A pictograph is a writing by picture. It conveys and records an idea or occurrence by graphic means without the use of words or letters. The execution of the pictures of which it is composed often exhibits the first crude efforts of graphic art, and their study in that relation is of value. When pictures are employed as writing the conception intended to be presented is generally analyzed, and only its most essential points are indicated, with the result that the characters when frequently repeated become conventional, and in their later forms cease to be recognizable as objective portraitures. A general deduction made after several years of study of pictographs of all kinds found among the North American Indians is that they exhibit very little trace of mysticism or of esotericism in any form. They are objective representations and cannot be treated as ciphers or cryptographs ...

A bird of passage never rests... Bird of Passage -- a person who passes through or visits a place without staying for long -- is an epic life journey that takes Ms. Hobbs around the globe. Bird of Passage recounts her life from a privileged child of a diplomat, to having it upended by her mother's decision to divorce their father and marry a Frenchman whom she met in Saigon. She touches on her views of the Vietnam War from the prospective of a person who lived in Saigon before the war; the Civil Rights struggle she became immersed in when she returned to the United States in 1958; and later recounts her personal struggles raising a son with mental illness. She describes her life's journey which includes the internal and external factors that helped her become the strong, successful woman she grew to be, with wisdom, humor and remarkable insight.

The Peloponnesian War took place in the 5th Century BC. This war was fought between Athens and Sparta - at the time the two most powerful city-states in ancient Greece. The Peloponnesian War reshaped the ancient Greek world, made a significant power shift in ancient Greece, favoring Sparta. It caused the total regional decline and marked the dramatic end to the fifth century BC and the golden age of Greece. Ancient Greek warfare, originally a limited and formalized form of conflict, was transformed into an all-out struggle between city-states, complete with atrocities on a large scale. Shattering religious and cultural taboos, devastating vast swathes of countryside, and destroying whole cities, the Peloponnesian War marked the dramatic end to the fifth century BC and the golden age of Greece.
This book provides a thorough insight into this period of the history of ancient Greece and this devastating conflict through the work of the prominent modern historian J. B. Bury, as well as ...

Fake news. Alternative facts. Ideological agendas. How do you tell the difference between true and false? How do you know what it all means? In Actually, It's Not Easy, novices and experts alike can grow their ability to understand complex topics in today's world. A consistent, analytical approach results in an understandable context useful for solving problems. Timely subjects like health reform and tax policy blend with voyages into probability theory and the history of totalitarian coups. These topics, perhaps arcane at the start, achieve clarity and consequence on their way to an often-surprising thesis. Only by accepting - perhaps even enjoying - the complexity of these topics, can we hope to achieve sturdy solutions to the problems faced by our society.
When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, I had already signed off from the Army and knew that a war fought in the Middle East wouldn't involve me. Apart from anything else, this would have been an unusual theatre for the British Army to fight in, but, of course, the Warsaw Pact, our traditional enemy for many years, had just collapsed and the troops in Germany were free for deployment to another part of the world.
With heavy heart, I set foot in Saudi Arabia at the end of 1990 and undertook a strange odyssey across the deserts of the region, passing through Iraq and then into Kuwait. My adventures were formed by a bizarre cast of characters including Captain Ollocks, Sergeant-major Unt, Sergeant Anker and Corporal Ickhead.
When the war ended abruptly I was bewildered. Was that it?
It was only with the passing of years that I really understood the nature of the battle I had been involved in...
Who are we? And, why are we?
Seems like a question that has been asked a million times by million people? But, do we have answers that make us objectively rationalize every situation we face, every information we come across and every thought that arises in our mind?
When I was writing this book I was aware of one simple thing. This book is not meant to be only read. This book is meant to be understood.
For thousands for years these texts have influenced millions, few understood it completely, few practiced it literally, few tried to depict the text, and few challenged it, yet there are few who truly looked at these texts as self-help and self-reform manual.
This book, according to me is for each one who has questions and would like to get some rationale and objective answers and find own conclusions based on each ones unique situation and background.
My journey till now and the fundamental thoughts that have troubled me, lead me to start studying the one book I was told has all ...

This open access book looks at the dramatic history of ovariotomy, an operation to remove ovarian tumours first practiced in the early nineteenth century. Bold and daring, surgeons who performed it claimed to be initiating a new era of surgery by opening the abdomen. Ovariotomy soon occupied a complex position within medicine and society, as an operation which symbolised surgical progress, while also remaining at the boundaries of ethical acceptability. This book traces the operation's innovation, from its roots in eighteenth-century pathology, through the denouncement of those who performed it as 'belly-rippers', to its rapid uptake in the 1880s, when ovariotomists were accused of over-operating. Throughout the century, the operation was never a hair's breadth from controversy.

Forest management has evolved from a mercantilist view to a multi-functional one that integrates economic, social, and ecological aspects. However, the issue of sustainability is not yet resolved. Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management brings together global research in three areas of application: inventory of the forest variables that determine the main environmental indices, description and design of new environmental indices, and the application of sustainability indices for regional implementations. All these quantitative techniques create the basis for the development of scientific methodologies of participatory sustainable forest management.

Typical development in the American Southwest often resulted in scraping the desert lands of the ancient living landscape, to be replaced with one that is human-made and dependent on a large consumption of energy and natural resources. This transdisciplinary book explores the natural and built environment of this desert region and introduces development tools for shaping its future in a more sustainable way. It offers valuable insights to help promote ecological balance between nature and the built environment in the American Southwest-and in other ecologically fragile regions around the world.

This book explores the ways in which statistical models, methods, and research designs can be used to open new possibilities for APC analysis. Within a single, consistent HAPC-GLMM statistical modeling framework, the authors synthesize APC models and methods for three research designs: age-by-time period tables of population rates or proportions, repeated cross-section sample surveys, and accelerated longitudinal panel studies. They show how the empirical application of the models to various problems leads to many fascinating findings on how outcome variables develop along the age, period, and cohort dimensions.

This volume casts light on mergers and alliances in higher education by examining developments of this type in different countries. It combines the direct experiences of those at the heart of such transformations, university leaders and senior officials responsible for higher education policy, with expert analysts of the systems concerned.
Higher education in Europe faces a series of major challenges. The economic crisis has accelerated expectations of an increased role in addressing economic and societal challenges while at the same time putting pressure on available finances. Broader trends such as shifting student demographics and expectations, globalisation and mobility and new ways of working with business have contributed to these increased pressures. In the light of these trends there have been moves, both from national or regional agencies and from individual institutions to respond by combining resources, either through collaborative arrangements or more fundamentally ...
The papers in this volume derive from the proceedings of the nineteenth International Bronze Congress, held at the Getty Center and Villa in October 2015 in connection with the exhibition Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World. The study of large-scale ancient bronzes has long focused on aspects of technology and production. Analytical work of materials, processes, and techniques has significantly enriched our understanding of the medium. Most recently, the restoration history of bronzes has established itself as a distinct area of investigation. How does this scholarship bear on the understanding of bronzes within the wider history of ancient art? How do these technical data relate to our ideas of styles and development? How has the material itself affected ancient and modern perceptions of form, value, and status of works of art?

Stem cell research is one of the fascinating areas of contemporary biology, but, as with many expanding fields of scientific inquiry, research on stem cells raises scientific questions as rapidly as it generates discoveries. Research on stem cell treatment continues to advance knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms. The most important potential application of human stem cells is the generation of cells and tissues that could be used for cell-based therapies, especially oncology.
The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, collaborated with the center of excellence and innovation (Pusat Unggulan Inovasi /PUI). The Stem Cell center of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized an International Conference. The International Stem Cell and Oncology Conference (ISCOC) 2017 was a comprehensive academic conference in the field of stem cell and oncology research and also tropical medicine and ...

All of life is not lived on mountaintops. We will experience some deep valleys of pain, disappointment, uncertainty, sickness, grief, and even the valley of the shadow of death. Sometimes multitudes enter long and deep valleys together, as in prolonged seasons of war, or the COVID-19 pandemic that brought many to hardship, uncertainty, and fear. Yet, it often feels like we are walking through a deep valley alone. It doesn't have to be that way - Scripture makes it clear that if we have even a little faith, the Lord walks with us and guides us. If we keep our eyes on Him, our deepest valleys will strengthen and enrich our walk with God.
Stephen Gammon faithfully served God for 40 years as a pastor and military chaplain. Then, in October 2018, he was diagnosed with cancer (Multiple Myeloma); he and his wife Helen entered this deep valley, walking with God by faith. With personal vulnerability and spiritual insight, he posted regular medical updates on the CaringBridge website, sharing ...

Horrified by the Holocaust, social psychologist Stanley Milgram wondered if he could recreate the Holocaust in the laboratory setting. Unabated for more than half a century, his (in)famous results have continued to intrigue scholars. Based on unpublished archival data from Milgram's personal collection, volume one of this two-volume set introduces readers to a behind the scenes account showing how during Milgram's unpublished pilot studies he step-by-step invented his official experimental procedure -- how he gradually learnt to transform most ordinary people into willing inflictors of harm. The open access volume two then illustrates how certain innovators within the Nazi regime used the very same Milgram-like learning techniques that with increasing effectiveness gradually enabled them to also transform most ordinary people into increasingly capable executioners of other men, women, and children. Volume two effectively attempts to capture how step-by-step these Nazi innovators ...
