    Price verified 17 hours ago

The first book of this two-volume series (Unarmed Soldiers: Budapest to Stalingrad and back) follows the author's three-years on the road with the Hungarian forced labor battalions during WWII, taking him from Budapest to the area of Stalingrad. Armed with only his wits, a smattering of courage, some unexpected help and lots of luck, he survived the brutal conditions with his joie de vivre and sense of humor intact. He had simply not allowed the fascists to break his spirit in the time of war, and, as he demonstrates in this volume, he certainly wasn't going to let the incompetent post-war communists do so either. In this volume, continuing to use the skill and inventiveness that helped him survive the war, he dabbles in forgery, distilling illegal liquor, commercial art, music, journalism, accountancy and much literary ado before finally realizing that the Great People's Republic didn't really need his expertise in order to make stupid decisions about the freshly-minted communist ...

Download FREE with Kindle Unlimited Hoax, conspiracy, or secret society? That is the range of responses you might hear when raising the idea of the Priory of Sion. Ostensibly a clandestine order designed to disguise the truth about the children of Jesus Christ, the group have been labeled as either an elaborate concoction or the most powerful secret society in the world. Are they real? What are they hiding? Where did they come from? What impact can they have on the world around us? These are the questions this book will hope to answer. At the heart of the story of the Priory of Sion is the somewhat heretical notion that Jesus Christ -- the supposed son of God -- fathered children. Not only that but that his bloodline survives to this day. If true, the idea has a huge impact on the very existence of Christianity, the world's most popular religion. Summary: 2020 marked a new era in the United States with what some consider a revival of the Civil Rights Movement, sparked by the shocking and unjust murder of George Floyd. However, systemic racism against the Black community has survived even after the emancipation of slaves 1863. The Miscarriage of Racial Injustice spans presidential eras including Eisenhower, Bush, Obama, and Trump, discussing oppressive and often deadly racial discrimination. It examines each president's policies towards racism, including the 45th President's response to protests and his contribution to a deep divide in the United States. Author Derrick Newton's timeline is a profound and compelling look at inequality from the original Civil Rights Movement to the "Audacity of Hope" of Barrack Obama's election to the first half of 2020. This unforgiving chronicle will stick with you and inspire you to join and endure the fight for equality. Logline: An unforgiving and profound timeline of the history ...

The Three Wives of Adoniram Judson: Ann Hasseltine, Sarah Hall Boardman, Emily Chubbuck aka Fanny Forrester (Missionary Biographies) by Julie McDonald 4.4 Stars (17 Reviews)    Price verified 13 minutes ago

While researching and writing, Adoniram Judson, America's First Foreign Missionary, I became very frustrated. The book was already longer than my normal 15-20 page, 30 minute read. How could I possible honor his three wives, keep the narrative running smoothly and not confuse the reader with too many characters? I came up with, what I hope, is a great idea! I decided to do an entirely separate book, featuring each one of Adoniram's amazing wives, her early background, and individual story. I really enjoyed being able to give each woman the respect due her. Each one played a major role in reaching the people of Burma, as well as inspiring many young women to follow in her footsteps, to go to unreached people groups around the world.

James Buchanan: A Life from Beginning to End (Biographies of US Presidents) by Hourly History 4.2 Stars (255 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

Discover the remarkable life of James Buchanan... Free BONUS Inside! James Buchanan began life as a country boy in rural Pennsylvania. He would later leave the farm for law school and, after that, politics. Buchanan's ascent to the presidency was a careful and steady rise; he checked all of the requisite boxes and took all of the necessary steps he believed the office required, but nevertheless, when Buchanan was inaugurated president in March of 1857, he had inherited a powder keg that was just waiting to explode into the turmoil that was the American Civil War. James Buchanan has since been lambasted as being the great appeaser who placated the South enough to embolden them to secede from the Union. He is frequently listed as one of the worst presidents in the history of the United States. Buchanan himself, however, always held out the hope that history would vindicate him and the role he played. In this book, we explore James Buchanan's life -- before, during, and after the ...

Bomber!: Famous Bomber Missions of World War II by Robert Jackson 4.2 Stars (345 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

It was a moment in military history that required supreme courage. The bomber crews of World War II left the security of their bases night after night to fly into the heart of enemy territory. In telling detail Jackson describes the heavy American losses in the Schweinfurt-Regensburg campaign, when more than 300 Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses aimed to crush Germany's aircraft production but which cost more than 60 planes as it ventured beyond the protection of escorting fighters, and the RAF night raid on Nürnberg, when the Allies lost over 150 heavy bombers and nearly 1,300 aircrew. More poignantly, he tells the inspiring stories of the French crew who became the first Allied airmen to bomb Berlin and the six RAF Lancasters who ...

Jerusalem's Traitor: Josephus, Masada, and the Fall of Judea by Desmond Seward 4.4 Stars (57 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

An ancient historian who watched the destruction of Jerusalem... When the Jews revolted against Rome in 66 CE, Josephus, a Jerusalem aristocrat, was made a general in his nation's army. Captured by the Romans, he saved his skin by finding favour with the emperor Vespasian. He then served as an adviser to the Roman legions, running a network of spies inside Jerusalem, in the belief that the Jews' only hope of survival lay in surrender to Rome. As a Jewish eyewitness who was given access to Vespasian's campaign notebooks, Josephus is our only source of information for the war of extermination that ended in the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, and the amazing times in which he lived. He is of vital importance for anyone interested in the Middle East, Jewish history, and the early history of Christianity. London is in the middle of a drugs war, with the rise of crack cocaine, and the notorious Yardies are defending the trade with complete disregard for the law, or for human life. Rivals are eliminated without mercy, and whole districts fall under the control of the crime lords. Mike and his colleagues fight back, and, with the support of local communities, start to bring law and order back to the streets. But then PC Patrick Dunne, one of Mike's colleagues, is murdered. A Book of Remarkable Criminals by H. B. Irving 3.8 Stars (624 Reviews)    Price verified 15 hours ago

This classic study profiles serial killers, gentleman murderers, and every stripe of madman in between Benjamin Pitezel should never have trusted H. H. Holmes. In 1894, the two men conspired to fake Pitezel's death for the sake of a $10,000 insurance settlement. But Holmes decided murder would be simpler. He killed his partner, kidnapped three of his children, and tried to claim the insurance money as his own. The scheme unraveled and Holmes killed the children as well. When he was caught, the police had no idea they had captured one of the vilest murderers in American history. The Pitezel murders were only the tip of a very bloody iceberg. The chilling case of H. H. Holmes -- famously recounted in Erik Larson's award-winning bestseller, The Devil in the White City -- is but one of the true crime tales contained in this remarkable work. Author H. B. Irving understood the public's lurid fascination with murder, and in this seminal study he shows readers the many faces of evil.

Grandfather Lost by Vella Munn 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 13 minutes ago

Violent death mystery lasts for one hundred years In 1924, Homer Eon Flint, a thirty six year old multi-published writer and married father of three young children was found dead at the bottom of a canyon. According to a witness and the police, he was pinned under a taxi with a loaded pistol nearby. The media sensationalized his violent end. Some sources suggested he'd participated in an earlier bank robbery. Several friends even considered that he'd committed suicide because of his interest in the occult. The taxi driver--who died in prison--told police that Flint had hijacked the taxi at gunpoint and had driven away, only to die in an accident later that night. Then there's the belief held by Homer's family. He was a victim -- in the wrong place at the wrong time. Homer Eon Flint is considered one of the early twentieth century American pioneers in science fiction. His work such as The Devolutionist and The Emancipatrix have remained as pillars of the speculative fiction genre. ...

There were a lot of talents in Hollywood in the 1950s, some of whom -despite being talented- faded into obscurity after a brief fling at stardom. I thought that it'd be great to pay tribute to seven whom appeared in films like Guys and Dolls (1955) while modeling for some prominent brands. June Kirby (1928-2022), Larri Thomas (1932-2013), and Pat Sheehan (1931-2006) are the blondes, and Suzanne Ames (1933-2013), Suzanne Alexander (1931-1975), Madelyn Darrow (1935-2015), and Jann Darlyn are the brunettes. They could act, sing, dance, and some became successful in the field of business. I conducted various interviews and compiled photographs to create a great publication dedicated to their careers.

Coping With Breast Cancer. by Ricky Sides 4.1 Stars (106 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

In the mid-nineties, my wife was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, which had metastasized to her lymph nodes. The essay "Coping with Breast Cancer" details what happened in the wake of that diagnosis. We decided to release this composition in the hopes of helping other couples confronted with this terrible disease. Here is a brief excerpt from Coping with Breast Cancer. In the fall of 1994 we were living the good life. We'd just bought our dream house and moved in the previous July and were looking forward to our first holiday season in our new home. Only one thing placed a cloud over our lives at that point in time. My wife had a mysterious bloody discharge from one breast. She had also lost a considerable amount of weight and I was beginning to become concerned. My wife was reluctant to agree to go to a doctor but finally I managed to elicit a promise from her that she would go to see a physician the day after Thanksgiving. That morning we got into our car for the drive ...

"Pandit Ko bhi Salam hai aur maulvi ko bhi, mazhab na chahiye mujhe imaan chahiye." - Akbar Allahabadi "Rafi Ahmed Kidwai: Bridging Region and Nation" is a political biography of a congressman from Uttar Pradesh to whom nothing mattered but Indian freedom. During pre-partitioned days when greatest of the Muslims queued to Muhammad Ali Jinnah in his Pakistan movement, he stood his guns with resolute firmness. He was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's closest colleague, India's first communication Minister and was one of the two Muslims in the Nehru cabinet along with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He achieved miracles as Food and Agriculture Minister by his policy of food de-control. He was an administrative genius to the caliber of Sardar Patel, a nationalist Indian, and a humanist in truest term. Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century (Updated, Annotated): Eleven Biographies in One Volume by J. C. Ryle 4.7 Stars (149 Reviews)    Price verified 5 hours ago

Biographies of George Whitefield, John Wesley, William Grimshaw, William Romaine, Daniel Rowlands, John Berridge, Henry Venn, Samuel Walker, James Hervey, Augustus Toplady, and John Fletcher. The reader will soon discover that I am an enthusiastic admirer of the men whose lives and ministries I have narrated in this volume. I confess it honestly. I am a thorough admirer of them. I firmly believe that, with the exceptions of Martin Luther and his contemporaries and our own martyred Reformers, the world has not seen any such men since the days of the apostles. I believe there have not been any who have preached as much clear scriptural truth, none who have lived such lives, none who have shown such courage in Christ's service, none who have suffered as much for the truth, and none who have done as much good. If anyone can name better men, he knows more than I do. My purpose in compiling these biographies was to present to the public the lives, characters, and work of the leading ...

The Wow Climax: Tracing the Emotional Impact of Popular Culture by Henry Jenkins 5.0 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

A spirited collection of essays that get to the heart of what gives popular culture its emotional impact Vaudevillians used the term "the wow climax" to refer to the emotional highpoint of their acts -- a final moment of peak spectacle following a gradual building of audience's emotions. Viewed by most critics as vulgar and sensationalistic, the vaudeville aesthetic was celebrated by other writers for its vitality, its liveliness, and its playfulness. The Wow Climax follows in the path of this more laudatory tradition, drawing out the range of emotions in popular culture and mapping what we might call an aesthetic of immediacy. It pulls together a spirited range of work from Henry Jenkins, one of our most astute media scholars, that spans different media (film, television, literature, comics, games), genres (slapstick, melodrama, horror, exploitation cinema), and emotional reactions (shock, laughter, sentimentality). Whether highlighting the sentimentality at the heart of the Lassie ...

The Essential Agus: The Writings of Jacob B. Agus by Steven T. Katz (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 17 hours ago

Rabbi Jacob Agus' (1911-1986) intellectual production spanned nearly a half century and covered an enormous historical and conceptual range, from the biblical to the modern era. Best known as an important Jewish scholar, he also held important rabbinic, teaching, and public positions. Although born and raised within an orthodox setting, Agus was strongly influenced by American liberalism and his work displayed modernizing sympathies, reservations about nationalism--including some forms of Zionism--and often severe criticisms of kabbalah. Agus crafted a unique, quite American, modernizing vision that ardently sought to remain in touch with the wellsprings of the rabbinic tradition while remaining open to the intellectual and moral currents of his own time. The Essential Agus brings together a sampling of Agus' most important published and unpublished material in one easily accessible volume. It will be an invaluable resource for students and researchers seeking to experience Agus' ...

Reflections: The Life and Writings of a Young Blind Woman in Post-Revolutionary France (The History of Disability Book 5) by Therese-Adèle Husson (NYU Press) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 13 minutes ago

In the 1820s, several years before Braille was invented, Therese-Adele Husson, a young blind woman from provincial France, wrote an audacious manifesto about her life, French society, and her hopes for the future. Through extensive research and scholarly detective work, authors Catherine Kudlick and Zina Weygand have rescued this intriguing woman and the remarkable story of her life and tragic death from obscurity, giving readers a rare look into a world recorded by an unlikely historical figure. Reflections is one of the earliest recorded manifestations of group solidarity among people with the same disability, advocating self-sufficiency and independence on the part of blind people, encouraging education for all blind children, and exploring gender roles for both men and women. Resolutely defying the sense of "otherness" which pervades discourse about the disabled, Husson instead convinces us that that blindness offers a fresh and important perspective on both history and ...

God's Good Works: Stories to Treasure and Tales to Ponder is a heartfelt faith-based collection of anecdotes and insightful lessons drawn from everyday experiences. It also examines the current American and global political climates through the lens of biblical eschatology. Beginning in 2020, the battle between the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Darkness exploded with Black Lives Matter, COVID-19, and the January 6, 2021 "Capitol insurrection." Could we be living in the final days before the coming New World Order and the rapture of the Bible-believing Church?

Expression. My Cancer: a Gut Feeling. by Kerry O'Brien 3.8 Stars (23 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

However, Kerry's light-hearted sense of humour and unending positivity and love of life shines through in her writing. In this very personal book, Kerry overcomes the stigma of talking openly about the symptoms and treatments for bowel cancer: there are graphic descriptions of some of the intimate details of bodily (mal)functions; reflections on her research into what may have contributed to her diagnosis and nutritional and other lifestyle changes she has found helpful. Kerry shares how she has made sense of her situation and developed coping strategies, in the hope of helping others. Borden of Yale: The Life and Legacy of William Borden - No Reserve, No Retreat, No Regrets by Mrs. Howard Taylor 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 45 minutes ago

The Inspiring Life and Legacy of William Borden, a Man of Unwavering Faith and Profound Impact William Borden was extraordinary in almost every sense. Born into wealth and privilege, he could have chosen to live a life of luxury and ease. Instead, he surrendered it all for a life of service to Christ. "Borden of Yale" is the riveting account of a man who exemplified what it means to be fully committed to God. Raised in Moody Church in Chicago and educated at both Yale and Princeton, Borden first felt the missionary call during a round-the-world journey gifted to him by his parents at the age of sixteen. The following year, he received a distinct call to dedicate his life to serving the Muslims of China, a decision that shaped everything he did from that point forward. Though a scholar in his own right, Borden's theological insights were not merely intellectual pursuits; they were living beliefs that propelled him into action. From leading Bible studies in dorms and founding the ...

What is it about cops that we find so intriguing? Most people have strong views of the police, but how many of these views are based on evidence, and which are biased or stereotypes? It starts with a seemingly routine day in the life of young British soldier Diem Burden. The Bible by King James version (E-BOOKARAMA) 4.1 Stars (22 Reviews)    Price verified 11 hours ago

When James I became King of England in 1603, having a Bible version dedicated to him was the farthest thing from his mind. But being a good administrator, when the Puritans presented him with a list of grievances they had against the Church of England, James decided to convene a conference to try to work out the differences. No real decisions of lasting worth were made at that conference except one: To create a new version of the English Bible. In 1611 the first copies of the new "Authorized Version" were released. Like every new Bible version before, it had to deal with people hesitant to give up their older versions. But it quickly overcame these trials, and within 25 years it had replaced the Geneva Translation as the version most used in Churches and for private study. And because of its excellence, the King James Version would become the only English Bible for almost three centuries.

Reflections on Enchantress from the Stars and Other Essays by Sylvia Engdahl 3.4 Stars (3 Reviews)    Price verified 10 hours ago

In the title essay of this ebook science fiction author Sylvia Engdahl discusses her Newbery Honor book Enchantress from the Stars--which she intended for teens rather than children--pointing out reactions to it that she finds disturbing. The story is literally about relations between species that have evolved in different time frames on separate planets, she says, and to interpret it as an allegory about intercultural relations on Earth implies that some cultures of our world are more "primitive" than others, a view long ago rejected by anthropolgists. Though there is much in the book that does indeed apply to people of our own world, the elder species' attitude toward younger ones does not, since we of Earth are all members of the same species. It is relevant not to how we view each other, but to how we view our relation to the rest of the universe--for example, whether we should expect extraterrestrial civiliations to send the radio messages across space that many scientists now ...
